Bruckner seems to come right up to the brink of non-tonality, or at least a very expanded tonality and then steps back from it. For me, Bruckner and not Liszt is the gateway to "modern" music, whatever that may be.
The rhythm of the "supplication" seems to come from some previous work of Bruckner, and then I hear an element of the climax of the 2nd motif from the first movement at the dischordant climax. This whole symphony is amazingly interconnected.
