Couture was so scared to be hit by him he went for the legs first. I mean Once tony was on the ground he's a boxer so he dosent really know what to do, If you watch the fight Tony got one hit on couture on the ground, which was a bad hit and that madecouture get shaken up a bit. As to your real question... boxers should not turn away from multi-millon $ paydays, but don't pretend that boxing is the best form of fighting ever. If "Manny Pacquiao could make the same money in MMA, he would train for 1 year and wipe the octagon with Frankie Edgar"... That would make him an MMA fighter and no longer a boxer. I doubt many or any pure boxers could get through K-1, let alone mop up the UFC after 1 year of MMA training.

@theblitzchannel and the UFC's point about talking about Toney... was not that he was the 1st boxer to be in MMA, but the most skilled to be in the UFC. There were boxers in UFC #1. And as Joe said, the same holds true for UFC1 to UFC118.
It won't matter soon. Give it another few years and to be a UFC champ, a fight will have to be complete in all areas of the fighting.

First of all people, it was the BOXERS that started making comments about MMA, not the other way around. So if they want to fight MMA, then they can come on over as Toney did and find out there is more to fighting than standing up throwing blows for several rounds. The object of a real fight is to win. Boxing is a great sport to watch, but MMA is more of a "real" street type of fighting. Why would someone in MMA step down to boxing?

I heard a lot of young guys tell me a world class MMA Guy can beat a world class Boxer and I didn't buy it. I've been around the sport of boxing all my life and I know what it takes to be a world class boxer, so it was inconceivable to me that an MMA Guy can beat a world class boxer.

UFCF, I heard that argument a million times and never brought it, didn't think it mattered, felt like the boxer just needed to lay one on his chin and it was over, but this fight proved that indeed a world class MMA guy is better equipped than a world class boxer in a street fight (or close to it).
@Dobermite Much respect for boxers, but MMA Heavyweights already have the power to knock out someone in one punch. So it is not necessary to have the punching strength of a Pro Boxer. You just need enough strength and alot of quickness. Also fighting with bare hands takes a different defensive techniques.
I'm not trying to disparage the punching power of MMA guys, just saying boxers for the most part are better punchers because its the sole focus of their training from an offensive POV, They don't train to do anything else offensively other than punch, so of course they are going to master the art of punching more than someone who divides his offensive training.
But again, even having said that this fight proved a world class MMA guy is a better street fighter than a boxer.

@Dobermite You have a point. As a side note defending with bulky gloves is a different technique. It's hard for a bulky glove to slip through bulky gloves. Bare handing boxing requires to me more illusive. Regular boxing involves alot of pacing your self and waiting for the other guy to get tired and dazed and then drop his hands. With gloves it's harder to het that early knockout.

A boxer will beat an MMA fighter in a boxing ring straight up. But the MMA fighter is the overall more dangerous individual. If Toney couldn't anticipate a single leg take down, he was done. Dirty boxing rules in the street because punks fighting on the street aren't professional fighters. Regardless of what you say, and dirty boxing street fighter would get put out quick by a trained mma fighter.
@dashaman86 I've been around MMA cats ...when they get into it outside the ring, they stick with dirty boxing, some knees and tripping. They know not to fuck with that submission mess outside of the ring. I'm not knocking MMA, it's a sport that many like and you need skill and will to do it...but it definitely can be used in the streets, just certain aspects of it. To keep it simple for you people, stand-up fighting(dirty boxing) is your best chance of survival out of the ring.

Mercer and Williams were fighting in MMA but it was'nt the UFC. Couture was so scared to be hit by him he went for the legs first. I mean Once tony was on the ground he's a boxer so he dosent really know what to do, If you watch the fight Tony got one hit on couture on the ground, which was a bad hit and that madecouture get shaken up a bit. Then they asked Couture if he wanted to Box Tony and of course he said No because he knew he would get knocked out. As to your real question... boxers should not turn away from multi-millon $ paydays, but don't pretend that boxing is the best form of fighting ever. If "Manny Pacquiao could make the same money in MMA, he would train for 1 year and wipe the octagon with Frankie Edgar"... That would make him an MMA fighter and no longer a boxer. I doubt many or any pure boxers could get through K-1, let alone mop up the UFC after 1 year of MMA training.

@theblitzchannel and the UFC's point about talking about Toney... was not that he was the 1st boxer to be in MMA, but the most skilled to be in the UFC. There were boxers in UFC #1. And as Joe said, the same holds true for UFC1 to UFC118.
It won't matter soon. Give it another few years and to be a UFC champ, a fight will have to be complete in all areas of the fighting.

@theblitzchannel Jeremy williams trained at Coutre's gym and used MMA techniques in his 5 fights. Hasn't fought in any big promotion and his last fight was in 2008. Tim could have stood back and kicked the crap out of Ray's legs but decided to walk straight toward Ray and not even throw a kick, punch, elbow and took a great puch from Ray. Even Kimbo was smart enough to crowd Mercer, knee, elbow, punch, kick and take him down for a submission. Ray fights for the 3rd time on HDNET, Sept. 17

So if they want to fight MMA, then they can come on over as Toney did and find out there is more to fighting than standing up throwing blows for several rounds. The object of a real fight is to win. I heard a lot of young guys tell me a world class MMA Guy can beat a world class Boxer and I didn't buy it. I've been around the sport of boxing all my life and I know what it takes to be a world class boxer, so it was inconceivable to me that an MMA Guy can beat a world class boxer.
I WAS WRONG.
Didn't see the Couture/Toney fight, but the results are the results and a 1st RD KO is a blowout. Never again will I take MMA for granted, this proves they are better street fighters than boxers.

UFCF, I heard that argument a million times and never brought it, didn't think it mattered, felt like the boxer just needed to lay one on his chin and it was over, but this fight proved that indeed a world class MMA guy is better equipped than a world class boxer in a street fight (or close to it).

@Dobermite Much respect for boxers, but MMA Heavyweights already have the power to knock out someone in one punch. So it is not necessary to have the punching strength of a Pro Boxer. You just need enough strength and alot of quickness. Also fighting with bare hands takes a different defensive techniques.

I'm not trying to disparage the punching power of MMA guys, just saying boxers for the most part are better punchers because its the sole focus of their training from an offensive POV, They don't train to do anything else offensively other than punch, so of course they are going to master the art of punching more than someone who divides his offensive training.

I'm talking about a no rules, anything goes, street fight. This fight leaves no doubt that MMA guys are better equipped to WIN THAT FIGHT if pitted against a boxer.

@Dobermite You have a point. As a side note defending with bulky gloves is a different technique. It's hard for a bulky glove to slip through bulky gloves. Bare handing boxing requires to me more illusive. Regular boxing involves alot of pacing your self and waiting for the other guy to get tired and dazed and then drop his hands. With gloves it's harder to het that early knockout.

@frisbyrb5 Training in boxing and mma are 2 different things. Boxers are limited to what they can do in the ring standing up. MMA fighters are trained to be ready for any kind of assault. A boxer will beat an MMA fighter in a boxing ring straight up. But the MMA fighter is the overall more dangerous individual. If Toney couldn't anticipate a single leg take down, he was done. Same way Ali was spun around by Gorilla Monsoon and slammed on the mat in 76'.

I give Toney credit for having the guts to get into the mma cage. But there is no comparison with boxing and mma. You get a boxer with no experience in mma and he's gonna lose. You get an mma fighter in the boxing ring and he's gonna lose. Now I see Kimbo will give boxing a try. Me personally, I'd rather watch boxing because there's nothing exciting about two grown men grinding each other in a cage...

Fact is at ufc 1 it was proven that grappling is the best base to start from and it still the same 17 years later. To me, dirty boxing is applying some knees, toe stepping, tripping, pushing&pulling(basic throwing and slamming), elbows, sucker punching and gouging. Submission work...in the RING. You can pull it off in the street....if your name is Destro. I don't believe in MMA vs Boxing...it could go either way but the MMA guy will win probably over 90% in the ring and it's just unpredictable outside of the ring...it's up to the guys at that point. MMA guy stupid to attempt subs and boxing 4 punch only.

A few weeks ago a pro mma fighter had a street fight with some pro football player who knows "dirty boxing" the pro mma fighter(roger huerta) beat the hell out of this football player and just a few seconds, proving that a trained mma fighter is no match at all to any street fighter...they are trained to think with their heads not with anger!

@TinQuasimodo dude every fight ive been in or seen ends up on the ground not everyone in the world is trained at stand-up fighting. if someone is too much for you on the feet you instinctively tackle their ass to the ground. and choking someone is just a natural instinct as well. if you wanted to kill someone and had only your bare hands is your brain gonna tell you to box them to death?? obviously the brain knows cut off the air supply and the person dies and can do no harm 2 you in the process

Seriously, it's very very clear over 98% of the posters here have never fought as an adult in a public area(downtown)...I can do all the wrestling, judo and some other traditional arts, will I do them in a fight instinctively? Hell no! I've seen a shitload of fights in my short time on this planet, on different continents. @dashaman86 I've been around MMA cats ...when they get into it outside the ring, they stick with dirty boxing, some knees and tripping. They know not to fuck with that submission mess outside of the ring. I'm not knocking MMA, it's a sport that many like and you need skill and will to do it...but it definitely can be used in the streets, just certain aspects of it. To keep it simple for you people, stand-up fighting(dirty boxing) is your best chance of survival out of the ring.
