Oh what a blessing this is. Hard work and a dream. Tha t IS America. the OWS is a socialist agenda wraped in nazi/communist blatherings in a time journailists are trying to tar and fearther a graduate of morehouse, wilth 12 year old sexuallies. God bless this family and families like them who know how hard one must work and sacrifice but the American Dream though fading is still alive.
@CKinfidel You've got a point. Maybe if George W. Bush had grown up in a shack in the Mississippi Delta instead of having trust funds and legacy admissions to Yale and Harvard handed to him, he might have amounted to something more than a drunken frat boy and the Worst President Ever.
@phantomsuccour -- I do indeed hold two of the more than 37 degrees represented. However, most important to me is the legacy of faith that my grandparents instilled in us. Without God and His Son Jesus Christ, all those other things mean nothing to me. Thank you all for the kind comments and support of our family.
what an inspirational family! they are the model that more families (mine included!) should strive to emulate! i'm speaking to myself here, too, when i say that as the years progress, we are raising children to be self-centered, materialistic & shortsighted.
few of us truly even know the meaning of hard times, lack, struggle & through it all, how to come together as a family unit to do what the Chandler family has done so magnificantly -- persevere!
@phantomsuccour -- SO true! no coincidence that ALL NINE children went to & graduated from college - many of them elite institutions!!
but in addition to a college education, mr. & mrs. chandler, amazingly, educated their children in love, perseverance & faith -- a lesson that seems to have gotten lost in today's generation!
I have always felt that certain films and stories were integral to advancing the Civil Rights movement into areas where segregation and bigotry were the norm." To Kill a Mockingbird " and " Lilies of the Field" are examples of great films and Kuralt`s story on the inspirational Chandler family was seen by untold millions and talked about by more. This story helped pave the way for the Huxtables on television which helped pave the way for the Obamas in the White House.
what an increible story. i just watched a 2009 update on this family...37 grandchildren...more than 37 college degrees! hard work and diligence begats even more accomplishments.
This story first aired Thanksgiving Day 1978. I was a young reporter in Nebraska and saw it on the CBS Evening News broadcast that night. It was then and I beleive still remains, one of the finest broadcast news pieces ever. It shows the potential (lost unfortunately now) of television to share stories of real people and through them, to learn about each other.
When I was younger was a sin to miss Charlie on the CBS evening news everynite was a new story for hope. I miss you Charlie as long as you are remembered you never die and your stories meant a lot to me and you never knew it.
Maybe THIS is what America is REALLY all about.... (says a Scotsman who is so impressed with this amazing family). How lucky they are to have each other. Fantastic story. Thanks
Thanks to whomever posted this. I was a broadcast journalist for 22 years and I had an opportunity to meet Kuralt. I can say without eqivocation, this is one of the finest reports by one of the finest reporters ever to work in broadcasting. If you're involved in this industry, soak this story in. It's not only a great story...but it's a great telling. Thanks again.
Why don't the Travel Channel start airing on the road once again.BTW look at all that Mouth watering food now that's a meal nothing like good ole home cooking.
I must say that I am proud to say that I'm a descendent of the Chandlers. This is definitely a testament that there is no excuse not to work hard to achieve dreams.
Leave it to the exquisite and incomparable Charles Kuralt to bring such a heart warming, truly American success story to such vivid life and light. I'm so touched. This one goes to my favorites.
BRAVO!! I'm so happy to see that others remember the great Kuralt and the body of work he gave us. Thank you so much for posting these stories so that others can enjoy and appreciate him too.
This had to be amongst the most memorable of Kuralt's stories for me recorded later in one of his books. I've thought of it often in dealing with my own family. Yet it never seemed I'd actually get to see the video. There does not seem to be many of us who appreciate these types of posts, but I'm sure they will be remembered much longer than cats taking dumps and such. Thanks so much.
Charles Kuralt is awesome. What a loss to television and to the human spirit without him. Never met him or knew him, but I miss him so much. Thanks for sharing this!

the impossible becomes possible; I can think of a few families where that did not happen.

This is among Kuralt's finest features and instills the kind of confidence you need to have in America when we mistake our government for our people.

These were/are extraordinary people. One of the reason President Obama could even consider running for presidency.

Is the patriarch Mr Chandler still alive?
OldMrMemories 2 years ago
Alex Chandler is my grandfather. Both he and my grandmother passed away several years ago.
