@Fattyshack If my comment "sucks" then don't read it, as simple as that. I didn't say her dancing is bad, quite the contrary, but her characterization is not adequate for this role. I understand that each company has its ways but for me the variations of the three Shades should never be treated as mere displays of technique.
As much as I love Yuhui Choe, I don't like the way she danced this variation. Her musicality and precision are excellent, and her technique flawless, but she lacked characterization. As a Shade, her movements should be faster and sharper, or she looks like a fairy from Sleeping Beauty. On top of that, she's smiling.
@theamazingsoter Hahaha! We might have to fight about this. Seriously I take your point very well. I love Yuhui Choe too, but she shares with Asian dancers, the same charge levelled against many of them - technically secure, pleasing to watch, but somewhat limited in emotional expression through the face and body. I’m Asian too, and perhaps a little hard on my own race when it comes to their contribution to the European classical performing arts, but I can understand that common opinion.
Wow! That was impressive. I love the way her leg unfolded in developpe devant after her double pirouette. It’s an accent I’ve never seen before, and a welcome one since it implies she’s solidly on her leg. Her dancing actually reminds me of a young Makarova, light, expansive and expressive.
@RomanticaKH a veil, they are the Kingdom of Shades. the veils help represent the smoke in Solar's opium induced euphoric dream where he reconciles with his lost love Nikiya <3
@tutus4life I don't know who your talking about, but I now know that represents smoke in some person's dream where he gets back together with his girl...
@RomanticaKH the guy who is dreaming, Solor, was in love with a temple dancer called Nikiya, but he ends up having to marry a Rajah's daughter, called gamzatti, and Nikiya has to dance at their wedding celebrations. When she sees who is getting married, she becomes very upset, and then gamzatti kills her by giving her a basket of flowers with a snake hidden inside, which bites her and kills her. In some versions she comes back to life but in the original she doesnt, and this is the final act. :)
top comment sucks because I don't think this variation has ever been danced better anywhere and by anyone.

This is pretty darn good, normally this variation is butchered.
