However when you drift around a corner you set up the motorcycle to be in an upright position sooner than if you did not drift. When your are upright sooner you can hammer the gas sooner, which is FASTER

@MrVoss94 They are having fun. Sliding is slower for most mortals. However they really really really fast guys can do it like a dirt track racer and slide on the power thru the corner and save time.
@MrVoss94 they tend to ride really twisty tracks, and would have to slow down alot more if they dint slide also by spinning the rear wheel when they exit the corner and the rear wheel grips they can better acceleration because the wheel is already spinning faster than they are travelling if that makes sense? peace! oh plus it is fun to do neway!

I think it's so that they face down the straight quicker and can accelerate earlier. I questioned the efficiency of the technique as well but the pros even do it in championship races so it must be quicker.
the sliding is so they can brake later and accelerate earlier half way around the corner whereas in most other forms of racing you wouldn't accelerate hard until your in the direction you want to go :)
@MrVoss94: much like in a car, sliding is NOT the fastest way around the track. sure it looks cool and is fun as hell, but one you break the tyre's limit, you are gripping less, and hence going slower, than if you kept within the limits of the tyres. the fastest you can go is at 99.999% of your tyres limits, but as soon as you break 100% and slide, you are losing time.... but gaining major fun and style points :)
@SpeedyC362 Not true. Sliding and abrupt braking/regaining of traction allow the rider to gain a better exit angle from the bend. What might cost a few fractions of a second on one particular bend is more than made up by having the best possible line into the next bend. Motorcross is no different - you're always thinking one bend ahead.
@SpeedyC362 So worldchampions in Supermoto slide to be ... slow? And rally driver slide to be slow? In slow wery tight bends, braking rear wheel traction is the way to go.
@Rtype1000 On dirt, sliding is unavoidable. These bikes are primarily dirt bikes not made for real on-track cornering so they are a bit of an exception. But 98% of the time keeping traction will get you around a corner faster. they are spending 3 secs locking up the rear when they could go deeper and brake for only 1 sec. They are losing momentum at the apex when they grab and are slowing their exit speed down.
