I feel like disengaging the AP and taking over the aircraft, especially when climbing 4,000ft above desired altitude, is a given. However, I'm assuming he was attempting to find a way to set his AP to Alt Hold instead of maintaining a constant V/S because he was unfamiliar with the aircraft and it's systems. Either way this seems like common emergency procedure, and something ATC should've been prepared to handle if necessary.
@RipFlm but flying is way easy on a totally ok plane... i flew my first flight yesterday and it was wayy tooo easy since i have 1000 hour experience on flight simulator..
The title should say "pilot lands plane, pilot dies". This guy was obviously a relatively competent pilot himself, just unfamiliar with multi engine or King Airs. If this guy didn't already have experience the controllers would have had a much harder if not impossible time trying to talk him down. A non-pilot would have had a hard time just trying to figure out how to call ATC on the radios...
In fact the reporting of the event in the title ought to respect the sequence of events and say, like you say: Pilot Dies - Passenger/pilot lands plane.
ive been using xplanes alot n i had a dream like this lol had to land a plane after the windows broke and killed 3 pilots ended up landing in canada lol
I don't usually root for the ladies, and it's a personal flaw I have to admit, but I have got to say, this woman is a true professional and I would be honored to have the guidance. Truly incredible work. Of course my sincerest condolences to the family of the airman and my highest regards to the pilot in command and the tower crew for their professionalism and courage.
this was a horrible situation...but...this poor guy flying the plane sounded like C.W. McCall. "Miami Center, this here's the rubber duck, C'mon Back" as bad as this situation was i couldnt quit laughing.
@metalbeak14 If he was flying a jumbo jet, it would land itself... haha I think its more challenging to land a cessna, than it would be using a computer to land it on a triple 7
I am so impressed with all who came together and helped make this landing as safe and, shall I say stress-free? I'm blind, and I know of a blind pilot whose husband was her co-pilot. If I were in a situation like that, and if my instrument pannel spoke to me, with the help of that air traffic controler and God, supposing I had such equipment, I wonder if I'd be able to land an airplane in a case like this one. Scary thought, but fascinating, too!
8:35 - ATC ; "King Air five delta whiskey, doing all right there descending?" KING AIR; "Errm we are havin' a hoot, niner delta whiskey" ROFL!!!! Amazingly good job.
The air traffic controllers here are as much heros as the passenger-pilot.
From the ones who took over other duties to free up those interacting, to the female ATCer called in for her piloting experience who talked the passenger/pilot down, everyone here deserves a medal.
Oh come on, stress and other aircraft aside, why did this poor guy have to tell ATC repeatedly that the autopilot target was 10000 but the aircraft had passed that and was still climbing (in v/s mode maybe)? Must have been frustrating - 'come on Miami, stay with me - lets go!' lol. Anyway great work by ALL concerned.
THIS HERO OF AN ACCIDENTAL PIC PERFORMED GREAT..IMPRESSIVE. HIS ENTIRE FAMILY WAS IN THE BACK....FREAKING OUT. YOU CAN HEAR HIS EXTREME STRESS. THE BEECH KING AIR 200 IS A MUCH MORE COMPLEX AIRCRAFT THAN WHAT HE WAS FAMILIAR WITH. SOUNDS LIKE THE AUTOPILOT WAS CORRUPTED..ANOTHER MESS. THANK GOD FOR GOOD WEATHER, AND DAYTIME VFR. AND ATC!!!! AWESOME!!!
The Miami controller gives the pilot the wrong frequency to Ft. Myers Approach. How he got the right frequency? The Ft. Myers Approach controller retires 3/29/11. We loose another great controller.
i listened to this after hearing it on drew and mike in detroit, they talked to the guy who landed this plane.....damn.....that is something to go thru but he did it...he fricken did it!! man has some big u know whats! great job.

you can fly a commercial aircraft under 12500 lbs single pilot as long as the aircraft is equipped with autopilot along with a few other things. The aircraft was a king air under 12500 lbs.

Poor guy, having to deal with all that while his buddy has died in the seat next to him. Horrible thing to happen, well done to all, RIP to the pilot.
@darkmensch Eh, the guys already a pilot, but he was only rated for SEL (Single Engine Land), the King Air 200 he was flying during this incident was a twin engine turbo prop, much different then the Cessna 150 or 172 or some other single engine trainer he learned to fly. So what he accomplished was a great accomplishment nonetheless.
I am a crash rescue firefighter at the the airport this guy landed at and I was on duty this day. Both the pilot and the ATC personnel did an outstanding job. The pilot that landed the aircraft had his wife and kids on board as well.
I want this to happen to me, but with like one of those big airline jets and a lot of people onboard, in bad weather and low gas. That would be a challenge of a lifetime!! For extra points, make an engine fail on final or something..
Shouldn't ATC have been concerned of the Oxygen levels at 17 thousand? I think They should have had the guy switch of the master once he busted 14-15k feet as they should have been concerned with the oxygen levels. Second they should have had the guy descend immediately once he disengaged the autopilot instead of having him hold 17k. Just an opinion from a fellow capitain. I may be wrong though. I don't know if the Autopilot would still stay on after switching off the master as a fail-safe
That female controller is awesome..calming voice and obvioiusly a pilot. Too bad the FAA didn't require all controllers to be pilots like they used to. The intial controller had too much going on, and did the right thing turning it over to the woman controller.
i know aircraft are designed to be flown by one pilot. I did my flight training in England and fly in Nepal. We are not allowed to fly single pilot in nepal either helicopter or fixed wing. strange rule but true. it even applies for cessna. I have not flown in USA so i may not be aware of the rules there. I fly beech 1900d and ATR for which i am type rated.

thank you for the reply. Well in Nepal we fly 2 crew compulsory. even when we fly beech 1900D. I have not flown king air. Must have the same configuration?
thank you ofr your reply. so as far as i un derstand the king air is a private aircraft and in USA a twin prop aircraft if private can be flown by only one pilot? I can understand for a cessna but for an aircraft like king air may be rules should be changed.
just one question both pilots unconscious? why do they allow to fly a king air with only one pilot. is it allowed. i am a commercial pilot and will not flty alone
The plane was still climbing after the 10,000 autopilot setting because there is also a rate of climb function on autopilot that will continue a climb at a certain rate of climb if it is set to climb at a certain rate of climb. It is common for pilots to use this setting in lower altitudes while climbing up to cruise altitude.
Regional airlines and most majors don't even have 3 pilots on the a/c for domestic flights. I would know I work for the airlines. I can see two pilots at a max for a small turbine a/c. I'm a pilot and I fly a small a/c by myself one pilot.
There was only one pilot on board. The man was flying from Marco Island to his home with his wife and kids. There were no other pilots on board this twin prop King Air.
no that is not funny, my best friend was one of the ones in the back crying and why dnt u just imagine the fact that u were one of them in a plane where the pilot had a heart attack and now u have no way to land would u think it was funny then. mr doug did a very amazing job and im thankful that him bailey, mamma terri, and maggie are okay. think about somebody else other than yourself
if i were that passenger,i would have ripped off my shirt leaving only my vest, cover myself in ketchup, and when the reporters try to interview me,they would just assume they were talking to John McClane
A Beechcraft B200 twin turboprop executive style aircraft took off from Marco Island, FL , short time later, pilot died in the cockpit, no co-pilot --- this guy was one of the passengers, thank God he had some single engine experience... ATC talked him down to a graceful landing at Ft Meyers Intl
Oh MY, it's like I'm living this with the Air Traffic Controller. Poor guy, but Bless him for having the common sense to contact a qualified person to assist. This Controller had to be on pins and needles. The acting pilot was exceptional in his determination to save his family!! Everyone involved should be commended and congradulated!! NOTE the person giving directions is FEMALE. You GO GIRL!!! :-)
This has been flagged as spam show
How many times does this poor guy have to ask how to stop the airplane from climbing? Air Traffic Control is fumbling to get an answer...
This novice pilot is awesome, great job!

You people are idiots - if you don't know what you're talking about, please do us a favor and just watch/listen.

He was in a private plane. There was no co-pilot.. and only commercial jets have flight engineers.. which are really useless now adays

nyyankeefan2009 2 years ago 5
There was only one pilot on board. The man was flying from Marco Island to his home with his wife and kids. There were no other pilots on board this twin prop King Air.

Co-pilot only Handles Radio Communications LOL :)
aviator2k9 2 years ago
they also do takeoffs, approaches, sometimes landings, make sure the gear is up, radios, and then sleep in the chair.
mandolinplayer13 2 years ago
thats is true for big jets but in small planes like grob tutors and cesnas 152 you only have one pilot and passangers and sometimes the pilot solos

flyerholland 2 years ago
no that is not funny, my best friend was one of the ones in the back crying and why dnt u just imagine the fact that u were one of them in a plane where the pilot had a heart attack and now u have no way to land would u think it was funny then. mr doug did a very amazing job and im thankful that him bailey, mamma terri, and maggie are okay. think about somebody else other than yourself

if i were that passenger,i would have ripped off my shirt leaving only my vest, cover myself in ketchup, and when the reporters try to interview me,they would just assume they were talking to John McClane

fastest2000 2 years ago
A Beechcraft B200 twin turboprop executive style aircraft took off from Marco Island, FL , short time later, pilot died in the cockpit, no co-pilot --- this guy was one of the passengers, thank God he had some single engine experience... ATC talked him down to a graceful landing at Ft Meyers Intl
scdisp200 2 years ago 5
the pilot died during flight, passenger takes piolots position, airplane experts help him land
Salvakins704 2 years ago
probably the AP alt isn't armed and the AP is following its set VS ?

Oh MY, it's like I'm living this with the Air Traffic Controller. Poor guy, but Bless him for having the common sense to contact a qualified person to assist. This Controller had to be on pins and needles. The acting pilot was exceptional in his determination to save his family!! Everyone involved should be commended and congradulated!! NOTE the person giving directions is FEMALE. You GO GIRL!!! :-)
San47di 2 years ago 3
No, it wasn't a girl. Sorry.
Transam941 2 years ago
The 2nd person that came on and began giving instructions on how disengage the auto-pilot isn't female? He refered to her as maam??
