I remember listening to this as a child and actually hearing the story. I loved it and it made me sad and it made me realize that not all songs/songwriters are the same; some are quite amazing and unique, like Harry...
All he had to do is learn how to drive. We loose too many artist because of that and taking puddle jumping planes 'the day the music died, Skynard, Rick Nelson, and so on and on. Such a waste.
Man...who can't relate to this saga? Perhaps someone who's never 'back-tracked' to the past. We go back at times not knowing whether we're looking to rekindle or simply revisit...we really don't know til we go...."I guess only time will tell." (Harry Chapin)
I saw Harry in Halifax, Nova Scotia, ('80 I think), and we got to hear both songs together. The most amazingly personal show...like nothing I've ever experienced. We took Harry up on his invitation to sit on the floor between the stage and the front row of seats, which left us sitting about 15 feet from him. When it came time for "All my life's a circle", we ended up on stage with a group from Acadia University singing back ground chorus behind Harry on his stool. How lucky were we?....WOW!!
@BluSteve Great story...totally believeable. He was always all about the fans. Never got that close during a show, but he was always good about hanging out in the lobby after a show and autographing the programs and kissing the ladies...my wife (at the time) has several signed programs and an equal number of pics of Harry giving her a peck on the cheek. Great showman and PR man.
Awesome. Of all the guys that have passed too early (Croce for instance), Harry is the one I would have really, really liked to have seen. There will never be another Harry Chapin.
For all the years I've loved this song, I never knew there was a sequel. Bittersweet, like much in life. Does anyone know if this was autobiographical? If so, did she end up doing at night what I thought she was doing?
Harry Chapin was surely one of a kind. What an artist, what a great story teller, just what a major talent he was. He left this world far, far, far too early. This is quite a combination of live Harry!!!!! Wow!!! Thank you for finding these clips. Goes WAY beyond words!!!
You see "she was gonna be an actress and I was going to learn fly" And here "she's acting happy" and me "I'm flying in my taxi...taking tips and getting stoned." Harry Chapin was not a one hit wonder!.....R.I.P. Harry
I used to listen to these songs on the radio when I was driving my own taxi. Life has changed a lot for me since then too, but I still look back on those days with great fondness. Thank you, Harry, for the memories!
It seems like everything has been auto-tuned nowadays. Glad no one hasn't been foolish enough to try it with Harry Chapin. Auto-tune hides the fact the performer has little talent. Harry has more talent than all the auto-tuned performers combined.
When your life takes an unexspected turn, and life seems to keep-on taking and taking I turn to this old song of Harry's and his Taxi takes me back to yesteryear
where I can sit and visit for the briefest of precious moments... "Where it can be
said, I ...s t i l l... remember you"~ ...........Bill*
I first heard "Taxi" while drivnig across country from college to a summer job. I had just left the love of my life for good--the one with whom I'd learned about love in highschool--and I knew I'd not likely see her again. You can imagine the emotions that still well up in me after about 40 years when I hear the song. It's a masterpiece that is not matched in today's age of drum machines and chanted, repetitive lyrics wtih no real passion. Thanks for the post.
I always had wished I could have seen Harry perform this back to back. Thanks to you, my wish has come true! THANK YOU for this precious gift! I found it just in time for my 56th B-day! Harry was one of a kind, for sure. Saw him play the last time in Phoenix 4 months before he moved on from this earthly existence. Will always miss him.
Harry has always been one of my favorite story tellers and these 2 song just remind me pf how great he was thank you for sharing brings back some great memories of my misbegotten youth
This was back before corporate america started brainwashing TV viewers with garbage shows like american idol -where artists are about as original and as emotional as the yesterdays mud slick -thank goodness I grew up when this guy was singing beautiful melodies about hopes and dreams and the struggles of everyday life -God bless Harry Chapin.
Friends of mine went to see this concert (from another city) but didn't invite me because I wasn't part of a couple at the time! They were not my friends for very much longer.
Just met a singer who covered this the other night at a blues jam, the audience was dumbfounded to hear a song with a meaning for a change. Thanks for posting this.
Oh do we need people like Harry, Lennon and Jim Crocie more now than ever. But we now have YouTube so lets use it the best we can, by having fun telling people that everything is going 2b alright.
I Have lived since 1972 waitng for this day I could sing every word with Harry. It would get the closest to a concert of his I would ever be near to him. What a llfe lived of happiness he had, and then one day on the LIE it's gone.

i've spent more time listening to these songs then I'd admit to anyone, except to my dad, who always listened to it with me.,. I love ya dad. And thank you Harry for giving us this amazing music!!!
the last several years of Harry's life (I met him in the Duluth, Mn Radisson Hotel Bar),, he spent raising money for famine relief in Africa. an amazing man, totally dedicated to helping others. I felt a real loss upon his passing. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING HARRY
WOW I never heard the Sequel before, that is so cool. I did Taxi at Karaoke last week and most had never heard it before, but it seemed everyone liked it. A timeless story.
This song almost brings me to tears, mostly because I know the woman he's signing about. Or at least a woman who says she is the girl he sings about, but hell, I believe her!
Was lucky enough to see him 5 times from 77-81, Was just getting in the car to see him play when word came in that he had died that day. One of the most depressing days in my life.
JUST GOT ONE WORD TO DESCRIBE THIS SONG AND SEQUEAL....... AWSOME!!!!!! TY VERY MUCH!!!!1 TAXI IS MY ALL TIME FOVORITE SONG!!! AND, NOW YOU HAVE IT THE THE SEQUEAL........ MORE THAN AWSOME....!!!!!!!!
he was dead before i was old enough to appreciate... i didn't even know what "stoned" meant when i was a child... but the older i get, the more i understand the poignancy of the song... and it's an intolerably sad song... and i love it.
One of those few, perfect songs. It has everything and so much more. "And there she's acting happy, inside her happy home. And me, I'm flyin in my taxi, taking tips n gettin stoned." Like johnnyboync wrote - a man who accepts his position, but still has dignity. Thanks for your songs Harry - what a gift.
Thank you so much for re-uping this after the other channel got borked. I used to listen to this like... twice a day, and for nearly a month, I was without it. You are a great man, and I wish you many happy children slash no children ever, depended on your preferences.
@GriffenMorivan hahaha it wasn't borked but Kirchnered.. The clips that got me tagged were all from Don Kirchner's Rock Concert. Shortly after he died three of them got hammered on one day.... I've got the feeling Don probably didn't care since he died......whewwwww:).
"Still nothing can set off your heartbeat as when you return yourself to your past" - Thanks for sharing this great storyteller of our past. RIP Harry you are truly missed.
Thanks so much for posting. In Jr. High school this was ok. When sequel came out, I thought, "cool, completion". Some 30 years later, I so understand this as I have lived many parts of it. You have to have lived awhile to really have it speak to you.
These two lovely songs performed live one after the other - this is pure gold. I'm so pleased to have stumbled on this clip. Thank you very much for posting it.
@MyyyClips2 - I love these 2 songs back - to - back. I had a bunch of CDs & some tapes of Harry's performances & hits but lost or misplaced most of them in the course of 3 moves.
