I shed a few tears there at the end. This is my first time watching prisoner and so far I've watched Episodes 1 - 224 right here on YouTube and Vera Bennett was my favorite screw ever since I first saw her. I'm going to really really miss Vera. Wentworth just won't seem the same without her.
As a teenager I watched Prisoner every week. They used to show it on STV every Thursday night and I never missed an episode.
20 years later, my opinions on the characters have changed. I used to hate Vera as a kid but watching this now I think she was a great character and her put downs of the prisoners were amazing
Good bye, Vera. It's a shame you didn't get more resolution, or longer to grow out of your "They're animals" mentality on-screen, but you at least got what you wanted, ultimately.
Vera Bennett was an amazing character & Fiona Spence is a brilliant actress. My heart feels as though it's breaking knowing we shall never see Vera upon this screen again. My coworkers asked me if I really wanted to get home to see the final episode; they have been 'enlightened' about Fiona Spences acting abilities by now. Vera Bennett will be missed, Fiona Spence will be missed. However, time will not allow them to be forgotten, She has done an unforgetable body of work here. You were brilliant
It is not fair that Vera went, I know she was a pain at times, but she did have some very good dead pan humour and now we have that dreaded Ferguson to look forward to, the freak is not one of my favourite characters, I never liked JOan Ferguson, she went too far and ruined the show in my opinion, Vera was hard but she was no killer. xx

Powell can be a right 2 faced bitch when she wants to be. She is all nice to Vera's face but behind her back she rips her apart and then blatently raises her eyes when she makes a comment. People like that are real shits you never know where you stand with them. At least Vera is smart enough not to react or drop her guard. We all know the way Vera is but if anything she is honest. She will rip you apart to your face if she has a problem not slip behind your back hissing like a snake.
I liked Vera I'm really going to miss the character, I hate the way they made the women except Lizzie make fun of her. I might have felt a little more sympathetic to their party if they'd have really given her a hug. She really did care for Lizzie. Bye Vera You're going to be sorely missed ),:

I 1st started watching PCBH as a student & missed the Bennett years starting at the Fergusson reign. Re-watching from the beginning I get to see Vera's effect on the women from a different point-of-view, knowing just what they have in store in future episodes. Maggie Kirkpatrick does an equally superb job of keeping viewers glued to the screen and 'The Freak' is another favorite character of mine, she is however colder, meaner, more damaged and even more jaded than Vinegar. Partially she was given the writing she needed, but Fiona Spence played her to perfection with her little smirks and the way she would say just enough to mislead people--you could always tell what was going on in the character's head. And she was a force--I still remember thinking "Oh shit!" when Lynn Warner was made to smuggle something in and Vera came through the gate behind her. The End of an Era.
Prisoner had a very short run in Casper WY and I always thought to myself, why did they cancel this awesome show?? Thanks to GueenBea, I GET TO SEE what I missed and a big thanks go out to her.
As for Fiona/Vera, I can't add much more than what's already been said. Just an outstanding and most unforgettable performance that very very few can come close to matching.

I would had loven if they had left the role open for Fiona Spence to return. I the charcter much better than I did Joan "The Freak Ferguson". Joan's charcter was exciting as she took off where Vera left off. But much more extreme, evil. However after a few yrs The Freak for me just got boring. Her personal life was pretty much the same as Vera's. Lonely, but Vera had the side to her, where u can see my she is the way she is...Shame the 2 couldnt have met at some point.
Vera's Story is a Sad one as Meg said overbearing Mother, Doomed Relationships, the Light at the End of the Tunnel was the Governership at Barnhurst and even that came at price, it is understandable why Fiona Spence wanted to Leave, sometimes it's just too much to be playing a character like that, but she was good at it. Fiona/Vera Really Did set the Standard for authorative Women we see on tv now

How ungrateful to not even acknowledge that her colleagues were sincerely trying to do something nice for her! Its really a sad ending to see her character leave; she added so much to the show,,,but there's more on the horizon!
