arabic is spoken is all of iraq but is spoken less in kurdish iraq because in kurdish iraq, they speak KURDISH. In afghanistan they speak more farsi (its not persian) than arabic. Urdu is spoken more in pakistan.

Urdu is spoken in Pakistan and Farsi is spoken in Iran and spoken in Afghanistan by some. But Dari and Pashto are the most common. Others like Hazara and Kyrgeze are spoken by a minority.

the base of afghani or pashto goes back to more than thousands of years and it is among only some languages still alive that were spoken by the Hephalites, Khushans etc. Als what we call Tajiks today were speaking Bactrian languages then and share ethnically the same origin with the afghans. Around 700 AD, after the Kushano-Hephtalites were defeated by the Arabs, they became perso-arabised forcibly in order to disroot the permanent uprisings and opposition to Persians once for all.

In Afghanistan Pashto is spoken in the South, Dari is spoken in the North. In the big cities most people speak both. Urdu is spoken in Pakistan and Farsi is spoken in Iran and spoken in Afghanistan by some. But Dari and Pashto are the most common. Others like Hazara and Kyrgeze are spoken by a minority.

Not to mention that the military's translators are mostly drawn from the local population, so they are obviously not being deployed elsewhere. There is no shortage of "Pushtun language speakers" in the "Pushtun" areas of Afghanistan. (It's actually called Pashto but he said it wrong.)

Oh goodness, you left out the rest of what he said which was, "They obviously don't speak Arabic, but the various dialects that they speak in Afghanistan". Your reaching for the stars to find fault in what the man said. I can understand if he said "They speak Arabic in Afghanistan" but he didn't. Oh well, Obama will never be acceptable to some people, but life goes on.

Are you completely unable to understand what he's saying? The context of these comments is that he's criticizing the war in Iraq because it supposedly draws critical resources away from Afghanistan. He was *about* to say that Iraq is taking up all our Arabic translators, but he caught himself just in time. Then he made some irrelevant comments about other types of translators that was a complete nonsequitur with the rest of his speech.
