  • Interesting, but I am not sure beauty culture should be the primary emphasis of vocational training for females unless there is little else open to them. If the organization is simply directed to create a class of self-employed entrepreneurs I abstain. What these countries need is an educated and literate working class that can make the changes and demands on the present institutions to force change.

  • Your observation is an interesting one. The reality is that these girls have already completed two years of vocational training (sponsored by AKIN) and they have chosen hairdressing as a vocation. We supported their choice once we learned that hairdressing is a viable profession -especially because most women in Kenya (even the poorest) do not wash and braid their own hair. Our 8 girls can look forward to self susatining lives in the future.
