Thanks for posting this great Bruce Springsteen classic. The sheet music for Roy Bittan's wonderful piano part on "Because the Night" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription.
The version of this from the Live 1975-85 album is played quite a bit on European classic rock stations, like Arrow, these days: more than the Patti Smith version, actually. I think people are starting to wake up to the fact Bruce does the song better. This here would've been a far better version, even, if only he worked on the words--it sounds like he's just mumbling things to fill the melody through most of it. Great post nonetheless. Thanks.
This is the version that Patti Smith was given. I think she added a verse or two and suddenly she "co-wrote" the song with Bruce. She was given WAY too much credit for this song, especially since it was already 99% finished.
@GrafficGuy Are you sure that this is what she was given? This sounds more like an early demo. Bruce seems to be mumbling in places (hadn't thought up the entire lyrics yet?). I think the version on "The Promise" might be the one that she got. It's a lot closer to what we hear in her version.
"'Darkness' was my 'samurai' record," Springsteen writes, "stripped to the frame and ready to rumble...But the music that got left behind was substantial." For the first time, fans will have access to two discs containing a total of 21 previously-unreleased songs from the 'Darkness' recording sessions...Highlights include...the never-before-released original recordings of "Because the Night"
I appreciate you doing your homework, but it's well known that Springsteen did rerecord certain songs on The Promise including Save My Love and yes even Because The Night. Please give it a listen and let me know what you think.
By the way, the Promise version has Patti Smith's lyrics whereas the old recordings (bootlegged for years with the young Bruce voice) had incomplete lyrics but with the old lyrics like "working all day pushing for the man."
In the 2010 liner notes, Springsteen writes of these recordings: "Where needed, I worked on them to bring them to fruition. Many stand as they were recorded all those years ago. On those I worked on, I did what I would've done to them at the time and no more."
@GrafficGuy Well, Bruce is the one that gave her the co-writer credit when the song appeared on his 1986 box set Live/1975–85. So why don't we leave how much credit she should receive up to him since he wrote the first draft of it, OK?
@GrafficGuy...I agree. Glad she got herself a commercial hit with it but I hardly consider writing a couple verses as making you a co-writer, especially since rock lyrics generally aren't particularly sophisticated anyway.
hey if you want a dl link with HD qualaty send me an pm ;D

@GrafficGuy Yeah, you're right. I mean, what a cunt, stealing Bruce's song. She isn't a writer! I mean, what the fuck has she...Oh, wait...
Fuck you.

@GrafficGuy Patti Smith made this song famous.
Without her, this powerful rock song would have stayed unknown. Until now...
