  • to be able to survive with 5 hours of sleep per day :D

  • woooooooo, i got in :D

  • i'm an ID student, and yes we take up to 4 courses on engineering and technology appart from the 5 design and 3 morphology courses (don't know if I translated that right). Other courses include ergonomy, industry/production, product analysis and design history.

  • @FAHpopups oh wow..so you guys can consider yourself an engineer design since you guys sometimes build the stuff too..ofcourse sketch /CAD etc...does seem like you guys are a combination of a civil, mecahnical egin Bio engin, architect, and interior. seems so broad right?

  • @MDefsquad9 we preferably work with a team since we know some engineering but not as deep as an engineer. when we make stuff on our own we generally spend some time studying the theory.

ID is so simple and complicated I still can't define it clearly yet... but I'm passionate about it.

  • @FAHpopups hmm interesting..to enter in a program at a college or something..do I have to be a master builder and sketch artist?

  • @MDefsquad9 Not at all. Of course, it helps a lot but you will learn eventually.

  • @FAHpopups i see i see..what do you learn in there like ceramics, welding, glass blowing?..im a junior year highschool student by the way..sorry all these questions..im just so curious and interested

  • @MDefsquad9 hah they don't teach that in desing school. You can take extracurricular courses if you like or learn by your own means but we don't learn that at our university. In design school you learn about the design process, the different technologies one can use to produce more efficiently a product and how you can make products more understandable/usable (or not) by people. It's not art or architecture or engineering or crafts, its design. Solving problems through objects.

  • @MDefsquad9 I recommend you see the movie "objectified". It gives you a very good idea of what ID is and is not.

  • @FAHpopups excellent movie!

  • @FAHpopups thanks I appreciate that and your help.

  • @FAHpopups cool, im checking it out now

  • InDe is the most interesting course, its what i would call a pure course, next to product design which is a jack of all trades and master of none.

  • this looks very cool, I'm going to school for mechanical engineering and I want to be creative as well as cognitive. Could it be possible to utilize engineering skills for industrial design???

  • @bluehorse888 Definitely. Industrial Design isn't just about creativity. You learn stuff about engineering in ID too I think.

  • Is being an IDer substantial? That is, once you get a job out of college, is the pay reasonable?

  • you are so hot and i might see you around campus that is if you are at hawthorn

  • in other words...a lot of work, very little sleep, expensive, and it makes you lose about 5kg every semester but a whole lot of fun (:

  • AHHAH it´s true=D =D

  • Yeah my friends in industrial design and he goes about 3-4 days with little sleep. Some of the guys at the shop stay overtime on their models and sleep there, but yeah it looks like fun.

  • That is my mouse trap powerd boat on there....!!!

I did that in first year....

  • i am doing my masters in mechanical engineering and can work on pro E, catia, solidworks and autocad tooo"( modelling and drafting mostly)

is there a certificate course in industrial drawing??? i am good at drawing too, can

say with confidence tht i can draw 2d pictures...and am good at the perspectives too...can ny1 suggest me where i had go for the courses....1 or 2yr courses would help,i cant afford the 4 yrs bachelors...

  • learn how to use blender first and then create a mars rover and then send it me so i can hand it in and get it marked

  • what did you need of knowledge to become an industrial designer?

  • A lot,

marketing, ergonomics. materials, shape, colour, creativity, etc.

  • Don't forget copyright and health & safty. very important.

  • agree, absolutely important. A designer is verry allround :P

  • Wow very cool video, I'm also an industrial designer from Mexico (UAEM), it's a good video to spread out with do we do as industrial designers, i'll post a video too from my collage, sorry it will be in spanish. lol.

  • this is what i want to do when i grow up :D (12 now) maybe robotics... eh wutever both very good fields

  • hey, i'm currently doin arts/law at melbourne uni, & i've been thinking of switching to industrial design cos truth be told law bores me to tears, but what holds me back is that apparently an aptitude for maths & science is very important to succeed in industrial design. whilst i'm very creative/artistic, i'm a retard where maths & science is concerned. also, i wanna know, what's melbourne's best industrial design school?

  • i study industrial design too. yah, for the first few, you really should know how to get your way through math and science, like drafting, modeling, aesthetics, etc. but those are the basics only. you get to enjoy the creativity/artistic side of yours once you get on the upper years.

  • Hi, I am an Industrial Design student, you really don't need any special maths skills, maybe at Monash (i think it includes an engineering component), but RMIT and Swinburne only require very basic maths/ physics - they will teach you from the ground up if anything at all. Some courses include an engineering component (double degree type thing) - Product design at swinburne for example.

  • Hi, Im a 4th year industrial design student at RMIT uni. You only need basic maths. If you want to apply you will need a strong portfolio(creativity!!). The only advice i can give is that you should learn about CAD- Computer Aided Design (rhino or solidworks in particular)It is a very competitive industry and employers will only hire you to be a CAD monkey. Product design at swinburne is a very good course for this. Otherwise just go for a graphic design degree at any uni.

  • hi my name is erik kowoll, Im Industrial Designer and teacher of models and prototipes here in Colombia. I I want to know more about your college dou you have information in video about Industrial Design please?? thanks...response here please...

  • Its Swinburne University in Australia. Click on "more" to view the details or type Swinburne into Google and find out and explore.

  • good overview! i study industrial design here in uruguay and was looking for a nice uni to go and study abroad in '08. which college is it?? uk right?? thks!

  • Australia mate, click on "more" to see the rest.
