@pizzakid770 I think he means that owning a gun should be a privelidge... while the ability to access the internet is a right. It makes sense seeing as the internet is important for free speech.
I was curious if Ted Kennedy was banned from traveling to Canada ? All Americans if ever convicted of a Drunk Driving Ticket can't enter Canada. Does this apply to American Polititions in Canada ?
Edwards didn't take a long decision to impregnate that slut of a woman. and have that illegitimate child! he didn't care about his wifes "perspective" on that very "important" sexual endeavor with that slutty whoreish trout mouth woman! he didn't take much time at all to think of his wifes cares or anyone elses cuz all he cares about his getting his pecker in some filthy rotten slutty womans wellytop!
It depends on how you define "right" I agree that people should have the ability to purchase and own a handgun, but I do not think it's a right in the sense that it's the government's job to provide a handgun to everyone.
Then you do not understand what a 'right' is, as most liberals do not understand. A right is not something the government grants you, a 'Right' is something that you are born with. What the government gives, it can also take away, that would be a privilege. The 'Bill f Rights' was not the new government making rules on what you can and cannot do, that is called penal code. The 'Bill of rights' reaffirms those rights that are granted to you at birth as an American. Get that straight.
Because he answered every single right or privilege question wrong.
People don't have a right to a free college education, health care or high speed internet. Those are extremely expensive things- they're expensive because we don't have enough of them to go around- and we can't afford the price at which there would be enough to go around.
I like how the ONLY thing he says is a privilege is the right to own a gun. That's the only thing listed that actually is a right.
Good thing this guys' political career is toast. That means he won't likely be in a position to take away our 2nd amendment rights or whittle them away more than they already have been anytime soon.
Owning a handgun is no priviledge it is a RIGHT. It's in plain writing in the 2nd Amendment. If this guy won't even acknowledge our Bill of Rights then clearly he does not have our best interests in mind.
The Congressman states that gun ownership should be a privilege not a right; which by the way would require an additional amendment to the U.S. Constitution. When individual rights are taken away, the road becomes paved totalitarianism.
LOL, OWNING A GUN IS A PRIVILEGE NOT A RIGHT? LOL. This guy needs to take a nice long look at our Bill of Rights/Constitution. Apparently, this guy thinks you have a 'right' to the labor of others (health care, internet service, wages, etc), but DOESN'T think you have a right that is clearly given the American people by our constitution! Vote for Ron Paul, not this guy!
The Bill of Rights is a list of STATES' rights, not necessarily individuals' rights. Read John's position on his website, you'll see he supports legal gun ownership. Just FYI, the US Supreme Court just agreed to hear a case on the right to bear arms--whether the right is for individuals or state militias. John is a big advocate of individuals' rights.
In contrast, the classical definition of right would include everything mentioned except citizenship, but actually obtaining the objects or services in question is the individual's concern, and in that sense, then, loosely a privilege.
Is college a right? It depends on how you define 'a right,' and there is much confusion on that matter. "The right of the people to keep and bear arms" does not mean that government is expected to distribute guns. Something the government is expected to furnish would be better described as 'an entitlement' and that is clearly how Edwards and most liberals define the word right.
As the saying goes, "you'd hit the snakes in your own backyard then fight with the tigers faraway from your house" and really John Edwards should be President because America will benefit indefinitely from his administration!
I appreciate John Edwards' motivations and I believe he is a pretty good guy, but I just do not think that big government/big spending is the answer to any of problems that we face.
r u serious. all canidates r rich.u have to have to have a lot of money to run a canpain.bush is 1 that ran away from the army and payed his way into yale
Interesting I thought we had the right to bear arms. However, Edwards thinks its a privlage. Who needs the consitution or the bill of rights anyways. The more I watch Ron Paul the more I like him.
No he isn't. And unlike the other candidates, there are years of evidence to support it. Ron Paul is the only honest person running for President, and the last chance for America.
Here's how you know you've been duped by a politician: you beleive in them.
Ron Paul is using an edge just like the rest of them for one main reason: to get elected. If you felt warm and fuzzy after hearing him speak then he did his job.
Edwards is going to win the big sha-bang because he is most votable, period.
"Ignorance is Strength." Did I just hear what I think I heard? Isn't he a lawyer? An expert in LAW? Has he ever heard of the Constitution? I think the second amendment alludes to "THE RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS" I didn't notice "The right to attend college."
Maybe Mr. Edwards needs a few lessons from The Champion of the Constitution
This is the first time I've heard Edwards speak. He answers sounded genuine, not canned. Nothing wrong with wanting to help the world, but perhaps it's time for America to do some work at home. Research Ron Paul and Mike Gravel if you're looking for a good candidate to choose from.
Among Republican candidates for president, the leader in terms of donations from active-duty military personnel is antiwar Ron Paul. "Paul has a staggering 52.53 percent of rep military contributions. ... But it also reflects, I think, that only Paul and McCain have proposed any serious agenda for our current plight in Iraq. The rest are grandstanding. When your lives are on the line, that kind of soundbite cynicism must pall." startribune dot com/commentary/story/1315485.html
The U.S has been policing the world since WW2, and even a little before that. We have only to worry for our ground, our people, our country. I have to agree Ron Paul seems like the best.
He needs to read the second amendment to the constitution. The ability to defend yourself is a RIGHT not a privilege. Also known as: The government fears the people, not the people fear their government.
The right to own a handgun is a Privilege??? He wants to provide water and an education to the world??? Come on man, who's gonig to pay for that? Ron Paul 2008!!!
So for the first six months your going to speak with world leaders. Why not work to repeal the US Patriot ACT, help to abolish the national ID Card (REAL ID ACT), etc. That's right you don't care about our civil liberties!
The fact that he answered most of the shotgun questions as "right" means he's in favor of legislation to make it for everyone aka socialism. If you believe in socialism then vote for Edwards.
This guy seems like such a panzy that words just can't seem to explain, oh wait, panzy's great. :)
If you watch the interviews with other candidates, you can see a huge difference in the confidence and reassuring vibe that they have in comparison to Edward's. I have one word for Edward: panzy.
mr edwards... im currently supporting Ron Paul BIG TIME! but to change my mind.....
#1 Do you believe our federal reserve, and more specifically the inflation tax they create, is a solid and resposible plan for our future, OR do you have alternative ideas for us...?
#2 Im most concerned about my rights and want to see small government.... what do you think?
#3 What do you think about Ron Pauls' stance about removing the IRS?
Removing the Federal Reserve is only part of a bad solution. If you do that what will replace the currency system? I think the Federal reserve should be more properly audited. Small government is also good if you don't care about social security, the deficit, public health care and all other public goods. The IRS is also necessary to keep tax payers honest, but it could be reformed.
Typical lib. Marching to the drumbeat of stale DNC talking points, no solutions put on the table, no originality of thought, blaming Bush for everything that has gone wrong in their miserable complaining lives and completely blind to the terrorist threat staring them in the face.
John Edwards; Yet another Hairspray And bullshit pseudo-liberal who bases his "Convictions" on the latest right wing focus group ;As the dinosaur Empire staggers to its death twats like this have absolutely no idea about the true reality of a world where two thirds of the population live in squalor so pricks like him can ride around in limo's pretending the US
is a garden of Democracy and fair play; Fuck off you corporate cocksucker.
rich: Suppose it is not really those "gov't programs" that are the real danger to FMC. Suppose it is that oligopoly has allowed for enormous corporations to "own" various industries, to pay off or support many in our gov't, make possible long incumbencies, "revolving-door" job opportunities for staffers, etc. Those large corp's are not genuinely capitalistic because they violate antitrust laws, and choke off the vigorous competition any capitalistic economy really needs.
richard: We think we've enumerated our legal rights in the constitution. We might say they are inalienable, but we've also said what they are legally.
rich: I dunno if that's a joke, but if true, it could sure explain a lot, lol. But I assume up above you were saying that both clinton and edwards are marxists? No? If yes, can you explain?
this is a true thing that happens! its not a chain letter! its kinda scary at first but it really works!! paste this message into 3 comments and press ALT F4 and your crushes name will appear on the screen!!! its soo wierd!
rich: Our oil company brethren affectionately consorted with the Saudi Royal family since the 30's, in front of people who didn't know or care about limited liability or "arms-length" arrangements. When the Royal fam repeatedly turned down any chance for a constitutional monarchy, those poor fools thought _we_ bore some responsibility! Some people have no sophistication!
Note to the YouTube questioner: Please kill the "shotgun session" for YouTube interviews. Many of our problems both here and abroad are not simple, and will not respond to oversimple solutions. What you're testing with a shotgun session is a politician's ability to think quickly under debate stress, an ability that I doubt has much to do with presidential competence.
I disagree: the shotgun round is my favorite section because it gets through all the BS and tells us what the politicians really know. I could have spent hours reading through Edwards quotes and writings before I realized he considers most privileges a "right" and constitutional rights as "privileges."
zyz: You will do far better in an argument by not being disingenuous. You just don't like him as a candidate. In fact, you know not much more than you did before, and you are certainly misrepresenting his views.
Wow, so the 2nd Amendment of the Bill of Rights is just a privilege...but...being in the country illegally gives them a right to be a legal citizen? Not sure of the logic behind that...
zyz: 1) we have State laws requiring people not to be mentally disturbed or felons in order to purchase a handgun, so it is by definition a privilege. 2) We have had signs on our southern border for at least 70 years saying "y'all come." If we suddenly throw up our hands and scream, "omg, you're illegal," we can be sued for being hypocritical jackasses. The logic is inescapable.
1) felon's can't vote. Does that mean voting is not a righ as well? 2) The American people are not responsible for the open border the government is. IF the gov screams "omg, you're illegal" it's probably because they were forced to by people who finally got fed up with their bs.
senshi: if felons cannot vote, then of course, it means voting is a privilege (however, I don't believe the vote should be taken from felons because it interferes with them becoming integrated back into society). The people are in fact responsible for the actions of their gov't.
Well with that logic then there are no true rights. The right to vote is taken away from those who are felons or underage. The right to a fair trial is skewed depending on how much money the defendant has. The right to say whatever you want or worship however you'd like is always challenged on the extremes that people like to speak or worship. So by your definition, then, everything must be a privilege.
zyz: In fact, the right to a fair trial IS skewed, even if we provide free attorneys to the poor. The rich should not have any more access to the legal system than the poor, it seems to me. Not sure what you mean by "say what you want." You can't yell "fire" in a crowded theater. In some sense, many of our rights are conditional or constrained.
Exactly! Our rights are conditional or constrained to protect society as a whole, right? You can't yell fire in a theater, you can't kill children and say it's a "religious sacrifice" and you can't buy a gun if you're "mentally disturbed or felons" (as you stated) - but we still have a right to free speech, freedom of religion and a right to...oh wait, you say the right to bear arms "by definition [is] a privilege"?
zyzzer: You have a right to free speech, as long as using that right doesn't endanger people's lives. As such, it is a privilege, or a conditional right. The right to bear arms wouldn't be a problem, but we have too many firearm deaths in the country, so the conditions to enjoy the "right" could be made pretty intense. But in fact, we hardly have any conditions on owning a weapon - any fool pretty much can get a gun.

I firmly believe that Joe Biden has a very clear pathway in this race: he is the Democratic Party's acknowledged leader on national security during a cycle when America's place in the world is the issue at the forefront of people's minds; he is the only Democrat with a clear plan for how America can withdraw from Iraq with honor at a time when Iraq dwarfs all other concerns of Democratic primary voters.
Giving access to everyone to college education in this day and age is the same as making sure everyone has access to high school in the past. Personally, I really like Edwards' idea that those who can't afford college can choose to work 10 hours a week a study. Without a college education in today's world many people will remain in poverty. But with it the prospects of the entire country and its population can be elevated. America needs to wake up and listen to their conscience.
And just because it DOESN'T say it is a right to have access to good health care doesn't mean that people in your country should die or go bankrupt because they can't afford what is readily available. And education? Would you want to make elementary school and high school a privilege. That would send your country back a few centuries.
I haven't read the constitution. I'm not American. And your unintelligent response hydrOstem tells me a lot about you. Most respondents here take the words "right" and "privilege" as pretty black and white in terms of your constitution. But if you were to actually listen to what is RIGHT as a human being it would be obvious that just because it says you have a right to own a gun doesn't mean it should be easy to get one and everyone and their dog should have one.
Christ, what a fucking idiotic socialist. How does the left-wing possibly live with their idiocy? A college education is a PRIVILEGE, health care is a PRIVILEGE, living wage is a PRIVILEGE, gun ownership is a CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT. I feel sorry for the future of this country.
Ewards, Kerry, Kennedy, Clinton, Boxer, Schummer, Pelosi, Fienstein, and their ilk...ARE THE PRIVLAGED... THEY ALREADY HAVE... They want to tax you, to give what you have to the people who they believe don't have... They want to own your money, and spend it for you... SOCIALISM, SOCIALISM, SOCIALISM. WHERE IS JOHN EDWARDS AND HIS ILK GOING TO GET THE MONEY FOR YOUR NEW RIGHTS? AND THE RIGHTS OF 12 million+ NEW IMMIGRANTS WHO HAVE LESS THAN YOU? YOUR POCKETS!!!!!!!!
"Rights" are those things the Government can't do to you. Rights are never something the Government has to do for you.
Freedom of Speech/Religion = The Government can't stop you from speaking your mind or from worshiping how you please.
Right to Keep and Bear Arms = The Government can't stop you from owning guns.
There is no right to free health care, free education, or a free cookie. Those things are services a government might decide to provide but they aren't rights.
The world is changing very fast, the future is uncertain, and if America is to show some leadership in it then Edwards has the right vision. A vision that is desperately needed to change the direction your country is going in. Better education for everyone (not just the privileged), better health care for everyone (not just the privileged), free access to information, more equality, less poverty, and less guns and violence.
Well, this guy looks much more reasonable than those republican fools who are now 'running' the country and then i'll tell you: i am an european. With a polluting industry you have to protect the health of yourself and your children. Education is important for kids. If u have the money the pay private schools that's fine, but try to look further than your own privileges.
Wow - his "right or privilege answers are simply scary. He picks all six answers wrong. I'm sorry, you seem like a nice guy, but you're a maniacal socialist, and I just can't vote for you.
I think your biggest fault, Mr. Edwards, is the fact that your deranged liberal view has you utterly ignorant of the U.S. Constitution. I love how you want to give everyone "free health care," but your career and million$ were made by suing doctors and driving the cost of health care beyond what the people can afford. Hypocrite.
Un-fucking-real. A RIGHT to a college education? (I guess others should have to pay for it to put you there.) A RIGHT to access the internet? But a PRIVILEGE to own guns?! And this shit stain is running to be PRESIDENT of the U.S.A.?! Go read your U.S. Constitution, you fucking moron! (Jackgivens, +1!)
US citizenship for illegals that have been here 5 years = privilege
Access to the internet = privilege
Please, everyone, study the Constitution and the founding of our country. So much of that is incredibly relevant for the issues we're facing today. We can't move forward if we forget the past.
i guess if we are worried about jefferson and our original constitution, it is a right to own a whole plantation full of slaves too. An education, health care, sufficient economic expensives, and the ability to be an American all follow under the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The supposed "right" to own a handgun doesn't protect any of these rights, except at the expense of others. lets worry about the true essence of our constitution, not specific clauses or words.
Having the right to your life and freedom, and the _pursuit_ of happiness does not mean you get to force taxpayers to fund your education and health care. How can you say health care is a "right", when something as basic as antibiotics didn't even exist when the Constitution was written? Health care is a modern technological marvel - a luxury.
Amen! thebrokenladder! For crying out loud why can't more people see the truth and reality in what you wrote!? I just can't understand my fellow Americans today.
Health Care is a right but owning a gun is a privledge?! Hilarious! This was a totally helpful video. John Edwards completely ignores the Constitution. I must admit he is a personable, sharp, charismatic guy. Too bad I actually care about substance. This guys like a twinkie. Attractive and golden on the outside but full of fluff. I hope he is nominated. Romney will tear him up in a debate.
C'mon are you serious? Edwards has no clue as to what he is saying and he especially has no clue to whats going on around him. Im voting for Bush again under the other box. Its all about the principle of the thing.
The socialist thinks owning a gun is a privilege? Has he not heard of the second amendment? It's called the Bill of Rights - not the Bill of Privileges.
How do you figure? Handguns existed in 1789. The Second Amendment states "the right of the people to keep and bear arms." It didn't specify muskets or rifles. Besides - concealed carry laws only work if you carry a handgun . . . and women and the elderly can handle a handgun better than a shotgun - which are both the primary weapon for home defense.
i can't argue about the usage...but even the amendments have limitations...e.g. you have the right to free speech but you can't threaten other people ("fighting words")...i think that was why he chose 'privilege' rather than 'right'. gun ownership is subject to regulation (not 100% right/freedom). the whole question was posed very black and white and he had to choose one of them.
Of course they do. 22,000 gun laws. Plus-if you yell FIRE in a theater-you get arrested-but you still have your free speech rights. You shoot a gun in a theater - not only do you get arrested - but as a felon - you lose your rights to own a gun and vote. Handgun ownership (and voting) is a right - but break the law - and you lose both.
Now that you have your wish it will happen! in exclatly 4 days. just copy this and paste it to 4 videos!! only one wish use it wisely and it WILL HAPPEN!!! but if you break the chain your wish will be the opposite

#2 Im most concerned about my rights and want to see small government.... what do you think?
#3 What do you think about Ron Pauls' stance about removing the IRS?
DevBlazed 4 years ago
Removing the Federal Reserve is only part of a bad solution. If you do that what will replace the currency system? I think the Federal reserve should be more properly audited. Small government is also good if you don't care about social security, the deficit, public health care and all other public goods. The IRS is also necessary to keep tax payers honest, but it could be reformed.

Note to the YouTube questioner: Please kill the "shotgun session" for YouTube interviews. Many of our problems both here and abroad are not simple, and will not respond to oversimple solutions. What you're testing with a shotgun session is a politician's ability to think quickly under debate stress, an ability that I doubt has much to do with presidential competence.
nicholas9999 4 years ago
I disagree: the shotgun round is my favorite section because it gets through all the BS and tells us what the politicians really know. I could have spent hours reading through Edwards quotes and writings before I realized he considers most privileges a "right" and constitutional rights as "privileges."
zyzzer 4 years ago
zyz: You will do far better in an argument by not being disingenuous. You just don't like him as a candidate. In fact, you know not much more than you did before, and you are certainly misrepresenting his views.
nicholas9999 4 years ago
Wow, so the 2nd Amendment of the Bill of Rights is just a privilege...but...being in the country illegally gives them a right to be a legal citizen? Not sure of the logic behind that...
zyzzer 4 years ago
zyz: 1) we have State laws requiring people not to be mentally disturbed or felons in order to purchase a handgun, so it is by definition a privilege. 2) We have had signs on our southern border for at least 70 years saying "y'all come." If we suddenly throw up our hands and scream, "omg, you're illegal," we can be sued for being hypocritical jackasses. The logic is inescapable.
nicholas9999 4 years ago
1) felon's can't vote. Does that mean voting is not a righ as well? 2) The American people are not responsible for the open border the government is. IF the gov screams "omg, you're illegal" it's probably because they were forced to by people who finally got fed up with their bs.
Senshi2k6 4 years ago
senshi: if felons cannot vote, then of course, it means voting is a privilege (however, I don't believe the vote should be taken from felons because it interferes with them becoming integrated back into society). The people are in fact responsible for the actions of their gov't.
nicholas9999 4 years ago
Well with that logic then there are no true rights. The right to vote is taken away from those who are felons or underage. The right to a fair trial is skewed depending on how much money the defendant has. The right to say whatever you want or worship however you'd like is always challenged on the extremes that people like to speak or worship. So by your definition, then, everything must be a privilege.
zyzzer 4 years ago
zyz: In fact, the right to a fair trial IS skewed, even if we provide free attorneys to the poor. The rich should not have any more access to the legal system than the poor, it seems to me. Not sure what you mean by "say what you want." You can't yell "fire" in a crowded theater. In some sense, many of our rights are conditional or constrained.
nicholas9999 4 years ago
Exactly! Our rights are conditional or constrained to protect society as a whole, right? You can't yell fire in a theater, you can't kill children and say it's a "religious sacrifice" and you can't buy a gun if you're "mentally disturbed or felons" (as you stated) - but we still have a right to free speech, freedom of religion and a right to...oh wait, you say the right to bear arms "by definition [is] a privilege"?
zyzzer 4 years ago
zyzzer: You have a right to free speech, as long as using that right doesn't endanger people's lives.

America needs to wake up and listen to their conscience.
gmagz 4 years ago
And just because it DOESN'T say it is a right to have access to good health care doesn't mean that people in your country should die or go bankrupt because they can't afford what is readily available. And education? Would you want to make elementary school and high school a privilege. That would send your country back a few centuries.
gmagz 4 years ago
I haven't read the constitution. I'm not American. And your unintelligent response hydrOstem tells me a lot about you. Most respondents here take the words "right" and "privilege" as pretty black and white in terms of your constitution. But if you were to actually listen to what is RIGHT as a human being it would be obvious that just because it says you have a right to own a gun doesn't mean it should be easy to get one and everyone and their dog should have one.

Mr. Edwards has everything backwards.
College education = privilege
Health care = privilege
Livable Wage = privilege
Owning a handgun = RIGHT
US citizenship for illegals that have been here 5 years = privilege
Access to the internet = privilege
Please, everyone, study the Constitution and the founding of our country. So much of that is incredibly relevant for the issues we're facing today. We can't move forward if we forget the past.
texdc 4 years ago
i guess if we are worried about jefferson and our original constitution, it is a right to own a whole plantation full of slaves too. An education, health care, sufficient economic expensives, and the ability to be an American all follow under the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The supposed "right" to own a handgun doesn't protect any of these rights, except at the expense of others. lets worry about the true essence of our constitution, not specific clauses or words.
glory31820 4 years ago

Having the right to your life and freedom, and the _pursuit_ of happiness does not mean you get to force taxpayers to fund your education and health care. How can you say health care is a "right", when something as basic as antibiotics didn't even exist when the Constitution was written? Health care is a modern technological marvel - a luxury.

I said to myself, "This asshole needs to look in the mirror."
What a loser Edwards is.

HANDgun...a different issue than all guns in general
acslater017 4 years ago
How do you figure? Handguns existed in 1789. The Second Amendment states "the right of the people to keep and bear arms." It didn't specify muskets or rifles. Besides - concealed carry laws only work if you carry a handgun . . . and women and the elderly can handle a handgun better than a shotgun - which are both the primary weapon for home defense.
cancerman67 4 years ago
i can't argue about the usage...but even the amendments have limitations...e.g. you have the right to free speech but you can't threaten other people ("fighting words")...i think that was why he chose 'privilege' rather than 'right'. gun ownership is subject to regulation (not 100% right/freedom). the whole question was posed very black and white and he had to choose one of them.
acslater017 4 years ago
Of course they do. 22,000 gun laws. Plus-if you yell FIRE in a theater-you get arrested-but you still have your free speech rights. You shoot a gun in a theater - not only do you get arrested - but as a felon - you lose your rights to own a gun and vote. Handgun ownership (and voting) is a right - but break the law - and you lose both.
