The interesting thing is that it does not matter if the magazine is 20 or 30, the rate of fire of the M249 is so monstrous that it consumes that pithy magazine in a few bursts. 1000 rounds a minute means you cannot actually hear the individual rounds being fired. IF it was a 30 round STANAG, it only means that the total fire per magazine is just a minute fraction over 2 seconds. The use of box metal magazines is for emergencies only, only if all 200 round belts or other belts are expended.

The reason they use such small mags is because:

1. when training with 30 round mags, the spring compression is uneven and prone to jamming from the high rate of fire, so use smaller mags.

2. Smaller mags teaches ammo conservation because ammo is heavy when you carry that much and you don't want to shoot it all.

when i was in baghdad, they told me the reason was because if you laid heavy support and ran out of ammo, a buddy could toss you a mag and from 18 round bursts, you have to go from 2-4 round bursts
