and to betts: save me the irrational rhetoric and learn a thing or two re: pharmacotherapeutics and THEN spout your b/s. As for your "first do no harm" argument, apply that same logic to the prescribing of NSAID's or antibiotics; the death of a patient due to improper, noncompliant use would just as well make the doctor the "complicit" or "responsible" party.. If the drugs were in fact inherently and inevitably harmful when used PROPERLY, then you may have a point, but thats not the case..
Opioids are typically safe when taken cautiously and correctly. Any centrally active substance can cause death when used irresponsibly. Giving government the authority to regulate personal drug use (whether it be recreational or therapeutic, proper or improper) That doesn't mean that they should be kept away from informed and consenting adults who accept the risks/benefits.
The blog covers a wide array of topics related to the cultural, therapeutic, & scientific aspects of opioids, their medical use, non medical use, as well as maintenance based harm reduction approaches to 'problem use', which would include buprenorphineas well as methadone.. Are you as senseless as you sound...

Ada, great job, explaining core problems of this epidemic. Massive amounts of Rx narcotics are killing our children, and ruining our loved ones lives. Patients and non-patients, alike. The debate is not about "drug abuse", the debate is about "First, do not harm". These drugs come from 2 sources: doctors, & manufacturer's. The Advocates for Reform of Prescription Opioids, (ARPO), are proud of you, and stand with you, as you struggle to make sense out of the senseless death of your son.

Your blog talks about Suboxone and Methadone. If opioids are safe, then why even mention these two drugs on your blog?
