I don't know who did what with this but it is a great piece of time. I know I've seen this print both ways, some have the bass player and people positions reversed, as recorded for showing from print sometimes. Love the girl who swings left to right rear of the bassist. Truly and enjoyable placement however they made this. This was "heavy" for it's day I think. Some have posted roots of metal, could be. I can watch this over and over. A "swing" piece of history. Thanks for posting.
This outfit was from Lancaster, PA - Amish country. Close study of these young ladies kinda' hints at that. Not in a bad way at all, however. You can see a kind of wholesomeness there that one would expect to be more or less absent in gals from a larger, rough and tumble city. Definitely girls-next-door or the next farm over.
It's odd to me that in the debate over who created the music video these old soundies are completely ignored. I've seen some that were even somewhat conceptual--not merely performances, but little experimental films. Oh, and that bassist definitely looks like he's straight out of "Reefer Madness!"
I think he's got a touch of the madness... You could go back to the first sound pictures. They put music to images from the start, whether a film of a band or cartoon animals romping about to music. But I think the "music video" should be considered as a short film used much like the hit single was used, to sell a band and its music. Sure, they did this back then, but not with the promotional push we saw in the 1980s. I remember saturation of Madonna's "Lucky Star"...
They are playing "A Study In Brown", composed by Larry Clinton in 1936 or 1937 and published by Lincoln Music. The stock arrangement for big band could be purchased at many music stores and consisted of a violin part, 3 trumpets, 2 bones, piano, bass, drums, guitar and 4 saxes (AATB). Many elements of the stock chart are here but of course what we're listening to has been completely re-arranged. Neat!
What fresh hell is this?

Any idea of the size if the bass? It 's huge! Looks bigger than 4/4 so... 6/4 maybe?
derfpa1 2 years ago
I think that Reg Kehoe low growth, therefore and the contrabass seems huge!))
VitalyVeselovsky 2 years ago
Ahh, i think you're right. I didn't think of it like that. :P Since I'm >185cm tall it's weird to think of a bass that big in comparison. :P

why are they all playing left-handed?
nuages 5 years ago
They're playing left-handed because the film was printed backwards for rear projection on a screen inside a Panoram, an early video jukebox.
