  • another diesel....love it !!!

  • pretty awesome small engines are very interesting , and basic ...

  • Am I the only one that pictures this motor in a really cool RC drag boat...?

  • thanks for showing us that cool engine !

  • wow you can see the valves

  • BallzZ!! That is 1 awesome 4 stroke! Love it.

Thank you Dave, it was great fun to watch.

  • that is cool as hell

  • Precioso...

    Wanderfull...

Me encantan los motores de cuatro tiempos

    I love the four-stroke. engines

  • Thanks Dave for sharing soo much with us other guys in the hobby.

    Dwight dpierce9256@att.net

  • How much time do you think you have on this engine? Nothing says "harmony" like Mozart, Van Halen and this Kalt .45 at idle.

  • bubblemachine :D

  • real cool

  • sounds like a real piston engine plane

  • @MYcareLEVELis1 it is a real piston engine, just smaller

  • @coolbluelights i ment like full scale plane engine

  • The Kalt 7,5cc was introduced in the low 80th.

One pilot from my former RC Club came one day with

a 1,9 meter Wightspan Me109 (only low scale) from Schlüter

with a Kalt on it. Normally a 1HP Motor was recommendet but

the 0,5 Hp Kalt was enough for a sufficient climb-rate and

    take off power.

The Schlüter Me109 had about 3,5 Kilo (7 lbs) weight and was

nearly a sail-plane (build for non proportional RC systems).

But it has flown quiet well with the Kalt 7,5cc 4 stroke.

  • Hey, Dave how does lubrication work in this type of engine? Could you explain briefly??

  • don't forget to lubricate those rockers.

What a shame its gathering dust in you garage! It should be at work on the front of my Piper Cub. I would give it a good home here in Scotland Dave ..

  • do u have to lube the rocker arms ur self???

  • That sounds so much lovlier than more modern 4 strokes...

  • you ar the best

  • Hey! I have a huge question. I disassembled my scooter the other day and I just want the motor. Its a 4 stroke motor. I have NO idea about motors. The question is: how do i get it to start? Do I need the battery to get it working? Or can I just use the kick and it will start after some time? I’ll send a link of my engine on mail if some one wants to see what I’m talking about. Engine name: 50CC 4 STROKE GY6 SCOOTER ENGINE 139QMB MOTOR AUTO CARB

  • Since it doesn't have a muffler you don't get any pressure line to pressurize the fuel tank, does that needs to be in level with the carb?

  • nice engine. sounds sweet too

  • That bad boy should cool you pretty good in the summer.

  • Hi i got a question...I have the o.s. fs120III 4 stroke for my mustang that im breaking in. I set the high and low needles as per instructions but when i try to accelerate the engine looses power and shuts off, i have to back off the throttle just to keep the engine running. i tried leaning the low end but doesnt help.Any ideas? Also the instructions say i dont need a line from tank to muffler.

  • like said below, it seems that the high needle isnt set rich enough for the fuel/altitude mixture. i have an os fs61 exposed rocker arms, it seems to run best on fuels with synthetic lube. i have been using cool power in the 15% mix.

good luck, my engine is over 26 yrs and still runs great

  • @7bikerboy7 id you get a reply?

  • On full size aircraft, dry sump engines usually have separate oil tanks(like most radials)in order to minimize the frontal area to reduce drag.

  • is there oil in the crank case?

  • Since there is no exhaust does that in return make the engine run cleaner. Does it provide a constant flow. Does it mean that there is fuel being wasted.

  • Great video Dave!

    Nice engine. Great sound!

I have a 2.5cc Taipan, I don't know if they ever get out of Australia, but they were made here in Adelaide, in the 60's - 70's.

The dies and molds all went off shore when the company folded, I'm not sure were they went or what happened.

  • The Taipan was a top of the line engine. Very high power. Yes, they were available here in the USA

  • I wonder if this company eventually became saito engines or if they already existed. The valves are on the same angles as on todays saito engines.

  • check out my antique motor in the video response

It has an insane stock exhuast and sounds so cool!!

  • I dont understand, this is a 4 stroke, but it runs on pre mixed two stroke nitro fuel with no oil in a sump???

how can it be a for stroke if it has no oil to 4 stoke with, otherwise the 2 out of 4 cycles are for nothing!

  • it must pull the intake charge through the sump as in a two-stroke, but has four strokes instead..

  • I has an intake and exhaust valve on the top of the head. If you look close you can see the intake manifold going from the carb to the head. Only a four stroke has overhead valves.

  • 4 stroke mean it fires evey for strokes that the piston goes up and down, 4 stroke has nothing to do with what fuel it runs on it.

  • do you know how a four stroke works?

  • Its no running on two stroke premix. It runs just like a diesle engine. Thats why it has a glow plug. If it had electrical timing and a spark plug it could run off gassoline.

  • Sounds good indeed :)

  • Cool little engine...sounds good too hahhh sort of brings back memories of my model airplanes that had the spring loaded starters... when he mentioned the sharp prop...Those whacks to the finger really did hurt

  • Most 4 stroke glow engines are engineered with a certain amount of blowby (typically there is just one piston ring) to allow oil to migrate into the crankcase where it happily flops around although it gets cycled out the breather by and by, but there's always more on the way. As well, some unburnt oil blows up the valve guides and down the pushrod tubes although the early Kalt relied on castor's propensity for getting absolutely bloody everywhere.

    Got any English Lasers Dave?

  • so what lubricates the crank and bearings? in a 2 stroke the nitro fuel has oil in it and lubes everything as it passes through the crankcase. but on a 4 stroke the fuel doesnt go through the crankcase, so is there regular oil or something in there?

  • Well, if a short explanation is super anal, mea culpa.

Saying that glow engines are a kind of diesel is like claiming that you're a kind of dolphin.

Glow plugs have nothing to do with diesel operation whatsoever. Plenty of diesels don't have them.

Model glow engines do not have compression ratios sufficient for diesel operation. At a stretch, you might describe them as a form of surface ignition engine? There's lots of info on the net to allow you to achieve full pedantic glory, as I have LOL.

  • Glow ignition model airplane engines are not diesels. Although a current is applied to the plug to cause it to glow for starting, it is a catalytic reaction whereby platinum will glow in the presence of methyl alcohol vapour at certain temperatures and pressures, if I recall correctly. They are catalytic ignition engines, I believe. There was quite a bit of research being done on this by auto mfgrs. as the combustion process is very complete. There are diesel model engines (of a sort).

  • Kalt made a little .30 sized helicopter called the Baron back then that was a real sweetie. Made the Shuttle look like a piece of plastic crap. Mind you, you always had to pay a premium for Kalt stuff.

  • so, basically its a diesel, since it runs off of heat and compression.

  • Comment removed

  • According to you then, all engines (even steam), are diesels.

  • well since your being super anal about it, its KIND of a diesel, since it uses glow plugs, it runs off of the heat generated by compression.

  • sounds like half a harley motor

  • WOW A FOUR STROKE AT THAT SIZE WOW!!!!

  • sounds like a sweet cat roum roum ;)

  • Dave, i have the same rotor starter, but the label is gone and i couldnt figure out what voltage it ran on, so now i know. But, where do i find a battery such as the one you have there?

  • lovely awesome amazing.....I WANT ONE....actually i want your hole shed dave you have so much TO DO stuff in your shed you should make an inventory so i can buy everything you have...With my million dollars...LOL...love ya work dave

  • Can you tell me how to put out the engine without damaging it?? And what prop did you use?? I need this information because I'm having an O.S. FS-60 and I'm trying to get im running. Nice engine!!!

  • Comment removed

  • were is the plain

  • well its just the engine? would you run an antique engine on a plane? no you keep it lol

  • awesome just a sweet engine you have there. One question is it like a flat head or is its cupped?I do not know much about any engine like that, interested to learn though.

  • man that thing sounds nice!

  • Thats pretty sweet! :)

  • Thanks kindly.

  • very nice engine, nice you still have it and enjoy it even though she is retired! i really cant get over how quiet it is, i am so used to noisy 2 strokes!

I didnt know Kalt made engines, all i know them from is RC helicopters way back, the Kalt cyclone comes to mind.

Just one thought tho, what are your thoughts about running the engine in a vice, i have heard nasty stories of them vibrating loose?

  • how much did you pay back then?

  • I think it was $399.

  • wow that makes my trx 3.3 sound like a chainsaw WITH A MUFFLER

  • Haha.

  • awesome. sounds so nice

  • Thanks.

  • Put a muffler on it and in would be silent.

    Very cool.

  • Haha. Yep. Thanks.

  • How much would this engine be worth?

  • I was offered $600 for it, but don't know for sure.

  • Does it use 2 stroke fuel for lubrication? I dont see any smoke. Or does it have crankcase oil?

  • It uses 2 stroke model airplane fuel 5% Nitro and the rest is alcohol and synthetic oil, therefore low on smoke)

No crank oil. I just put a drop of 3 in 1 on the rockers and cam occasionally.

  • Japans...

  • Yep, better quality than Chinese..

  • That's neat!

  • Thank you.

  • you should have cut a finger off, then you could put that money to good use...

  • What is your problem?

  • just wondering cause it is a 4 stroke and has a glow plug can it run diesel?? or do u eed a higher compression motor for that ?

  • Yep, 4 stroke just like the car, but glowplugs work well for this application. Diesel would require quite a bit more comperssion for sure.

  • what is the cylinder made out of?

  • Chrome plated steel and brass mixture.

  • You should make a video of you flying one of your nitro planes.

  • I have. See my Pitts video in cornfield or my P-80 video, plus others.

  • LOL. Not that easy though, those springs are pretty strong.

  • easy to turn off just push on the valve to stop it

  • im lik'n' your language

  • i want one

  • None to be had anymore. Try the Saito 4 strokes as they are even cooler today.

  • 4:55 is it leeking oil on vice?

  • That is unburned Caster oil coming out of the exhaust. Even though it is a 4 stroke, it uses a glow plug, and oil in the fuel to lubricate it. It is a dry sump.

  • cool. I have smallest 4 stroke production engine (I believe) an OS FS 20 made around 1986.

    Cute little bugger !

  • Thanks. OS makes nice 4 strokes in all sizes, for sure. .20 is pretty small. Bet it runs sweet.

  • Wow, that is sooooo sweet! Beautiful little engine. Do you have any information on what the engine cost in the early eighties? Thanks for the posting.

  • Thanks kindly for your comments. I appreciate them.

    Dave (AKA Nightflyyer)

I blocked myself from replying to my own videos AS MYSELF, till You Tube Figures out what went wrong and how to fix it,

so I am answering as NightflyyersShadow.

I paid $400 for this engine brand new.

  • oh and also, about what is the max rpm on this engine? beautiful engine by the way

  • Thanks kindly for your comments. I appreciate them. 12,000 RPM.

  • would it run better at all if you were to let the glow plug stay heated the whole time? or does it not make a difference?

  • It runs better at idle, but no difference at speed. It has a high lift cam, so idles rough, especially for a single cylinder.

  • Why did the exhaust sound so uneven? I haven't seen a 4-cycle before. The old Cox 2-stroke sounded much noisier but the exhaust was very even. Thanks for sharing.

  • Strong 4 strokes, with cams, idle rough just like Race cars. Harleys idle very rough too.

    Thanks.

  • why doint you have any cox engines you should make a project rc plane with the engine since its cheap and fun

  • Haha. I started out with Cox Engines over 45 years ago. I guess I grew out of them and I always remembered the neighbors hated the noise. I do fly Cox stuff still, as you can see from my Junkyard dog video, cox wing, and my Christen Eagle, is also Cox that I fly at night.

  • i wonder wat is sounds like without exhaust!

  • Well it sounds about the same, as the exhaust is just a straight pipe, not a muffler.

  • Sweet little engine.

  • Thanks.

  • id move the picooz if i were you :)

  • LOL.

  • Is it a wet sump engine?

  • No. Caster Oil in the fuel, going in through the carb and crank, lubricates it just like the 2 strokes.

  • wow cool motor how did u get it im surprised it didnt go BOOM...

  • I bought it from a friend in Japan.

  • how much was it?

  • $499, If I remember right.

  • oh. that helps make it easier to make a gas rc plane in some ways. 5/5 as always dave.

  • Thanks kindly.

  • how did you adjust the speed when it was on an airplane? hooked up an adjustable servo and a push rod to it huh. Right?

  • Exactly.

  • probably less power

  • And By the way, I have an Air Compressed Powered Engine From a fake Air Hogs RC helicopter that Did not have anything that looked like an RC helicopter. I am thinking about Making a carborator for the air flow And it had about 2.5 Horsepower In it with 1 piston.

  • Do you know how much horsepower is in that engine?

  • This engine has about 1/3 horsepower. And that is very powerful in the RC world.

  • Between one terminal of the batteries that is supposed to go to the glo plug, you could put a switch in it to turn it off.

  • I could and have, but you dont fly the batteries around. Once it is started, you dont need them the rest of the flight, so no need for any thing except aligator clips. They make an all in one that clips on to the plug. Theyre called a NiStarters or GlowDrivers.

  • why do you need the two paralel batteries if it runs off petrol

  • You have to heat the glow plug first to start it. Once it is running, like any other model airplane engine, you can remove the power. This is not an ignition engine with a spark plug, but rather a 4 stroke glow engine.

  • It runs off of Glow fuel you idiot.

  • very cool...its interesting to see all the components of an engine so small..

  • Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.

  • Thanks for sharing that Dave.. it's good to see a bit of recent history. I've got a number of 4-strokes (TT/Saito/HP) but the one that attracts the most attention at the field is the little HP21VT with the aspin rotary valve. It's currently in a piper-cub and it's quieter than an electric. I bought that engine back in the very early 1980s - probably about the same time the Kalt was on the market.

  • Thanks, very kindly. I appreciate your comments and cool engines you have too.

  • Curious, any idea on what the power output may be?

  • I used to know, but I forgot. Wish I still had the book, as it told it in there.

  • Dry or wet sump?

  • Dry, but lubricated with the oil in the fuel, like 2 strokes. The pushrods, rocker bushings and cam needed a drop of 3 in 1 oil every 10 runs or so.

  • Hi Nightflyer,

That's a sweet little engine you have there. I did trawl through the comments to see if you'd put a date on it but didn't see anything. Originally from the single channel brigade, I haven't flown for approx 18 years, but have heard of Kalt. I just wondered how old it is please? I have an original OS FS120 in long term storage, but I'm guessing yours must be a lot older.

  • Thanks kindly. Well, I got this engine new in 1978. I don't know how long it was manufactured in Japan, before that, but it couldn't be too much older.

  • can one find a modern version of it or somthing close

  • There are lots of modern 4 stroke engines. Try googleing Saito 4 stroke to see some of the most popular.

  • wait.... 4 stroke with 2 pistons?

  • This is a single cylinder. There are plenty of 4 stroke engines with 2 cylinders, and even lots of V-8's.

  • wow after many years and that baby still up and running, now thats impressive !

As much credits we'd like to give these engines, but we also have to admit that these engines are becoming obsolete now a day.. giving ways to the new types of motors lighter faster and very quiet also less messy.

    Wouldn't you agree Mr Herbert?

  • Thanks. Well 4 stroke engines are really popular with the gas airplane crowd as they sound more realistic, have lots of torque and are way quieter than screaming 2 strokes. My next gas plane will have a Saito twin 4 stroke in it. It is a 1/4 scale P-51 mustang.

This one ran messy because I ran regular model airplane fuel in it instead of 4 stroke fuel, so there was lots of synthetic oil running out the exhause, but normally they are way cleaner than 2 strokes. Dont give up on em yet.

  • man sounds great. music to my ears.

  • thats soooo small and has a good valve system...:D niiice^^

  • Thanks kindly.

  • sounds so amazing, and runs amazing.

4-stroke engines sure have a nice sound..

that engine sure have alot of power in the sound for an such small engine.

  • Thanks. Yes it sounds very nice to me too.

  • WOW! That sounds amazing! Almost like a mini version of my Triumph motorcycle.

  • Thanks. Triumphs are very cool. My friend has a Trident.

  • i'm pretty sure that the cars in the 60's were 4 stroke, so , HAH, it's not the first 4 stroke to hit the market

  • Come on man...your stretching. It was the first 4 stroke for Model Airplanes. Gee!

  • be more specific

  • Since my channel is specifically designed around model airplanes and helicopters, I don't need to be that specific! Do you write this stuff just to be "smart"?

  • Those Kalt .45 four-stroke engines sure are rare now. Do you have the Enya 40-fc open-rocker four-stroke engine? These engines are really neat also. Thanks for the video.

  • Thanks. I have a couple of Enyas, but not 4 strokes.

  • i dont know much about these engines but do they require oil in the case since its a 4 stroke? could it be ran off propane? 5 stars for the post

  • There is no oil in the Crankcase, because the mixture of fuel is like a 2 stroke with lots of synthetic oil in it (you can see where it came out of the exhaust on the wood after running it rich at first. There is grease packed into the cam gearbox. Thanks kindly for the stars.

  • i wanna see it on a plane!!! i bet that thing sounds AWESOME on a low flyby! could you imagine two on a twin? oh man...

  • Thanks. That is a bummer about the crash.

  • Insane! nice dud!!

  • Thanks much.

  • coooooooooooooooooooooooooooll

  • Thanks.

  • it has a wonderful sound, like a big one!

    very nice

  • Yes. Thanks much.
