Unless I had no other choice and I found a folder, I wouldn't ever think about using it outdoors. I understand the vid wasn't about practicality, now if you want to do a vid on something, do one on how easy it is to get a razor finish on a cardon steel blade compared to how much of a pain in the ass it is to the same on a stainless blade
@ArtistBlade1972 Ok well tell it to Spyderco cuz I barely tinkered with the Sage 3 which in the vid did slice paper (magazine which is harder to do) it's basically a factory edge. Besides uh what's your point on the whole paper slicing edge? There are edges that knifemakers prefer like toothy ones w 800 grit over paper slicing. I'm not slicing paper in the test I'm testing wood & the concept of how dull for a knife to still work in that I think I got my point across IMO what's paper to do w it?
@NeptuneKnives You were using the paper as a point of comparison. Both knives tore the paper more than cut it. A knife is made to cut. The sharper it is the better it performs that intended function. I've never seen a production knife with a factory edge that was very sharp. Most will not even shave arm hair out of the box. I understand what you are trying to say in the video, but it's very easy to sharpen your knives and decrease the work you are having to do...
Like many people like iphones or RC planes i realize you like knives . But you never really learned how to use one. Go look at bindlestitch1. he knows what he's doing. You could learn something from him and others.
@alxra LOL I know man I suubed that guy will check it out but in my defense i was just cutttinglike a mall ninja here for the sake of it. I didn't have any goals in mnd just CUT CUT CUT LOL it was just for learning, showing &testing the performance for us both
Video makes sense to me! I bet all the dislikes were from the subs from the other "genius" master paper cutter LOL. Personally I think a knife in any condition is more beneficial than not having one at all.
I would submit that it is much harder to make something with a dull knife rather than a sharp one. The test of a knife is actually making something with it. Using these knives just as they are now try making a tent peg such as Ray Mears does in his videos on youtube. The point of a sharpened edge is to make the task easier. Without battening or using any other device you should be able to make a tent peg with a notch with a knife and it would be very hard with your dull knife. Dull=Dangerous.
@Nebulax123 yes the purpose of this video was just to demonstrate that knife completely dull is still capable of getting the job done. Just info for those that say it must be sharp to work. I personally didn't feel much difference since the wood was hard. Only when it came time to whittle it wasn't necessarily harder to do just couldn't get the shavings to be consistent & smooth & definitely poo against cardboard
@oromoto yah it's just to show that an edge somewhere between razor & dull works no problem in the real world outside so some of those softer steels like 3v that emphasize toughness over edge retention work no problem like my CPM 154CM terzuola! yay
Great vid. When in the outdoors the sharpness of the knife all depends on the blade shape and size. I have a $15 cold steel kukri machete and that thing came dull as shit and will chop and cut through anything I want it to do in the woods because of the blade shape. My view is the smaller the knife the sharper it should be for outdoor use. I love using my Spyderco Bushcrafter with its zero grind and razor sharpness because it bites so deep into wood. I hope people find this helpful.
@NeptuneKnives Any time. I chop depending on the situation. When I am making a shelter I will chop because it is faster and the trees are smaller. I baton through log sections when making fire to have dry wood, that I cut down with a saw. I am pretty safe when using tools in the woods, have been since I was 10 years old so I have almost 9 years of experience using tools in the woods now. I like my Wetterlings 19 inch hunters axe but that is dangerous if you don't keep the correct footing.
@Bladedude92 I like your methods but for Me & Mel we like compact & lightweight. That's always been a goal for us. I feel personally more comfortble with a smaller 4-5inch fixed blade & batoning everything. Just my preference ya know? Warren Thomas told me once a knife broke loose & cut him & even Jankerson has had it happen so I'd rather not. Just like motorcycle stories I don't want my wife to get hurt even if so.
@NeptuneKnives I understand completely. I go ultra lite backpacking a lot and I love to have small light weight stuff but if its winter I'm bringing a 10 inch blade or axe for fire wood. When I chop I use lanyards and it really helps especially if you wrap it around your hand to add security. I've personally never lost control of a blade and it fall out of my hand and cut me. I understand about the wife safety thing and how you want her to be safe. You should check out the Bacho Laplander saw.
any knife at any level of sharpness can perform a specific task its just a matter of whats the most effective, reliable, and comfortable...I can baton with a butter knife, but why make it harder on me I prefer a sharper knife, that being said I respect demonstrations of any kind as it shows performance, always better than words or assumptions
Thanks for the vid man, I never mind watching a long video if it's from you. My EDC Knives are mainly used for general tasks (opening mail or packages) so sharpness is better for me. It's nice to see that even if you dull a blade it can still perform outdoor tasks. Good to know:)
Good video, Personally I keep all my knives sharp very sharp, The reason behind it, if im going into the woods i want a knife with high carbon, I like 1095, It will rust but can be touched up on a tree. Also having a sharp knife in the woods is important. Ever try so skin an animal with a dull knife? It is not fun. A sharp edge may not be needed but it makes life easier. Stay sharp
Being able to put a razor edge on your knife is very satisfying, not being able is very frustrating. The matter of HOW sharp you decide is secondary...at least for me. Anyhow I admire your "fearlessness" of testing knives.
Good vid i like to have a sharp knife tho have u seen the true storie movie 127hr were the guy got his arm stuck and had to cut it off with a dol knife and he said dont cheap out and get a good sharp knife.
@canadianknifekid Can you believe it? See I thought to myself if a razor edge is this super "thing" the tough guys think is necessary then why would knifemaker's use Titanium blades with carbide edges (basically knife saws) & there be knives with serrations. Different knives can be used for different purposes & as owners we get to choose. What makes me happy about this vid is now I can back up saying that I don't need a razor sharp knife to do outdoor work in the mts!
@sgtbeefy1 surprising results wasn't it? We hear from other channels like Sharpspears say that a razor edge is overrated once you start using the knife outdoors then I go & restate this & people think it's ridiculous. This answered a lot of questions for me. Can't believe that a dull blade works just as good only losing to paper & cardboard (which both you don't find in the woods LOL) Thanks for commenting & watching. I hope this vid I can use as a reference in the future in debates

@ArtistBlade1972 ur welcome to do a similiar test then with two of the same knives. Preferably Spyderco Sages so we can compare :)

@NeptuneKnives There is no need for me to do a test to know your knives in the video are dull. Neither will cleanly slice paper...

for my folder uses a razor edge is always nice. Plus I have this bad habit of cutting paper when bored. Pisses family off to no end.
