Thank you for this. Thank you not for the choice of song, nor the elegance in your composure. Thank you for keeping something so obscure and wonderful as the theremin alive. By the end of my life, things like this will be dead and forgotten.
I think the Beach Boys used the theremin in their music. Instrument goes back a bit. A band called Ulver used it on their fantastic Shadows of the Sun album too, very sad sounding. Great job dude,
@pineapplepeanuts The instrument used by the Beach Boys was in fact not a theremin, but a similarly-sounding instrument called the 'Tannerin'. The tannerin is played by moving a sliding bar along a variable resistor.
@tonderus8 It is because of the way the video is compressed. The kind of compression used does not produce good results for moving parts of the image (because it is haghly compressed). You see it just with the hands because it is the only thing that realy moves here.
its funny how....only the pixels are messed up where his hands are....and never anywhere else...like his face or whatever......it's like he's got the Devil's hand! RAWR!
@DarkJoker7 Yeah, one guy posted a vid on YT on a tutorial for a theramin. He said that vibrato sounds much better. WHUT?! No, it makes the song worst. In my opinion, this instrument is like a violin or hi-piched cello. Try wobbling a bow on a violin on purpose and see what your music director does to you.
Such a crazy instrument. It must be so hard at first keeping your hands still without pressing on strings or anything but you seem to have no trouble. I have just discovered that thing but right away I recall hearing that instrument being played on Whole Lotta Love before the solo.
@hemet92544 Jimmy Page sucks at theremin. All he does is wave his hands in a random fashion while Randy (the dude in the video) actually plays a song. Now go troll somewhere else.
Beautiful, this is my favorite theme from all the FF games, i would go to sleep humming this and the song of spira when i was playing it, absolutely amazing.
I've watched you play, and I've watched a child try to play it... I want to play it myself, but, I don't think I'll ever get to such beauty. Such shame and sadness.
i wonder who really disliked this i mean id personally want to meet them to see if they really missed the like button or if theyr just fucktards who appreciate nothing in life
@darkdudironaji some people when they play, don't move their hands, but more their fingers, and since he was articulating the notes quite well, I would think that it would require some jerky movements to separate the notes so that the notes don't run all together.
The original normally gets me (whoever composed it already manage to make it tear-jerking) and nothing really gets to me (as if people don't say that enough in this thread). This was that and then some. I commend you. Great work!
Dude thats awesome. How did you record The Thermin? i actually want to build/buy one but i don't have a clue which or how so can you fill me in? Is it possible to have one that you can have different sounds to it like a MIDI Thermin lol
wait a min.... doesn't it stand "Moog" on that instrument? in that case its not a theremin. This is a Moog synthesizer created originaly by Robert Moog.
This particular instrument is made by a Russian scientist named Léon Theremin (θɛrəmɪn) , 1919. 1920 he moved to USA & played in an orcestra. He returned to Sovjet (Russia) & died 1993.
There is also a documentary film made called "Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey"
the two silver bars are sensors, his left hand controls the volume and his right controls the pitch. it works by creating to radio signals, the distance from the source, the two bars, interferes with those signals, and the base translates that into sound.
@Snakemast345 the closer your hands are to the bar the larger in the interference is. so you create an algorithm that associates a tone (or a volume level in the case of his left hand) with the level of interference. the process of detecting the level of interference is the hard part but the value it spits out can be easily translated into a tone
@benthedragon You're on the right track, but not quite right. It actually has nothing to do with radio signals, the two bars act as plates of a capacitor, and his hands work as the other plates. By moving his hands closer or further away, it changes the capacitance of the circuit which then alters the frequency of internal oscillators. It's pretty much the same principle as what you said, but different inputs.

This is the first time i have ever heard and seen a theremin. I have to say it sounded so beautiful. At first i was confused but the sound of the theremin sounds as if it is one's voice and the sound of the piece played was enchanting.

I've only just started browsing thereminist videos tonight but you seem to have the most physical and emotional control of this sensitive instrument. Your pitch and vibrato are superb.
A theremin is an electronic instrument with two antennae that operate according to where your hands are in accordance to the specific antenna. Usually the right hand controls pitch, and left controls volume.
Well....I'd have to disagree when you say shape, because what people do with their hands is because of their muscle memory and it is much more effective to move a finger than to move your arm back and forth, It works strictly to the distance of where (how close) your hands are and objects around it.
Wow the song sounds really right on the Theremin! :D Thinking about it, I guess those kind of videogame songs go well with the instrument since they are kinda high-pitched, constant notes that flow one into another. Since the Theremin can't cut and jump to a note from another but must "slide" between tonalities with the changing movement of your hands.
..Oh well, I'm trying to explain what I'm thinking but I sure don't really know proper terms. I hope I'm still kinda making sense. XD Good job!
dude.... When I read the title of this video I immediately thought "OMG this song is runied" but then the vid played and I felt like a douche. This is a really beautiful cover.
So, every single sound is produced by the theremin ? or it's like an electronic piano where it just produce loops and beats automatically (I hope you understand what I mean) ?
Only the constant sound is generated by the theremin. There's a keyboard track, but on a theremin the left antenna controls volume and the right (vertical) one controls the pitch. Great instrument and really simple to build from scratch at home.
I must admit. I'm impresssed. I've never seen a Theremin before. I've been playing music for a while and I want to learn to play one of these sometime. Keep up the good work. Do you happen to take any requests?
There are two antennas, one vertical and one horizontal. The pitch is determined by your hand's proximity to the vertical antenna. The closer your hand, the higher the pitch. The volume is determined by your other hand's proximity to the horizontal antenna. It's extremely hard to play it as well as he does in this vid, but it looks and sounds absolutely magical!
Listen to my story. This may be our last chance.

What IS theremin, exactly? Like how does it work?
pokemoneinstein 2 years ago
There are two antennas, one vertical and one horizontal. The pitch is determined by your hand's proximity to the vertical antenna. The closer your hand, the higher the pitch. The volume is determined by your other hand's proximity to the horizontal antenna. It's extremely hard to play it as well as he does in this vid, but it looks and sounds absolutely magical!
dbtad 2 years ago 3
That's so amazing. I wonder how it detects the hands.
pokemoneinstein 2 years ago
It has to do with capacitance. Your hand and the rods/antennas, together act as a capactor. Electral circuitry finishes the job.
