I was a little confused but, what did Dennis steal from Mr. Wilson as he mentioned from 5:30-5:34? All Dennis did was call to Mr. Wilson that his gold was stolen. Did he think Dennis stole his gold? If he did, that shouldn't be a problem since Dennis was standing in front of him and Mr. Wilson could get his gold back then if he really thought Dennis stole it.

Exhibit A:the thief will hate kids from the end of DTM onward as does Freddy. Exhibit B:The blanket that sets the thief afire matches the color and pattern of Freddy's iconic sweater. Exhibit C:The actors look pretty similar considering the weight the thief would have lost in a jail cell. Exhibit D:The fire that burned the thief was oddly enough set when he was asleep.

My guess is that the reason why the thief knew they were books maybe because, he has seen a lot of safe's disguised as books which is why he was checking every row of book to see if it was a safe. Regarding the thief knowing the combination, maybe the safe was unlocked or, maybe the thief broke the safe open with his knife.

@afriendofbean I heard from someone else one time that in the book the thief did something like made and offer to Margaret,Something like if she told him the combination to Mr. Wilson's lock he would give her back her doll or something like that.Which I dont see how Margaret would know the combination to the lock,I dont see how anyone else could know about the combination to the lock except for Mr. Wilson.Unless of course they took a really good wild guess like Dennis did and tried that combo.

Or maybe (as you mentioned) the thief guessed the same thing Dennis did which was Mr. Wilson's address in order to get the combination number.
