Ahh youth. This is one of those songs that just got buried in the back of my brain, and I could never get it out. Love the lyrics. "Somewhere the sun is shining on this world but not for me. Two lovers' hearts are rising, how long before I'm free?"
I saw this Band Showcase in LA aroung '82...A really Hot Club....It must of been the Roxie....wow that was a long time ago....This songs still to this day lives on at Chicago's own WXRT....Huge supporters for The Burning Sensations!~
Jesus I miss the 80's. Send me back. I would even put up with Haircut 100 again just to hear good stuff on the radio again. I'm so old, not only do I remember when Michael Jackson was alive, I remember when he was black and MTV was white.
in the 90s, disney channel use to play songs to animation shorts, early in the mornings when i was still awake id still be watching. well this song was on one of the shorts and has goofy trying to get away from the whale from pinnochio
@psykosel Actually, I was looking for that exact video a couple of years ago - since I did not know who the artist was - and it turned out the original air date in the Netherlands was as far back as november 1986! If you live in the US, it probably aired even earlier than that (sorry for not checking your profile, but I am not a YT stalker ;-) ). If you ever happen to find it somewhere, please drop me a line!
@not2shy2say Yeah, KROQ was so good back then! Also reminds me of Request Video and MV3! My folks were too cheap to get cable until a few years after MTV, haha!
Me encanto esta rolita de New Wave de inicio de los 80's!!! Increible que esta música solo haya durado en los 80's y ya!!!......me encanta el new wave me vuelve locoooo
just a reminder folks, this song is now available on iTunes and CDBaby for only 99cents!.....brand new recording by the original artist....more guitar-y..those who have purchased it have said they like it as much if not more.
@Waterboy3399 1987 & 1988 sometimes skip school from El Camino H.S in woodland hills, heading to Zuma beach to surf, listing to this song on the way. Richard Blade played this song a lot on KROQ.
KROQ is now KSUX. Man if it wasn't for Rodney, Richard Blade and the Poorman! That station wouldn't there at all in the 80's. But damn it sucks now, damn clear water radio, it's Bush owned! I guess it can't last forever, although The Sound at 100.1fm ain't bad at all they ste on the right track!
@73Calirobo remember old world and kingdom of the dancing stallions back in the day! The stickers they threw out said "sit on the poorman" fun times for a kid like i once was.
@ArmedAmerican88 It was KROQ and 91X that brought the best music together and gave us so-cal kids something to smile about. For your information, if you worked at the 7-11 on the corner you would have worked with a bunch of coke head backstabbing motherfuckers. Today, you would be working with a bunch of coke head backstabbing mother fuckers. So what's your point? Fuck you.
@ArmedAmerican88 Here here, Jed the Fish stole a 45 record I sent in to be recorded. He was suppposed to send it back with KROQ goodies. I stopped listening after that. And Rodney was the only good shit on the station. Now its crap EMO and Heavy Metal. Fu ck that shit.
I will always remember the song, and the band, and all the beautiful girls I made out with in the parking lot of the Starwood, and the Hong Kong, and London West.
Love this song, but why on earth has Tim McGovern turned into such a right wing asshole? If you don't believe me, check out his website. God, what a prick.
@rayjr62 it may surprise you to learn, rayjr, that I was a right -wing asshole before shooting this video....it's even based on a Bible story(gasp!)...i wnet to your youtube page and noticed you called someone a faggot...is that a remark that should come from an enlightened leftist?
this song is now for sale on iTunes......Burning Sensations.it 's a brand new recording, I think you'll like it....thanx again for all the comments and support to everyone
I'm told the new recording of "Belly of the Whale" by the original artist will be available on iTunes in about three weeks..it rocks and is more like Police than this recording, as it's all guitar(s) bass and drums.....tested out on some friends, got rave reviews all around so I put it out.....available on CDBaby now!...only 99cents!.such a deal
I tried posting the cd baby link here but youtube won't let me.......just go to cd baby and search burning sensations or bell of the whale and should come up
this is a brand new recording by the original artist....the same but fresher....this record was copied a lot off the radio because it simply wasn't available thanks to Capitol Records....now it is, better than ever!
We probably passed each other on cruisers on the boardwalk!!! I liked Mad Max most of all, but I do remember Steve West. I didn't live there too long, just about a year and a half, on a couple of different times. Great times, though.
I'm the dancer in the red dress. Found the band because I was going to Madame Wong's Chinatown to see someone else. After seeing them, went every Monday night, ended up dating Morley, the keyboard player. Such great songs, some excellent nights in LA. Morley and I still good friends. Whenever anyone finds out I'm in the video, they tell me it's still one of their all-time favorite 80's songs. Capitol passed on The Beatles. 'nuf said.
Will Capitol not allow you access to the master tapes of this song or any Burning Sensations recordings? They should at the very least allow you to make copies of the master tapes. It's a shame. It's not like they are doing anything with them anyway! Interesting that they didn't like the song. 15,000 in a few days? Did they not see the potential of a hit? Geesh. Sounds like some serious record company issues. Unfortunately, they still exist today.
Hi! I am in this video!! I am the dancing blonde on the left in the beginning and also climbing up ladder. The other dancer is my friend Nelia Cozza. I never recieved a copy of this and would love one!! i haven't seen it since the 80's and decided to google it and there it was!! I had tried to find it a few years ago. So glad I found it!! you can also find me on Facebook. Lisa L. Dohman Nelson. Thank you!!
I am in the process of re-recording this song independently and will put it up on iTunes myself...waiting for Capitol to give a shit about this song for 27 years is not an option...they didn't like it when they heard it, only made 15,000 pressings(which sold out in a couple days) and even when prodded by Richard Blade of KROQ , Captiol put it on a compilation CD and did not even pay me!....an audit by the Harry Fox Agency turned up some payment a couple years later
My 6 year old loves his song! I tried for years to find this on youtube and every where else on the web. Bought the EP cd on ebay two years ago. Never thought I'd hear it again since the last time I heard it 25 years ago. Thanks for posting.
Pop perfection! A masterpiece! It doesn't get much more catchy than this! That chorus has a killer hook. I LOVE this song!!! It's fun! One of my favorite '80s tracks. It's a shame that this song was somewhat overlooked. It deserved to be a much bigger hit. It's a shame that Capitol won't bother digging this one out of the vaults again for a reissue of some sort. Cool video, too!
Tim, what is the deal with Capitol Records? Does it take them a lot of time to pull it out of the vaults? Is it an issue of finding the original master tape, transferring it to digital, and then remastering it? I suppose that this can cost some money. Furthermore, with all the record company cuts I suppose that it's not a priority for them. Shame. Still can't believe this wasn't a huge hit for you guys. Would love to hear the rest of the LP.
That seemed more like a dig at Martha Davis, specifically. Tim McGovern used to date her and played guitar for The Motels' second album, but parted ways with the band before their third breakout album.
"Belly of the Whale," Thomas Dolby's "Europa" and Gang of Four's "I Love a Man in Uniform" were the soundtrack to Summer 1983 for me -- and I didn't even like that last song.
Loved this song back in 83'! I ran out and bought the EP shortly after seeing the video for it. 4 great tunes on the vinyl. I like Carnival of Souls too. I only saw the video a handful of times back then.
When eBay started to take off, I picked up a second vinyl EP just in case my original got damaged. Recently, I got lucky and scored it on CD for cheap. You can still get deals on eBay!
A friend of mine recorded Pablo Picasso for me on tape about 24 years ago. Is there anything else out there?
This is one of my top top songs of the entire 1980's. My sister bought me the album, and it was definitely ahead of its time -- total Afro-Latino beats throughout -- but this was the best track IMO. I remember seeing the video on MV3, but it sucks that VH1 has the short version. But it's awesome that Tim and some of the gang have dropped-in on these comments!
actually they were going to use this song in that movie, which was inspired to great extent by this record and they make reference to it in one of the musical numbers....but scrapped it for the newsboys song, which of course is a completely different song with the same title
I always wondered what happened to this song; it was only played on the radio a few times in '82 or '83. Should have gone further. Cool video! Is that his middle finger at 2:45? I wonder what the steering wheel is supposed to be doing at 1:48.
I have the vinyl for burning sensations, was living in Bay area at the time. The song is about the lead singer being ticked off with his ex, former lead singer of Motels, another LA wave band, circa 82-83.
the only drawback of this edited version is the original EP radio release has a gorgeous instrumental section in the middle which, when performed live would take on a life of its own and is completely gone from this vid for time's sake..radio version was 7 minutes long, but we lied and said it was 5:30....thanx smegasaurus
thanks, we did this vid all in one afternoon ...the video crew was ecstatic, because usually the "artist" wants to try this and that or isn't happy about something or other..I trusted the director and assistant director since they had already done some big vids for MTV..most of the tiny budget was spent in post and even then some favors were done<:O)
divan: Cool song....I've never heard it before. I work with a lady who claims to be the gal playing the shell in the beginning of this video. Can you tell me her name? She seems serious about it.
divan: No, I didn't say that.....I work with her and KNOW her name.......but am asking you so as to make sure what she told me is legit. Don't tell me her whole name, just her first.... Her first initial is L. Is that correct??
wonder how far Mick Jagger would have got on Idol<:O)...Simon Cowell represents to me everything that is wrong with the industry...it's sing like MJ or get off the stage......and even metal is cookie cutter....stuff coming out of Nashville is gawdawful...originality is now a liability..
I want to thank all you folks for watching this old mtv vid and it does my heart good to know this silly tune still brings enjoyment.....lots of views since last i checked!!!. Tim ...I have a facebook page, but I rarely use it.myspace too..I'm just not geek enuff..wish I could figure out how to get Crapitol records to put it on iTunes.suggestions are welcome...regards and all the best, Tim McGovern
This is one of my favorite songs from the 80s. Do you think it would do any good for people like me to e-mail iTunes or Capitol requesting it? I'd buy it.
Knowing my luck, this is now going to appear three times: I e-mailed iTunes but haven't done Capitol yet. I did start a FB group on a whim. Don't know if that would help, but it can't hurt. It's called "Get the Burning Sensations song "Belly of the Whale on iTunes" I've tried putting the URL here twice, but the comment isn't appearing. ???
that happens to me all the time.especially after you just commented....sometimes it helps to highlite/copy your post before you commit then try again..or wait and try again later.but thanks for your efforts....i never really was compensated for this song or video..Capitol sucks...they even tried to rip me off years later but a Harry Fox audit fixed that. Living in Oblivion's royalties were "overlooked" and HFA got me my pittance.
It's on a compilation CD on Amazon, Living In Oblivion : The 80's Greatest Hits, Vol. 4. It sells for $20 new and less than $ used, but of course its not the whole Burning Sensations album. Geez, this is such a cool blast from the past!
Ahh youth. This is one of those songs that just got buried in the back of my brain, and I could never get it out. Love the lyrics. "Somewhere the sun is shining on this world but not for me. Two lovers' hearts are rising, how long before I'm free?"

Cool video, too!

we wish they'd just spend the $25 and put it up on iTunes..I even offered to pay for it

judging by the plays "Safety Dance" got , we should have used midgets

Tim, what is the deal with Capitol Records? Does it take them a lot of time to pull it out of the vaults? Is it an issue of finding the original master tape, transferring it to digital, and then remastering it? I suppose that this can cost some money. Furthermore, with all the record company cuts I suppose that it's not a priority for them. Shame. Still can't believe this wasn't a huge hit for you guys. Would love to hear the rest of the LP.

I love this vid....aside from the fun, quirky song, the set is original, amusing and clever....thank you, all who worked to bring it to us.

But it's awesome that Tim and some of the gang have dropped-in on these comments!

way better than the newsboys version
tenin12 2 years ago
actually they were going to use this song in that movie, which was inspired to great extent by this record and they make reference to it in one of the musical numbers....but scrapped it for the newsboys song, which of course is a completely different song with the same title

Great band. Had the album size single b/w Check Your Mail. Damn great tune, and wish they would have done more.

I always wondered what happened to this song; it was only played on the radio a few times in '82 or '83. Should have gone further. Cool video! Is that his middle finger at 2:45? I wonder what the steering wheel is supposed to be doing at 1:48.
lrd9999 2 years ago 2
I have the vinyl for burning sensations, was living in Bay area at the time. The song is about the lead singer being ticked off with his ex, former lead singer of Motels, another LA wave band, circa 82-83.

when it gets to 100,000 views

Well, let's see what we can do about that.
rhoardproductions 2 years ago
Hey divanola, what are the chances that you will perform this song live again? That is definitely one that I'd like to see you do.
rhoardproductions 2 years ago
the only drawback of this edited version is the original EP radio release has a gorgeous instrumental section in the middle which, when performed live would take on a life of its own and is completely gone from this vid for time's sake..radio version was 7 minutes long, but we lied and said it was 5:30....thanx smegasaurus
divanola 2 years ago
One of the best songs I have ever heard. Original and profound. When a song speaks to you it speaks loud. Turn this shit up and play it again!

Always liked the song.
What a fun video!

thanks, we did this vid all in one afternoon ...the video crew was ecstatic, because usually the "artist" wants to try this and that or isn't happy about something or other..I trusted the director and assistant director since they had already done some big vids for MTV..most of the tiny budget was spent in post and even then some favors were done<:O)

divan: Cool song....I've never heard it before. I work with a lady who claims to be the gal playing the shell in the beginning of this video. Can you tell me her name? She seems serious about it.
CJurasin 2 years ago
you work with her but don't know her name?.....hmmmmm
divanola 2 years ago
divan: No, I didn't say that.....I work with her and KNOW her name.......but am asking you so as to make sure what she told me is legit. Don't tell me her whole name, just her first.... Her first initial is L. Is that correct??
CJurasin 2 years ago
i doubt she's making it up

Thanks Michael, I'll tell her you said hello.....

Yes I know her too. And she is as lovely now as she was then. Begins with L, ends with I. That's all you get pal

@schrambler Thanks, Frank! Yes, "Lauri" she is! I see her almost every day, do you want me to say Hello for you?

Great vid dude! Thoroughly enjoyed it! Tell me is there an MJ tribute goin on here with the dancer and the hat tip over the neon light at the end?

wonder how far Mick Jagger would have got on Idol<:O)...Simon Cowell represents to me everything that is wrong with the industry...it's sing like MJ or get off the stage......and even metal is cookie cutter....stuff coming out of Nashville is gawdawful...originality is now a liability..

@divanola He would have and probaly still hates The Ramones!

This is one of my favorite songs from the 80s. Do you think it would do any good for people like me to e-mail iTunes or Capitol requesting it? I'd buy it.
AbsurdlySane 2 years ago
go for it!.i could use the money<:O)
divanola 2 years ago
Knowing my luck, this is now going to appear three times: I e-mailed iTunes but haven't done Capitol yet. I did start a FB group on a whim. Don't know if that would help, but it can't hurt. It's called "Get the Burning Sensations song "Belly of the Whale on iTunes" I've tried putting the URL here twice, but the comment isn't appearing. ???
AbsurdlySane 2 years ago
that happens to me all the time.especially after you just commented....sometimes it helps to highlite/copy your post before you commit then try again..or wait and try again later.but thanks for your efforts....i never really was compensated for this song or video..Capitol sucks...they even tried to rip me off years later but a Harry Fox audit fixed that. Living in Oblivion's royalties were "overlooked" and HFA got me my pittance.
divanola 2 years ago
@AbsurdlySane it is now available as a new recording by the original artist on iTunes

It's on a compilation CD on Amazon, Living In Oblivion : The 80's Greatest Hits, Vol. 4. It sells for $20 new and less than $ used, but of course its not the whole Burning Sensations album. Geez, this is such a cool blast from the past!
