Also, Steely Dan's lyrics are the stuff of an interpretational wet dream. I remember reading a way-long time ago that Fagen wrote the song as a kind of comical tribute to Miles Davis who would commonly wear a fez and dashiki whenever he performed in those days. A reporter asked Miles why he wore a fez all the time and Miles supposedly said something like ' I don't do anything without the fez on'. Knowing Fagen's admiration for Miles Davis combined with his sarcastic, off-beat wit, it became the perfect subject for a Steely Dan tune.
