Mental, emotional, or even physical each man, animal or plant or rock experience the world from its own perception.
Tarkovsky had an incredible power of description of his own perceptions indeed. I take my hat off on his memory but again there's no wrong or right here.
experience is - as I see it - not the same as a Freudian affekt. Animals also have experience. Why? So that they can improve their chances for survival. In our modern day society experience is not directly needed to survive, only to upgrade your life. I think the choice is there. Do you choose a shallow, superficial life or do you choose something else. If you choose to enhance your ability to experience, then it is a choice, so rational and in accordance to one's character, hence spiritual.
@velazquez2009 I wish you really knew russian for that reason. 'Coz the translation is very simple, and it's kinda 50% lsot of his origin ideas, primary source in russian sounds a bit different, eng only simplifies it all...
I don't agree with him when he asks what the meaning of life is and then answers that it's spiritual enrichment. No one can answer that question. It's something that probably should never be asked. I don't believe there's any real purpose to life. Just experience. Whether you choose to enjoy that experience or repel from it is your own decision.
a bit of an absolute statement there isn't it RThornhill? I mean to say that there is no purpose to life and that existence limits one to two choices, enjoy or not enjoy. What about people who are born into intense suffering and really don't have that choice? Sounds to me like you're speaking from a position of middle class comfort. Like flaminia5 says , perhaps the answer to the question depends on one's position in life. Perspective is everything.
... 'It is not a point that one can argue; but it is like the utterance of a man born blind who is being told about a rainbow. He simply remains deaf to the pain undergone by the artist in order to share with others the truth he has reached.'
Agnosis means "unknowledge". In orthodox tradition of thinking he's using this maybe in a literal sense against both western ideas of experience/science and religion/spirituality as sum of knowledge. Orthodox tradition is much more about feeling and meditation, much more material, no "christian science". You experience it or you don't. Thus easterners are less inclined to seek religious or scientific transcendence in words. But it doesn't really harm the purpose.
"gnosis" means "knowledge" in old greek, agnosis the contrary. The split of the Roman empire made todays Istanbul (Byzanz) the center both of medieval eastrome and of eastern/orthodox christianity. The greek cultural influence was especially strong there and got into the slawic settlements via rivershipping between Byzanz and the vikings.
as he is saying, if you think you know, THEN YOU DONT...this is one of the greats of art i believe. He means agnostic in the sense that without ego, more transcendence is possible. if you claim you have knowledge then you can't really know much spiritually
He really does explore these questions in his films, that is what makes him so lucky, that he not only had these illuminating ideas, but that he was able to put them into active use in his films, a F-ing rocket of cinema!
In addition to being an agnostic, he suggests that the attainment of knowledge is dangerous, and ultimately doesn't lead to a useful growth, aside from being very insightful, it is provocative, this makes it so powerful, it yields a response or many, leading to more, whose power IS art,
I think, it's unfair to lable Tarkovski as agnostic, eventhough he confesses to it himself. There would be no Tarkovski at all if he never was a bona fide man of Faith.
"Duhovno vozvisitsya" - spiritual growth he's talking about, is it possible at all if you are an agnostic?
He says he is agnostic when it comes to science, meaning that there are other ways of development, not only collection of knowledge, but also growing in spirituality and faith

It seems that something was left without translation between 0:28 - 0:36, I wonder if it was something related to religion.

he did say *maybe* we are here to enhance ourselves spiritually. but I agree that there is no real purpose to life, only what you define it as.

This is a very insightful comment. In what source did you find out that agnosis means "unknowledge?" I guess I have some reading to do.
Thanks
