The office being a prime example for starting the trend in the US for awkward, well-balanced humour. Seriously, apart from Modern Family, Arrested Development and Malcolm in the middle, live action comedy in the US is fucking terrible. Laughter tracks and catch phrases instead of jokes. the big bang theory, how I met your mother, king of queens. They aren't funny, they appeal to morons.

I think theere are levels of comedy which appeal to certain people, types of comedy aimed at types of people. Its called choosing a target audience. Balancing the content against the mental ability of the recipient is important.

@purpleturtlification I love modern family, my original comment was about how brilliant the show is. Including separate production material like this. My gripe is with American sitcoms largely seeming like they're aimed at morons. There's no need, America has fantastic writers and performers, yet we get stuck with two and a half men, which wins awards and is popular. I literally don't understand the support for it, its awful. Another culprit is the big bang theory. Utter tripe.

@TheJupite I agree it appeals to some and not to others. We call them audiences, or target markets. Some are considered "broad" and targeted at a certain type of person, hence the time of day they are put on, the type of products that are advertised around it and the variations within the show. Some things are broad because they aren't aimed at the lower common denominators, the show needs the market to exist. Ratings govern that. It happens, but I don't have to like it or keep silent about it.
