The power button on mine is broke too, we have had it since before i was born (i'm 23 now) We press the volume up and down at the same time and it turns mine on and off.
this item was one of the true RCA well built stuff before this company fell in the hands of GE and sell it to the French Thompson and they fucked up the name buildin cheap shit unther RCA
I just made my own video recently about an old RCA TV with composite video input (e.g. a port currently used for DVD and gaming though DVD was after this TV); and I made a YouTube video about the TV because it was a big part of my childhood.
I also know that these TVs used to use Channel 91 as the method of accessing the input.
My father used to have a TV like that. The remote control had a red "off" button in the corner to turn the TV off. My mother told me that when I was between 1 and 2 years old, I pushed that button while it was sudden death in a golf tournament that my father was watching, and I almost regretted that decision.
OMG! Okay, I have the same television, and our Power button has been broken for over 15 years. Want to know what you need to do? Plug it in, and to turn it on, you need to push the two volume buttons down at the same time! OR, use a standard RCA remote. Now, this may or may not work for you, but we have the same situation. How ironic. lol.
Another thing, the remote uses a single J battery, something very ironic in most appliances. So we can't even use the TV remote since they don't sell J Batteries in stores. haha.
Decent tv. Had on til a few years ago when the tuner control module blew on it. Wasn't able to get it fixed so I trashed it. Must say the 1993 RCA I replaced it doesn't look or sound as great. This TV has great bass response. Hope you get it working.
I have this tv but the buttons I have look alitte newer. Someone was throwing it away so I picked it up and it did not power up but it made a high pitch sound when it was turned on. Mine is made in Aug 1986 and I spent alittle over $100 to get some small parts fixed in 2002 and it works great and has a very clear picture even while playing playstation 3 games.

It's been a while since I've last seen a size "J" battery in person as well but I recalled places like K-Mart and some drugstores sold them.
They are rectangular with a corner clipped off

@yuandrew Yeah, if I recall, they are used still in hospitals since they are flatter than regular AA batteries and such.
