I do this often, and my cat LOVES it! She must think it's like a rat's tail or a mouse or something. I never leave it alone with her in case she actually eats in and gets hairballs, but cats really do like these toys!

I could see the argument that the cat might end up ingesting part of the fur (which it would have, anyway, grooming, but that's beside the point), and that it might fall apart and make a mess. Maybe you could cut the toe off an old sock or stocking, and tie the hairball inside it?

@xxremix1 With ferals which were used to temp up to -34C one long haired, one medium length hair and one short now living happy indoor life, there are cat hair all over the house, just turning your back and what you cleaned is same as before, luckily worst shedding starts to be over and now there is two medium hair and one short hair. Great thing to do with cat hair, they instantly started to play with one I tossed to them.

I did this with my domestic short hair. She shedded SO much, and I figured, why not have fun with it? So I brushed her and got a lot of fur. I rolled the fur rod in cat nip and she went crazy. It was awesome :D
