  • What's this on the nutnfancy likability scale?

  • why the hell am i lead to this when i search "adventure time "knife in your neck"

  • Nutn! What's the likability for this?

  • is this concealable for self defense or is it just too large? thanks!

  • @TheLove7391 you could eaily conceal this. It may take some getting used to, but it's very possible.

  • Thoughts on the RAT 5? Thinking of picking one up.

  • Rat-2 is alright.

  • hey nutn i just got a quesstion for you. i have some experience with knives and have been handelling/collecting for a few years (gerber, sog, remmington, crkt, kershaw) i now work with loading/unloading trucks and warehouses and need a knife thats more heavy duty, but i can also carry for edc since im a firefighter too. im faced with so many options and have no clue what to get or where to start. do u think you can help me? thanks alot -John

  • @ozzyfreak994 dont use your personal knife for your job. dont they buy you box knives? uses their razor blade knives so you dont ruin your blade

  • where do you get those knives at?

  • Do you remember the site were you got the all black version? I can't seem to find it on eBay and other sites that sell rat 3s. Thanks

  • The new RAT 3 is 1095, 56~58, and very heavy duty.

  • "Modified drop point?" Modified how??

  • RAT-3 is a great hunting knife. Mine is a plain edge 1095 carbon steel blade version, olive colored micarta handle. It's the ideal wilderness knife. I like the stout factory edge these things come with. Keep in mind that these knives are intended for heavy/rugged use and utilitarian cutting in the wilderness, not for shaving hair or delicately slicing tomatos, I kept a 23° angled bevel on my blades edge, it will slice with minimal effort. I don't want a thin edge, they don't hold up to hard use

  • Hey guys! Im looking for a small outdoor blade (fixed or folding) with a cutting edge under 3.5inches. Would this knife be good for that POU? if not, what other knives should i look at? Thanks a lot in advance for the advice!!!!!!

  • @TheTobyKing

I'm just using it for that purpose since more than a year now. If you like the knife, go for it! The blade is strong enough for whatever task you'll have to manage in the average outdoor day. I personally recommend to buy a teklok, 'cause I broke the normal clip quite fast. But I love the knife and wouldn't give it away anymore.

    Best regards from switzerland

  • @Hurzone Wait you live in Switzerland? So do i!! ok if it works for that ill see where i can get it!!

  • i cant find the rat web sight can you help and dont stop making the vids it helps sooo much

  • @DL9619 RAT changed their name to ESEE Knives.

  • @mongomondomongo True RAT Cutlery did change to ESEE. But the knives that are still being made by Ontario Knife Co carry the name RAT (Randall Adventure Trainig). Ontario still holds the rights to use the RAT designation and name. ESEE now uses the RC designation instead on their blades, and are made by Rowen.

  • wow 2008... Nutn you have gotten so much better at your reviews.

  • how boring can a video be XD lol.....

    come on make it funnier

  • whats the rating on this

  • what steel do you suggest buying this in, I was looking at D2 but was curious about the other steels

  • @TDONLEY91 Don't get it in D2, D2 is really brittle if you are going to cut things like aluminum and things that are kind of hard, or even if you do some woodwork it will chip on you.. Also it is a tool steel so it doesnt have the best corrosion resistance. Get the Rat Cutlery RC-3 MIL (ESEE Knives) it is pretty much the same thing but in 1095, it doesnt hold an edge as long as the D2 but it isn't brittle, and it better IMO...

  • @Tux3d0 D2 is mainly used for dies and stamps. A WWII era tool steel that only began being used for shear blades in the 1970's, it's now common in knives. It's the most rust/stain resistant of the carbon steels. But in my opinion 1095 carbon steel is a tough steel with pretty good edge holding abilities when heat treated correctly. 1095 steel has been used on US military bladed weapon since at least WWI. Seems to have performed perfectly fine through the rigors of war on many battlefields.

  • the knife's serations are on the wrong side for right handed people. how stupid.

  • What is the difference between the RAT-3, Ontario RAT-3, and the ESEE 3?

  • @SNAFU111999 nothing. rat was just rebranded and is now called esee. same knife, for all i know atleast.

  • Just got myself one of these. A terrific little knife, mine came with boot clip and TecLok which was cool. The sheath is excellent, holds the knife firmly and is able to be set up to suit left or right handed users. I fitted a lanyard (thanks for the lanyard vid Cutlerylover) to give me a little more "handle." Rigged the TecLok for horizontal belt carry and now have a very easy to carry lightwight fixed blade. Thanks for the review nutnfancy.

  • Thank you for posting this, and all of your videos... You do this with no incentive other than to help others, and we watch it for free, so on behalf of all of those you have helped, thank you. Now, to the people who find it necessary to talk shit to someone like you... FUCK OFF!

    Have a wonderful day.

  • what is edc ?

  • @shittyfuck Every Day Cuting - :D

  • @shittyfuck every day cary

  • @shittyfuck every day carry........like the way u carry ur phone everyday its somthing u dont leave the house without

  • @army66611123 can u bring a blade(or gun) to the street or market in US ? coz my country cannot.

  • @shittyfuck hey hate im base in the uk so i have to becarefull with my EDC because the cops here are anal and i dont know u have to cheak the laws in ur state but if u wanna carry a gun u will need a conceal carry permit....and for a knife welll i think a good folding blade would be good

me personly when i was in thailand would carry a fixed blade knife

  • hey nutnfancy have you heard of the scrapyard knife company ? most of there knives are made of sr-77 steel

  • mine is in the mail

  • dude i could use a kitchen knife as a EDC and tactical knife and everything knife

    hahhahahahahhahaha wow

  • @KiiNgofTheCastle

Shove a kitchen knife in your pocket. Do it real hard.

  • can u shoot that blade?

  • hey nutnfancy i'm a marine going to iraq and i want a small boot knife or ankle knife and i was comparing a rat rc4 and a rat rc-3 or a rat 3. since you have handled them which do you think would fill the role well? by the way i watched your karh pm9, and sig p238 reviews and bought them both and love them great vids, thanks

  • thats not the ontario rat. its the esee rat, samish design, but different

  • @miquerto they used to be the ontario rat. then they changed it to esee.

  • @TheJoshy1992 I concede that it might be an older model Ontario. was thrown by the R.A.T. logo. the Ontario version was in fact designed by the company Randals Adventure & Training (R.A.T.) they are seperate companies. R.A.T. is the company that changed their name to ESEE. Ontario is still Ontario.

  • @miquerto That is an older Ontario rat knife. You can't buy them new anymore because rat became Esse.

As far as I know at least

  • can you shoot that knife

  • Ok thanks

  • Why don't you do EDC videos is it just not your thing? What's up you do edc reviews.

  • @11ineedaname He's already got a couple out. -- Veri

  • @nutnfancy lol only a couple :)

  • @nutnfancy where can i get this other than cabelas?

  • @nutnfancy why doesn't nutn do the comments himself?

  • @ToxicLegend1 A lot of the comments are repetitive... -- Veri

  • i think i have an obsession with knives, who do i see about that?

  • @samyboi93 I think Nutnfancy is the person to see but it might make your obsession worse.

  • Like the Vid alot. What do you think about the Tops Wolf Pup?

  • kind of long winded but informative...

  • can you reverse the pocket clip panel?

  • I LOOK UP TO U

  • here in the netherlands the rat-3 D2 goes for about 150 euro's.

    kinda expensive.

  • Actually, nevermind, I just saw you have a review of the RAT Cutlery original also.

  • I thought there was something off about the sheaths in the beginning - then I heard you mentioned Ontario.

Why not buy the original RAT RC-3 (now ESEE-3) rather than the knockoff? It's not particularly expensive.

  • At this size, what are the difference between the folding knife and fixed blade ? I know Folding knife is weaker.... but size wise, I think its about the same as folding knife?

  • i like it. my friend got one with a black blade and coyote brown sheath and handle. good coloration for where i live at.

  • puto

  • What do you think of a SOG Tom Cat 3.0

  • Jungle training in the Amazon, in Peru. There is heavy woodlands survival training in Ft. Payne, Alabama. The basic woodlands course is $800.00.

  • can i carry this knife on my waist band hidden? in california?

  • yes you can, until you get caught haha

  • no. not concealed. but openly yes, barring local restrictions.

  • Buy real Randall's Adventure & Training knives, they're superior.

  • Good point for the masses. R.A.T. dropped the contract with Ontario because of poor quality. Get the real RC-3, or the new RC-5 survival. Another tough hombre is Bark River's Bravo 1 and Gunny.

  • Screw your Bravo 1 and RC-3. Get a Busse!

  • Sure tough guy, I'll run right out and get one. Just what I need, a big, heavy, and overly expensive Bushwacker, nearly $400; maybe I'll get some camo face paint too, so I can look like Rambo.

  • Busse makes smaller and lighter knives too.

  • why?

  • personally i carry a buck but these are nice knives!

  • learn to sharpen it, or use a single cut bastard file. it wont be all fancy and polished but it'll get through material quite well and be easy to sharpen and resharpen

  • My recommendation:

    Buy a tri-honing wet/mineral oil stone set.

    Buy Fine grit sharpening steel/ceramic.

Use roughest stone setting to re-profile the edge (carefully watch the edge geometry).

Use medium stone to fix bent or cracked edges (or use the roughest again if you know what you are doing).

Use finest only to get a decent bur when the sharpening stone does not do the trick.

Use sharpening stone for a minor honing (daily use, kinda).

  • Try A Spyderco sharpmaker If you want sharper you may need to take it to a place to get A better angle but it wont be as strong.

  • Buy a spyderco sharpmaker very simple anyone can use it.

  • Why is this blade $70? I just got an Ontario SP10 which is also 1095 steel and much, much larger and costs less. Is it just because this knife has a kydex sheath and micarta handle?

  • is it legal to carry this knife as an edc? or is it just legal for the hiking trips?

  • Nutn, just stumbled back across this vid, I've been doing Ranch work for the past three weeks in Colorado, I've been carryin the Cold Steel Roach Belly for my EDC blade, performs all my cutting tasks. FOR ABOUT 10 DOLLARS, and who cares if I ruin it, it was 10 bucks, I would buy a few if your looking for a razor sharp fixed blade EDC knife.

  • is That an ontario RAT not a Rat cutlery??

  • geek

  • Why are almost all of your videos 10 mins long?

  • He says why its cuz theres so much to talk about

  • no I mean that they are almost always exactly 10 mins long.

  • does anyone know what it means to "change the geometry" of a knife?....is it like changing the shape of the blade?

  • when he says geometry he changes the angle of the cutting edge. think of it as an acute angle that he makes more acute.

  • how do you change that?

  • You sharpen it. Making the primary bevel more shallow will improve the sharpness.

  • Comment removed

  • I think he meant that but with factors like symetry, Angles and things like that.

  • ziepit,

    Search for "Ontario RAT 3"

I just did and got plenty o' hits for <$100 Onatrio Rat 3 knives.

  • cutting things

  • im not trying to disrespect u but i havent found one under a hundred even on e-bay but we probly bought at very different times

has anyone here got one for under $80 if so please tell where i really want it but 'im not willing to spend over $80 i'm to young

  • you're probably been searching for rc-3 or something.

they're on ebay right now for about $70 bin.

plus you can use 9% paypal cash back and eBay Bucks to get about 8 bucks off so it'll be around $62,

  • then what should i search for?

  • dude im 15 and i bought an lmf II asek... it was something i wanted and i scrounged up the money

  • You are sooo on the money. This turned out to be one of my all-time favorite knives to carry. I didn't see that coming ( I have a lot of knives) It is a go-to workhorse that I can't imagine being without at this point.. Great review.

  • Well said...Great coverage, I'll be looking at your other reviews, I can tell you know what your talking about.

  • where did you get it under $80??!?!?

  • I own all the good fixed blades, this is my fav EDC.

  • Just bought a 1095 version, can't wait to get it!

  • How do you figure these would fare as a boot blade?

  • whe do you find this

  • can you make tinder with this like with the rat 1

  • I like your videos. I would like to make a couple corrections though, please don't take it the wrong way I'm not trying to act like a know it all, Busse is pronounced BUS-SEE and the re-geometrying the edge is called re-beveling the edge, keep up the good work you know more than 90% of these knife guys on here!

  • where did you find a RAT3 for under or around 80 dollars?

  • ebay

  • @shaokem

    Ebay

  • I hate the ricasso on that knife.

  • Love your reviews. I would like to see you review a Blade-tech folder.

  • I love all the videos! LOL you must have a million knives.

  • watch his video on storage. you see alot of em

  • #1 Normally the only knife that I carry for everyday use is a Spyderco LUM folder. It is a very good knife for most of my everyday needs. I do carry a small straight blade knife with a three inch long blade sometimes in a kydes sheath that is carried cross ways on my belt. When I am in the country I carry a custom machete made by a make in Arkansas of the USA.

  • #2 Very often when I am in the country I also carry a bigger knife on my belt. It has a blade about 5 inches long and it is made from carbon steel. You need carbon steel to start fires in a survival situation, stainless will not do. I do like the d2 steel, and is not brittle when done correctly.

I do not care about rust, I take care of my knifes. excuse my english please.

  • you dont need carbon steel. i recomend it, but its not needed.

  • or you could learn how to effectively light fires by friction haha. besides if you carry a firesteel, you can use carbon or stainless so i dont see what your point is.

  • I would carry anything but a RAT or a Ontario. RAT talks a big game also for what they are. If you think this is a good knife yu have never had a good knife.

  • Hi GCRU486,

What knives are on top of your list?

    Best regards

  • Anyone experience with the Extrema Ratio T3000C?

I have never seen it in real life but on pictures, i realy like it. It looks like it could have much EDC capacities. Not to mention Extrema's incerible Italian design!

    Thank you for your input.

  • could u pls tell me which is better rat 3 or fallkniven f1 for the use in the woods cheers

  • Hello wills400,

I have both but largely prefer the Fallkniven F1 because stainless, convex edge and much easier to maintain due to full wraparound handle as opposed to screw mounted micarta under wich moist WILL get trapped, so you need to remove the handle from time to time to clean/dry. Also edge retention is way better than the Rat-3 D2 witch i had until it broke to pieces during resharpening. Yes, D2 is brittle. The F1 can take more than a pounding.Full flat ground to!

  • thank u 1iron66 take ur comments into account when i pick one thanks again

  • I totally agree with you.and the wrap around handle(hidden tang) not only protects the tang against rust ,it also is more comfortable in the hand when it is freezing cold outside.the Kraton has it's advantages.but did't know that D2 is THAT brittle though.I have a Kabar D2 steel..(also Kabar's in 1095)

  • The F1 polymer handele is also more gripping, specially in wet conditions.

D2 beeing brittle is a known fact but in the case of my rat 3 i wonder if it is not due to bad heat treatement(?) One thing is for shure , if ever i buy a new one it will be a 1095. Never had problems with that steel. The thing i like most about rat/rc3 is the sheat. Easy to clip on/off the belt. Never had problems with stainless and fact is, it maintains lot easier.F1 is also a much thiker/stronger blade.

  • F1 also has a convex edge and in my experience, is he best edge there is. Very sharp and stays sharp for longer period than bevel edge blades. Sog used to have convex edges to but sadly they don't make them anymore. Probably because more difficult to make and thus more expencive.

Also in my opinion, blade shape and size of a F1 are near perfect for EDC witch is my priority.

  • what's EDC?

  • is it every day carry?

  • Indeed, EDC means every day carry.

1095 will rust when not taken propper care. When i carry/use an carbon blade, i ALWAYS also carry a Sentry Marine Tuff cloth to clean and protect the blade from rusting.

In my experience, there is little or no difference between strenght and edge retention between a good stainless blade and a carbonblade, espessially with very high quality laminated stainless like Fällkniven makes. A1 is a bit big for EDC and outdoors i would prefer the larger A2

  • Fällkniven is high quality stainless steel.I know that tuff cloth.think it is very chemical and not healthy to use when cutting your 'dinner'.I stick to olive oil :-P

  • I knew D2 is more brittle, but not "THAT" brittle.1095 rusts easily,so you should have to take more care of the blade.I hade a

A1 Fällkniven.tough knife.good at hacking wood too.nothing wrong with stainless steel.especially in watery environments as here in Holland.the F1 handle is indeed better gripping

  • I used my Rat 3 D2 only for very light work like cutting food on a cutting board so it neveer tok a blow, nor fell, it didn't even have a scratch but when time came to rescharpen(i mainly se Spyderco Tri-angel system) the blade just litterally fell appart in 3 pieces. This was the only D2 blade i had and after this it will also be my last. 1095 is ok but if i can have a knife in high quality stainless, i will go for that one. Many high grade knifemakers like RANDALL also use Stainless(440c).

  • damn it just broke in 3 pieces?but the Kabar D2 steel took some heavy blows by mister Noss .that blade didn't broke so easily.440C is very good quality.Entrek uses that steel.Boker valkyrie is like that too I think.

  • Yes, it just fell apart during sharpening while it had never seen even remotly hard use. Still like the sheat tough!

Didn't know that about the Tuff cloth! Works great protecting against rust but beeing unhealty certainly is worth considering other options. Thanks for the olive oil tip!

I have an Entrek Badger. Very nice"semi-custom". Never had any problems with 440C. I would rate it perfect if it had a full flat ground edge.A little heavy for edc to. Have a look at Fällkinven WM1! Very EDC

  • I'm not 100% sure about the danger of Tuff clot and cutting meat/food.but it comes oer as very chemical.and olive oil is VERY healthy so :-)flat ground is maybe better yes.

and the WM1 is a tough little sucker to havein your pocket .you got that right too.

  • the Entrek Javelina is a nice allround utility blade too.if you go into the Bush(not G.W) ,the Bison/Buffalo/Elk are nice options.I did have the Entrek Merc bout found it a little heavy and awkward in hand for a combat knife.

  • it's a matter of taste also(if not for most) which knife you like most.

  • That's right, colors and tastes are amongst the most personal things in humanity. Entrek Javalina is high on my list and so is the Jag and the cobra/companion. However, i am not very fond of the larger Entreks.

One thing about Rat/Rc 3 i like next to the sheat is they are very flat and thus easy to conceal an comfortable to carry. Therefore, sooner or later i will probably buy a Rc-3 in 1095. Flat ground makes a better slicer. Entrek style ground make the entire blade very strong trough mass.

  • your main preferences seem to be into EDC knives ,am I right or am I right? :-P(those ARE the knives that are always there when you need one).

  • Yes, EDC is my priority, mostly i could do with a good folder and i have quiet some of those but i like the immediate readyness off concealed carryable fixed blades.

In my opinion it is better to have a small knife when you need it than to have a big blade but not having it available when you need it because you can't carry it with you at all times.

I use my knives for anything from open up boxes to cutting rope to cutting food to fishing so a not to large fixed is ideal for my use.

  • for most jobs small knives are indeed best.and you can handle tasks with some difficulty, that bigger knives normally are better suited for, too.I always carry a small folder.its perfect for most tasks

  • Hi Renato555,

What are your favorite pocket knives?

As a knifenut, i usually carry a small to medium folder, the small in my pocket, the medium in a pouch on my belt and often(as much as possible) i replace the medium with a small fixed blade for the reasons i mentioned before, nl. Practicality in use, no need to draw and open the blade just draw.

  • at the moment I got a Byrd crow in my jacket. I have a byrd raven too, both black.but the raven is big for for daily carry i think.

  • in the backpocket of my jeans next to my wallet I got a very small 6 euro knife blade 6cm ,a longhorn.folders.small knives cut more than many people tend to think

  • in the small front pocket of the jeans I wear a mini laguiole.same size as the byrd.I used it on many occasions,I always tell people that I took it away from a dwarf who threatened me with it

  • those little guys can be very scary you know(think of the leprechaun)

  • My favotite for pocket carry is a Böker CLB Subcom Warncliff. Small, flat, and a very

    good slicer Great gripping To.

A small modification i did is to remove the plastic thumbstuds because they get cought by the pocket whem you pull it out and sometimes it gets in the way when cutting. After removal You get a small hole, somewhat like a

spyderco/Byrd , easy to openen one handed and the mentioned disadvantages are gone.

  • your Böker looks like a solid little companion.nice knife

  • my Entrek Merc was a poor slicer.thinner blades are also better slicers (like flat ground) than thick blades like Entrek and Tops,in my experience.but for hacking wood it's different.

  • a reaction by timothy milam:I have a Entrek "Bison" and a "Ranger" knife. Both are top quality knives. Of my collection of 30 plus hunting/survival knives I use these the most because of their ruggedness and heft. I have chopped trees more than 4 inches and used the knives as wedges driven with camp axe through logs to make kindling. I have KaBar, Cold Steel, Smith & Wesson, Buck, Benchmade, Gerber, and others. Entrek has been the most durable and useful for me.

  • also:These knives take brutal punishment and hold an edge as good as any I have ever seen

  • Indeed, my Entrek Badger is a strong litlle knife, look and feels like it could stop a tank in it's tracks. Deffinetly very strong, not to mention it's very nice semi custom look and super high overall quality. Yes, i am a Entrek fan as wel as a Fallkniven fan amongst others.

Edge holding on high quality stainless blades is in my experience as good as on most carbon steels and offers easy maintenance.

  • you got a good taste :-)

  • Thank you, So do you, we seem to more or less like the same knives.

As stated, taste is a very personal matter and anyones taste is the best for him/her.

Still no one with Extrema Ratio T3000C experience?

  • Hello Nutnfancy,

I had a Rat 3 in D2 steel for about 2 years. Used it only sparingly to peal an apple. Finally i resharpened it with a Spyderco medium ceramic rod. During this, the first 3 cm of the point and a second part from the edge, about 1cm tall running to the handle just came of. No more D2 for me. I replaced it with a ENTREK BADGER. Man, that's an EDC knife! Ok, it's heavier but it plays in a whole different category for a comparable price(80$). Check them out! Keep up the good work!

  • fags i can say what i want to say if you dont like it suck my nuts bitches

  • You want us to suck your nuts and you call US fags? Okaayy....

  • a philippine guy on the internet asking me if he could suck my testicles.I declined the offer.if it was a phillipinegirl it would have been different .

  • Um... thanks for the info?

What the hell are you supposed to say to that?

  • i thought it was humor.noting else.don't worry.

  • I've seen these knives in all combinations of steel, coating color, serrations, and sheath color for about $60.

  • i think this looks like a great knife! how much does it cost

  • Rats cost like $20-30 more than an ontario, plus I like the ontario logo more then the rat knife logo.

  • Ontario used D2 steel and the cuterly ones use 1095 carbon so thats the difference.

  • No, Ontario gives you a choice of either D2 or 1095.

  • Learn fucking English.
