I have 3gs. stuck on the apple logo. To turn it off I have to hold top and home for about 10 and then keep holding hte home. Then when it is plugged in i try to do the reboot tethered. It just sits there. and the phone doesn't turn on. Is it supposed to be on. am i doing something wrong.?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING! I've spent my entire day reading, watching, and googling any possible way to retore my 3gs which was originally unlocked and on the 4.2.1. update. I've tried many different methods dozens of times trying to fix this, but to no avail. Your instructions were very simple and straight forward (I'm not very computer literate :(). However, I got stuck after installing cydia, It got stuck on the apple logo again, but I tether rebooted with redsn0w and it worked! AWESOME!
