I'm only sixteen, and this is by far my favorite song of all time. I thank my dad for introducing me to such great music. It's more meaningful than most of the songs these days. Billy Joe really is a true legend.
@ChetR THIS, so much. I give Big N Rich credit for recognizing a legend, but arrogant John Rich has to make it all about him and fuck it up. Why can't we find an original version and post here? Head and shoulders above this one.
Hey jakeat3web.... the lyrics are " please try to raise your children right" ..what an ugly thing to say.. unless you've walked in someone else's shoes, you have no right to think you can go there.. his son died of an overdose, yes.. but he didn't give it to him... he was an adult and one hell of a guitar player, but he made his own decision .. what did Billy do, when he got the news just before going onstage , he walked out there and did it anyway... I agree with LJB .. shame, shame shame..
@jakeat3web I figured you were from England or Canada, that's where all the judgemental do nothing, stay away from the controversy freaks now are.The USA is still in the fight trying to make the world better, not resigned to the one- world atheistic culture that Stalin , Mao-tse-Tung,or even BF Skinner envisioned."Boy,that was good!" His died in his thirties, would you say the same about Jimi Hendrix's parent-died at 27- or Van Gough's parents's(people seem to forget he committed suicide,
Ten people too stupid to even know what the song represents much less how great a song this is. I want this song played at my funeral.God Bless Billy Joe !!!

me and my dad covered this for my grandparents 50th anniversary and it was such a perfect song for them. this song is gonna live forever in our hearts thank you!
I have been looking for this song forever. I only had a couple lines of the lyrics - cross that river and catch tomorrow now. I thought it was Willie, however, I know now it is Billy Joe. I'm keeping this forever.
"Dream of angels and sunshine, rivers of red wine, and orange peel blue..." Great lyric, as is "I'm gonna live forever, I'm gonna cross that river, I'm gonna chase tomorrow now..."
Well.... the song, and Billy Joe, are GREAAT. Just go find the version from CD Tramp On Your Street, with guitar and harmony from Eddie. NO Big and Rich assholes!!!

@CadJack2005 hahha very well said man,I am not from Texas....I am from Canada, but your state has produced some verey very talented artists,Texas has amazing musical talent,And it is very accepting of great writing as far as songs are concerned.Props.
@KurtMoss Nope in fact I was not aware nor do I care the Robert duval ever sang anything this is real country music not pop crap they call country today Red necks we all may be but the fact is every one and there brother are trying hard to be just like us Ha I'd say your the one out of the loop
Would you assholes quit complaining? Jesus, I get so tired of hearing "so n' so isn't real country, blah, blah, blah." I swear, some country fans have such an unhinged hatred for any musician that isn't Hank Williams Sr.
I'd have to say that Big 'N' Rich have done some incredible songs together, and some of John Rich's solo work is also incredible. However, once in a while, they lend their incredible vocal harmonies to some unforgettable songs, a fine example of which is featured here, with Billy Joe Shaver holding forth on vocals. Thanks to all three men for recording this unforgettable song. I'd also like to wish an RIP to Billy's son, Eddy, and for Billy himself, along with BNR, to sing this song live for me.
Splendide voix et titre...... optimisme ..belle la vie dans ses differents moments ..et musique excellente !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Merci beau partage vraiment ANTONELLA
Still alive? Billy Joe just got off for shooting a man in the face! Hell yes, he's still alive and still a bad ass. It's tragic that most people don't realize who their country idols look(ed) up to.
you can tell whos using autotune and whos really singing. billy joe came from the generation where people could really sing and do so about real things. now all nashville is, is a bunch of shit.
@phaedres seems everyone is coming here actually, Austin is overrun with Califoreigners and New Yorkuhs, hell even Bush was an imported yankee. Maybe it's y'all that should just stay the hell outta Texas
I remember when a "red neck" was someone who worked from before sunup to after sundown out in the fields tryin' to feed his family and praying while he did it. Back before it meant ignorant, loudmouthed drunken bigots. Billy Joe is cool and so are the dudes that helped get him a larger audience.
trully a country music legend. and he used to be a high tempered one at that. lol godbless. i miss the old days. but i guess if it wasnt for new days then how could we look back at the old days.?????????????
@MetalSkater: Yeah, this guy is great, still bringing it true and old school like the music I was raised on.....I've since grown up and started listening to bands like Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, and Muse. But this guy along with a handful of others are some of my favorites!!! Definatly check out some old Hank Williams Sr. and Johnny Cash.
I loved this song when I first heard it. I also think it was pretty cool that Big & Rich were featured singing the song's chorus in the video. However, I don't know what to say about "Tramp On Your Street," other than I heard George Jones' version of it a few years ago, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
@metalskater9 if you like that song' live forever" I think you would really like "tramp on your street" billy joe shaver" he not only writes the songs he lives them
I Lived In Austin,Tx For years Back in The Late70s,and got to see Billy Joe Lots of times! And If You saw him Sing this song Now,He can Barly Make it Though this song without Tears,Hes A GREAT Songwriter and Singer!Great Luck With The Court Case,..Keep Playin Music!,...
Closed minded weenies. Whats wrong with big and rich? So there not the kind of music you're used to, that doen't make them bad people! There great singers, Big Kenny preaches love and understanding (something yall could stand to learn) and John Rich writes so many great country songs. Everyone thinks of save a horse but what about the ton of other great stuff they have done and sung???
Did this song with a friend of mine at several shows. It still sends a shiver up my spine and puts a tear in my eye. Billy Joe is certainly a country music icon. Thanks for the video.
The first time i heard this song was when i was 14. My dad called me and my mom and sisters into the living room to listen to it. He dedicated this song to my mom. He was diagnosed with cancer in 1997 and passed away jan 3 2010. He this song is so touching and has a lot of meaning in it and to my family. May you RIP daddy! We love you! He will live forever!
@JimCashFan I think you got yourself mixed up, buddy. You mean Sugarland can shove their garbage pop country up their asses, Big N Rich sure as hell ain't outlaw country or the good ole' stuff, but they're pretty good. IMO.
I personally don't like Big and Rich. I don't think their music is "country", like most artists that country radio plays these days. That said, I have no problem with them paying tribute to a legend...
How many times has BJS recorded this song? Several. So what if he asked B&R to be in it? Obviously he thought enough of them to ask them to help him out. I'll take Billy Joe's opinion on musicians over any of you on here.
It is a great song, but it can't touch on the loss of his son, due in part that his son helped him write it. This song is one of my all time favorites.
I might have posted in this comment thread already, but I don't mind repeating myself.
This version is so slicked-down and overproduced that it almost ruins the whole song. And Big & Rich's Shaver-less outro is horrible.
That being said, the song itself is one of the best folk songs ever written, period. It's virtually flawless. The version on Unshaven can almost reduce me, a grown-ass man, to tears. Listen to that version instead of this, I beg you.
never did post about the Cain show in Oklahoma I know the drunks name but not gonna say it to give him free reconization but he ruined the ending of BJS show But Damn It was a Greattttttt SHOW !!! had a violin girl that kicked ass sorry missed her name if she reads this .. @JimCashFan I think you got yourself mixed up, buddy. You mean Sugarland can shove their garbage pop country up their asses, Big N Rich sure as hell ain't outlaw country or the good ole' stuff, but they're pretty good. IMO.

I saw Billy Joe at Eddies Attic the other night, he was awesome. His opening act, Ken Will Morton, was incredible too. Great show!

Big and Rich have paid tribute to Billy Joe many times.
Why do people have to denigrate others for no apparent reason? You need to feel Billy Joe's words . When you get it, you'll be much happier.
Peace

I personally don't like Big and Rich. I don't think their music is "country", like most artists that country radio plays these days. That said, I have no problem with them paying tribute to a legend...

How many times has BJS recorded this song? Several. So what if he asked B&R to be in it? Obviously he thought enough of them to ask them to help him out. I'll take Billy Joe's opinion on musicians over any of you on here.

Big & Rich ought to be kissing this guy's feet, not taking a prominent spot in the video.

It is a great song, but it can't touch on the loss of his son, due in part that his son helped him write it. This song is one of my all time favorites.
mulley04 2 years ago 2
For a son to precede his father is a tragedy in itself, I suspect this song touches on his loss.

Billy Joe is always for real..
big and Rich wanted to honor him. Guess 8th of November is overproduced.
Get a grip. Try to feel the heart of the music.
Old five and dimer like me.

Amen brother, couldn't of said it any better. A typical slick "Trashville" production.

Big and Rich need to go far far away. And everyone knows the good stuff comes from Austin.
