well you are using incorrect terminology it's GARTER not gardener or garden snake but garter snake but it does look like a ribbon snake one way to tell it that they will be alot thinner than garter snakes and they have two small dots on the top of their head

Looks like an Eastern Ribbon Snake. Garter Snakes and Ribbon Snakes are in the same family, Thamnophis, and they resemble each other quite a bit. Ribbon Snakes have a smaller narrower head that tapers at the neck, as well as really white lip scales. Good find guys, that little guy (or girl) is fat. They make good pets and tame down easily. They feed on frogs,salamanders,small fish,and sometimes worms and slugs. I had Western Ribbons and Garters as kid and would love watching them catch fish.
