Very cool! I have wanted to know how to play this haunting song for years! I now know how to play it thanks to you and your video! Keep rocking man it sounds great :)
On the Tribute to Bill Monroe DVD which was done the year after he passed in '97, Butch Baldassari, talks about how he wanted to get the call to play this song at the show. He talks about the song, and goes through a couple of the passages. So I've been on a hunt now to find the tuning, because Butch doesn't divulge it, trade secret it seems. I googled and found your video. Man, you are playin the *&%$ out of it. It sounds really good. Thanks for sharing your gift, and thanks for the tuning!!!!
Butch was an amazing player! Sure wish he was still with us! :( I learned it from Sam Bush's transcription on the Homespun Bill Monroe DVD Vol 2. He lets the cat out of the bag as far as the tuning goes on that video. Thanks for the kind comments! It is a wonderful tune that all mandolinists should take a crack at! Good luck!
Very very pleasing to my ears that weber is one of the best sounding mandos on youtube. I dont know if ole bill would be proud or just mad because you nailed that tune probably a little cleaner than monroe himself.Great job.
Thanks! That is definately Bill at his best! Me too I'm afraid! :) The mandolin is a Weber Fern and it is one of the finest mandolins I have ever heard or played. Thanks for noticeing!
Did you ever hear the story about how Bill composed that? He was home alone one cold day at his farm kind of "between" girl friends, sitting in the dark and he started picking on his famous 1923 Gibson F5 Loar and one of courses was not tuned -- that discord caused him to stumble on to this tune which he did not release or record until many years later - near the end of his life (on earth). You did GREAT!
Thanks! I had not heard that story. Bill was so cool in that had such a tough exterior and was capable of so much depth. Rare thing. I am tuned AA DD AC DF. The "C" note is a stretch for heavy strings. The BUSH strings really work for this tuning as they have the 14 instead of the 15s for the A strings. Learned it from The Monroe Homespun Videos. Thanks again Bernie!!
And I forgot to add that the filming has become real "pro-like" on your vids -- the scenes featuring shots of the mountains, fireplace, and pictures on the wall add a lot of dimension. My compliments to you and your "team of producers"! (<:
