Kenshin caught Leprocy. Then because Kaoru refused to stop being intimate with Kenshin, she developed it as well. It is a contagious disease. Kenshin was 43 in the ova, Kaoru was only 33.

well actually the disease was similar to leprosy, leprosy makes your skin look like scales, this i would assume has the same effects except the scale thing

@narutoandWoWgeek The OVA is set 13 years after the anime ended meaning that Kaoru is now 30 and Kenshin is 41... Kenji is 13 years old. The writers of the OVA never said what the name of the disease was but was similarily close to Leprosy.
