There's a button for star power to the right of the strum bar (his right) so all he has to do is hit it with his wrist to activate the star power.

I myself find it a lot easier than lifting the guitar but it takes practice to do it without breaking your combo.

You should use that guitar more often in other videos. the thing i like about Rockband guitars like the one used on this video is that they are very quiet so you don't hear the strumming and tapping noises in videos with a camera instead of a capture card.
