It is always amazing to non-chess players when someone remembers their game, but even non-masters do this... for Kramnik something like remembering the game and variations (especially with use of a board) is incredibly trivial, he is so much better than a silly trick like that :)
it's astounding he can remember the game he's played and all the variations, no matter the position at the time. he narrates in an accessible fashion.
No one is surprised when a musician remembers all the notes and chords in a song and can play them in order. In the same way a good game of chess also has rhythym and structure that comes naturally to chess players. To someone like Kramnik chess is a lanuguage that he speaks and understands with near perfect fluency.
N.B. In addition to being world champion Kramnik is also the strongest blindfold player around.
That's the problem with Americans. They think they own the world. Kramnik is Russian. He doesn't necessarily have to learn the game called 'chess' from an American, doesn't matter how great player bobby Fishcer was!
