I agree and disagree.. you are right about the count on NY Style + Ballroom Mambo and thier timing being off but, this two -even with the weird 2 + 3, 4 +1 count - is Mambo as long as they break is on 2 + 6. Regardless of what name one give it A, B, C.. 1, 2, 3... hA, hA, hA. 2, +, 3.... 2, 3, 4., etc as long as the break is on 2nd + 6th beat off the count in the music, you're "basically" dancing mambo. This however is as basic as basic can be therefore not to time conserned.

please keep in mind that this is the basic basic steps for the mambo, I just started with dance classes in South Africa and I've been for two, and we've covered all this. Obviously it won't look like Perez Prado, because this is BASIC! To all those who are complaining, feel free to add links of you demonstrating the mambo so we can see you do it better.

Thank you for sharing these basic steps and explaining them to the community. Mambo was almost acrobatic and unruly when it was introduced to the NYC from Cuban originals. Dance instructors formalized, slowed & toned it down a bit like this video shows in accordance with the prude attitude of the days. Eventually, it regain sensuality as it some dancers modified it into Salsa. This couple is demonstrating how we teach Mambo to BEGINNERS. Please be kind to their efforts or make your own videos.

@HonkyTonkKitten not really, salsa has 3 basic steps (front middle back) in one leg movement while Mambo only has 2 (front-back) when you move your leg. Also to dance salsa you need to constantly move your hips while in mambo moving the hips is a dance step on it's on not something you have to do in order to dance mambo. Also you twirl around more in salsa and the spins are not only faster but in many different ways.

Expert(def) wiki. "Someone widely recognized as a reliable source of technique or skill." It is a good thing that people engage and share what they know, but this is devoid of the main ingredient, that is "Feel" it is not present in this, and its doubtful wether they posses it for this type of dance. If you want to say you are an expert,of mambo then you should have indepth knowledge of timing sycopation etc.... So best just to take the movements and go learn what they dont show.

Ballroom Mambo count is 2-3-4, 6-7-8. New York On2 (some call it Mambo) is 1-2-3, 5-6-7 with the breaks on the 2 and 6. This dance is neither. The count is all wrong and they dance completely off-time.

If they do not know the difference between salsa and Mambo, why did expert village let them teach this then, if they don't know what they are talking about. This shows the basic steps but looks robotic nonetheless. The counts and steps are just like Salsa however and as well it should be. I guess a lot of people forget that Salsa can be danced on 2 or on 1, making it very much alike Mambo.

salsa, chacha, merengue, samba, and mambo have similar steps just the timing is different. so it may look like the other dances but you have to hear the beat in which they start to know which dance they are dancing. the mambo starts on 2 not one.

I'm thankful in behalf of people that want to learn to dance the mambo since this is free, but this is a very poor display of the mambo, the counts are wrong, there is not a bit of cuban motion and not to mention that i have no idea why he is going up on his toes. Mambo is a very earthy dance we press against the floor to get a stronger look and better hip motion. At least some people will be able to learn some pattern but please count it as 2341, 2341, or 234, 234 to get going.
