  • here comes all the politics...<_<

reminds me of the jaz age in the u.s.!!!

  • @mrmastermind29 I do, too. I really like Chinese classical as well, especially when played on the erhu. Very beautiful.

  • I only like Connee Boswell a little better than Zhou Xuan. Apart from Connee non can match her voice.

  • @MyPopiejopie I'd heard the Boswell Sisters but not just Connee. Thanks for letting me know about her! She's definitely one of the great singers, no doubt. Like Zhou Xuan she has a very unique, individual voice. Thanks again!

  • miss China, miss my homeland :(

  • @viskyakira I hope that you don't have to stay away from your homeland for too long. Best wishes.

  • no more voice like this any more

  • @edward3966 Yes, Zhou Xuan's voice is pure magic!

Maggie Cheung wore many Cheongsam dresses in the 2001 film In The Mood For Love, YT video number above.

  • @GoldenSilents Thanks for that link! The star in this video I made is Ruan Lingyu. Maggie Cheung played Ruan Lingyu in "Center Stage" in 1992. The movie is about Ruan Lingyu's tragic life. I haven't seen it yet but reviewers say it is an excellent movie.

  • @Jupitroid I know. I bought that film on DVD a few years back and watched it. Very good period piece.

  • In 1930's, mainland china is belong to the" Republic of China (Free China)"!!!

but after 1949, every thing in mainland of china is getting bad by communist party!

  • @bighth63354 so what? still nothing to do with taiwan

  • Heihei, you see not all "Made in China" are of bad quality. Just a joke.

  • @qilinmelb Haha! That's funny! It's too bad that what most Americans know about China is what they learned in WalMart. I wish they knew how great Chinese art is (like the singing of Zhou Xuan or the erhu playing of Yu Hongmei).

  • Can someone plz give me the lyrics??? Thanks

  • @TheDokaDoka Hi, the lyrics are in this video's description and also in the comments for this video (thanks to ascruffyandscentlade)

  • i loveeeeeeeee it ! thank you SO much

  • @uohecc You're welcome! Thank you! You totally rock! (^.^)

  • What are her best songs?

  • @yenerowna My other favorite by her is known as "Age of Bloom" (Hua Yang de Nian Hua. The ones that pop up when you type "Zhou Xuan" into YouTube search are excellent also. If anyone else has any other suggestions I'd like to hear them, too.

  • Beautiful video. A treasure. Thank you so much for posting.

  • @ylfriends Aww, you're welcome! And thank you so much for this wonderful comment! (^.^)

The wine and women are intoxicating and mesmerizing making it hard to leave and easy to indulge

Recklessly squandering their youth

Daybreak blurs the drowsy drunken eyes

Everyone starts to regain their wits, following the turning of the tyres

Everything changes up, it's a new world

There's a new environment

Thinking back on Night life

Waking up from the dream

  • @ascruffyandscentlade Thank you so much for that excellent translation! That is beautiful poetry. It fits the beautiful melody of this great song.

Shanghai Nights Shanghai Nights

You're a city that never sleeps

The pretty lights come on The music sounds

Singing and dancing in peace and harmony

One only sees her, smiling in welcome

Who could have known she was feeling dejected on the inside

Shanghai Nights It's all about

The clothes, the food, the board and the travel

  • Was this song played during Daniel Wu's Blood Brothers?

  • lovely voice,,brings back memories of my china

  • what instrument is that at the end?

  • @connorpadraig said: "what instrument is that at the end?"

Right at the end? I think it's a trumpet with a trumpet mute.

  • Great video

  • @usasians said "Great video"

    Thank you!

  • This is golden. Haha now I know what my grandparents and great grandparents grew up listening to ^_^

  • @pwkid said: "now I know what my grandparents and great grandparents grew up listening to ^_^"

It's good to know your own history, and nothing is more fun than learning it through music!

  • the woman in the video is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.

  • I have that same record !

  • nice one! I never knew so much about them both...What a tragic indeed..

I love Zhou Xuan's style of music...hehe..I heard other songs so I'm looking for her music compilation...only to buy a "pop" version yesterday... TT sad....

Thanks for doing and sharing this!

  • @femaki84 Thank you! The Shanghai Lounge Divas CDs 1 and 2 have a good selection of original Shanghai 1930s songs (along with a bunch of remixed crap).

And thanks for posting this video on your facebook. That was very cool!

  • So this is about a single mother getting all dolled up and trying to find a man to take care of her and her baby? Or is she a hooker? Im not sure i get it. Was the baby left alone all night?

  • She's working as a prostitute so she can feed her baby.

I cut out the part where she talks to her neighbor about taking care of the baby when she's gone. The song is only 3 minutes long so I did a lot of editing to make the video fit the music. I guess I made her look like a bad mom! Oops. Thanks for pointing that out.

  • @aj06bolt12r < No, it only showed the hard time in Shanghai of that era. The lady was providing sex service to earn the living and feed her child aftere worked through the night as a single mother.

  • The audio quality of this video is the best I've heard of this song 夜上海 by 周旋! Thank you!

  • You're welcome! Good audio quality is really important to me, too.

  • Ruan Lingyu was soooo beautiful :O

  • Yes. She is a tragic beauty.

  • Thank you! Yes, that is her. I really like Zhou Xuan's singing. I'm glad you like the video.

  • Good vedio and singing... Is she really 阮玲玉, one of the movie stars in Shanghai of the 1930s?
