Talking Indian Ringneck

Awwh so cute!:) do you think that ringnecks can be apartment birds? Or are they too loud? And what cage size do you use for him?

@sprinky311 Hi, IRNs can be loud if bored or left on their own for long periods of time. Bigger the cage the better. Remember when toys, food bowl, water bowl, perches etc are added to the cage, it all takes up space. Need enough room so the bird can still flap wings without hitting the top or sides of the cage, plus allow room for their elegantly long tail. :o) Oh, and bar spacing around the 3/4", no bigger incase they get their head stuck.

@TheRorocool123 My bird used to do the same. But I trained it and but alot of afford to train though. It's takes alot of hard work! If u take your bird out every day then don't take it out one day and then after a day take it out if he bites u then put it back in the cage and touch his head. But u have to feed him stuff and if u feed him with your hand then try not to feed him from ur hand for some time. Take the bird out and shower it Coz birds have to shower. Then if he bites again but it in

@DaDySerKStR1 Hi, this boy already talked when I bought him, but I have other aviary birds that talk, they copied this one. Basically say the same word over and over daily and after some time, the bird may talk. Not all birds will or can talk though. I have a grey ringie inside that talks heaps, s/he copied my other talking parrot.

@WelcometoAusraila09 Some ringnecks do not take kindly to other birds, sometimes even their own kind. If you chose to get a IRN, I definitely wouldn't house them together in the same cage and only allow them to interact together under strict supervision in the house (if that is where you have your birds). A ringies beak is much bigger than a cockatiel and can do quite a lot of damage in a short amount of time.

@OutDoorsExpertiece It depends on space, the amount of time you can spend as well as what you can afford, and what you are after from a bird, ie: cuddly, talk etc as they have different personalities.

@ickallaura Hi, from aprox the age of 2 or 3 years, males have a black ring around the neck like this one has where females do not. Under the age mentioned, a DNA or surgical test can be done.

This one was talking when I bought him.

I do have a 12 month old ringie that I hand raised and is talking. But I did not actually teach him to talk. He picked up words from me talking to my CAG.

I guess it is up to the bird if it wants to talk or not.

Indian Ringnecks are NOT the same as Alexandrine parrots.

IRNs are smaller birds, Alexs' also have red on the shoulder.

There are also cross breeds of the two.

I bought my breeding pairs from breeders and handraised some of the babies. I am not sure if they sell them in petsmart etc. Price depends on your location (country, state and city).

@geldtelt At 6 weeks of age, your ringneck will barely be weaned, (my babies aren't weaned until at least 8-10 weeks of age).

It will be quite a few months before your ringie starts talking, if s/he chooses to. Not all birds will talk.

There is so many mutations of IRNs now, ranging from those you mentioned to Albino, (white), Grey, GreyGreen, Greygreen Cinnamon, Turquoise, Clear tails, Cobalt, Violets......new colours being bred all the time. :o)

Not all birds will talk, but most do.

Just say the same word/phrase over and over again and praise when s/he begins to repeat it.

Saying the first word is the hardest for them, once they have mastered that, the other words are much easier and quicker. :o)

Honestly, it's pretty common for Ringnecks to not begin vocalizing real words until about a year. It's not the rule but it's what I've seen and heard. For his age, I would certainly work speaking simple repetitive words and or sounds. They will eventually start working them into their normal chatterbox routine.

I have been told tame parents breed.

I have a tame hen that I am hoping will breed this year.

my mom has been hinting that she would like to breed our irn, but i was wondering if it is possiable to breed to irns that are both tame. i was told that this wasnt possiable. is there any truth to this. i have a male and im currently looking for a female but im not sure if a hand fed female would be suitable for breeding

If your bird likes the mate you chose for it, it may breed, not matter how tame. However, it may then become a little less tame to you, as its bond will be with its mate instead of you.

My blue IRN knows how to say the same things. We're trying to teach him how to say 'Hello' currently, actually.

I should say blue/green. He was blue when we bought him, but he's slowly turning green.
