Each of my favourites in verbal and visual poets make one of the best video/music compilations of the urban hate/love concept I've ever seen. thank you all!!
What do mean when you say, "I don't get it."? What are you expecting to get? There is no narrative, no story.
What do you feel, might be a better question to ask. Does make the music feel different to you? If not that's ok. BUT I do not think pieces like this are about getting it, as in understanding what he is saying or showing, but experiencing it. Sounds cheesy and a bit wanky, I know, but it seems to work for me.
this was the first thing he played at his round house gig the other night. was hugely powerful on three huge screens and a very loud system. very atmospheric and an amazing opening piece to what can only be described as an amazing, mind bending and unique gig. cunnigham is a genious.
@jamesmitchellesquire yep.. very haunting... one of the strangest things ive ever seen on stage and one of the best also. what an expierence that night was!

i didn't get it... can somebody anybody explain? really, i mean in a totally open and heart felt way. non troll! but why is this so good? why is this art???
@MsBickle76@Devilsblood That's hard to explain. Art is something that take us to a higher state. It's all about feeling good, being amazed with it. Just read the previous comments and you'll undertand what I mean. However, what is good for me may not be good for you... Wish you could feel this way watching this great video.
@thgbyo i just don't get it... but i like him! Chris Cunningham is fucking amazing! i love him! but i just don't understand what is so good or compelling about this... why 3 screens though? 127 hours did something similar with 3 screens at the same time. very interesting.

@MsBickle76 I'm not saying whether this is art or not, to me it's a music video. But probably the best one I have ever seen. Look at the perfect fusion of image and sound. It is as if the the image plays the music, and vice versa. I am sure you can see that the video is created out of samples that are arranged in similar way as is music. This creates an almost hypnotizing mood ... dark, cold, repetitive, mechanized, disturbing. And then the beautiful & warm voice in contrast. Simple & powerful

@MsBickle76 All I can tell you is personally for me it simply looks good and sounds good. Which is what art (be it music or film or images) should do. I guess people who like pop music and videos feel the same way about that, but i like this, nothing more nothing less.
@MsBickle76 -it's academic question which doesn't fit here. It's like David Lynch movies. I can't describe what I feel when I watch them with words, I just know I'm overwhelmed with the atmosphere and have keep watching with no reason.
I would say that thgbyo explained it in a good way: it is something what takes you to higher state.
State or place where I feel that everything is happening for a reason and I'm connected to everything around me. This brings me feel of calmness, harmony and self-balance. Why? My guess is that this is what awaits us after death, but sometimes you can reach this state even during your life. It is just matter of your nature how much you can feel it with intensity, how often and how long...
@MsBickle76 Try to watch it at night with headphones, in full screen, and in the darkness of your room. Try to get lost in it and try to feel what Gil Scott is telling to you. Not always art can be understood in the morning, or on the white background of Youtube. After you tried that, let me know if something changed
@MsBickle76 totally understand where you are coming from. Its like david Lynch films, I dont always know for sure whats going on, but sometimes I trust art just to make me feel a certain way. And if it makes me feel good it cant be bad right? sometimes that isnt about explanation, its about emotion. arty farty I know- but how else can we explain david lynch brother hahaha
@MsBickle76 i watched the "performance" on meltfestival 2010 - it was played as the last track, after all the "attack" stuff and the "disturbing" videos c.h. made. just goose bumps. you can't get the feeling for this by just watching a compressed video fullscreen at home. this was displayed on 3 huge(!) screens (mainstage).

@MsBickle76 I belive my friend, that the true question would be,¿What you consider art, or video art?. If you can awnswer to that question first, or give an example of any form art in video, i can asure you, that more than one person would be able to answer your question.
@MsBickle76 its amazing how people like you have the ability to write comments on videos like this, makes me reconsider my zombie Apocalypse survival plan.

I mean, its a stupid opinion no doubt, and slightly rude. If she had even the slightest appreciation for film she might get it.... but its her right to have that opinion shared with others.
The light and dark was matched with surgical precision as is the motion in all three cameras. It's art because it took a lot of effort and everything had a purpose that may have gone over your head.
@angrytrollvids and I'd like to add... Cunningham might be our generations Kubrick, if the guy wasn't such an insane mess that only released videos every so often.
@angrytrollvids Normally people who have top comment get thumbs up and get funny comments back or something. I honestly tried to understand and ask people who feel strongly about this to help me practice seeing. Since i got sticked By the uploader I have had nothing but hate mail.
Not one person has PM me and honestly asked me for my opinions or a talk. Now i come back to see the video and my comment has been marked as "spam". If people's opinions are different it doesn't make them
It's just hard. the internet is snide, often. I responded aggressively but in all truth... that was my opinion.
His work is shocking, that isn't what makes it beautiful. The atmosphere of this video is darker than anything in Come to Daddy. He remixed the song, to match his visual style,
Watch the Social Network, and how well the visuals work with the Reznor score. Watch 2001: A Space Odyssey for atmosphere. Watch Terrence Malick. Explore ambiance.
@angrytrollvids I am a fan of David Fincher, so i did see The Social Network. Reznor's score was very well done. I get it. Chek the 3rd video on the "Suggested" section, see who uploaded it. I also has Reznor facebook music...
@MsBickle76 So I'm baffled. Maybe you just haven't let this sink in yet. Didn't you enjoy the choice to keep his face dark, only the sparse lighting? Does it seem like a guy down on his luck singing in the subway station? There's a lot of ambiguity here that is just begging to have your imagination fill in the blanks.
@MsBickle76 have you ever ridden the subway or lived in NY? it's dark, it's bleak, it's dirty, it's quiet. The only sounds come from grating steel and footsteps. there's nothing to look out to, just flashes of light as you pass from station to station. Some people never adjust to the crowds or the amounts of time traveling from one short distance to another. For some there's no charm to that hustle, just fatigue. I think the visuals depict that experience. Heron drives it home with his song
@SleeplessCiti Thats how I felt commuting home at nights on BART across the bay at like 10:30 PM. Felt like being lost in time. Indoor stations were white echoing tombs. Elevated stations were a platform with bright lights suspended in endless empty black.
Felt like you were in a place away from everything. Come loose, stepped into a wormhole, detached from time.
You can lose parts of yourself and never get them back.
"why is this art???" That's a big question. You can take years and years of schooling and read hundreds of books to try to answer that question. In my opinion, don't over think it. Art is simply any form of creative expression.
"but why is this so good?"
Art is only "good" if it means something to you. I consider this music video the best of the best. I get goosebumps every time I watch it. If you're not moved, then it's not good to you. As simple as that.
Why is it that this video can be so gritty and dark. I feel like when I hear this song, I'm isolated from the world and distant from everything thats living. Its a great video and well thought out.
I love how different all of Chris' projects are, I didn't expect anything like this after Rubber Johnny and his more recent videos; but this is something else. It's a shame this will probably be the only way I can watch the video, but I still felt as if I was there on the trains, becoming more lifeless as time dwindled by, it's a sad thing but also a relaxing and numb experience.
