I'm not a mega big fan of rally, so I dont know this so can some one tell me why does thees 2 finnish persons sitting in a car speaks english to each other? is that some kind of rule?

@x3mlee yeah, well... in a straight line they sure where much faster, but the stage times today are very similar or even faster then they where in the 80´s...

you cant deny that there have been huge improvements in the handling of the cars wich makes it possible to go faster today even with smaller and less powerful cars.. but yeah, i get your point.. they where more powerful and would likely outrun any rallycar today when it comes to straight line racing and acceleration..

@Skuggan84 Nice reply, you are 100% right. I agree with you, it´s not only about speed, modern rally cars are better in all terms... especially safety. Back in the 80´s they didn´t have even a fuell cell, Henri Toivonen and co-pilot died burnt alive upside down because of that...

I don't understand why people nowadays don't give credit to Seb Loeb! Have you seen him drive? Look at some onboard footage of Wales Rally GB 2010, for example. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of drivers like Kankunnen, Mäkinnen or McRae, but Loeb is a master!

I spoke to him at the start of the 1989 Pantperthog stage in the Dyfi Forrest near Machynlleth in the then Network Q RAC rally.

A decent bloke who was willing to talk even though he was concentrating hard for the next stage.

Oh fond memories when rallying was rallying and the RAC was a proper rally not like the joke its now become.

Juha Kankkunen will be competing in this years 1000 Lakes Rally. I think Rally Finland should still be called 1000 Lakes rally IMO. He will be driving a Focus WRC with Juha Repo as his co-driver. KKK will do some testing, to help prepare him to drive a modern WRCar. He is also aiming for a top 10 finish.

At the same time Tommi Mäkinen ruled the scene with a Group A Mitsubishi ;)

But the Escort was the only car with longitudal engine, others had transverse engine = not as good balance.

WRC regulations were made so that manufacturers wouldn`t need to build homologation specials like Escort Cosworth.

You could just simply add all the special parts in a normal, dull FWD mass production body.

Cossie was getting old by that time thats true. But it still wasn`t a crappy car.

But eighter it was not a winning rallies car...look at 1996-7 as Carlos Sainz had a lot of problems with failures and when he finaly won,he was nearly DQ because of car not in the rules....

Carlos Saiz didn`t win because they didn`t have any driver capable of developing the car. That`s why Kankkunen was hired in the first place to replace Thiry. Sainz was a quick driver if he had a quick car to drive, but poor at working with engineers to develop a car to become or stay quick.

There was several different things that ruined the Cossies years in WRC, but you get much better idea of the cars true capability if you look at how it did in different national championships.
