Hey, is there a way to latch onto the sound without having an arpegiator? I want to have my hands free to do other things.. Is that possible? Can you also make a micro korg dubstep tutorial?
is it possible to make standard piano sounds on the microkorg? is this a patch i should try to make on my own, or is there a pre-set with a classic piano sound?
great video man, very creative stuff. I am very new to synthesizers. are you able to save your own programs on that thing? or do you only have the option to edit the presettings?? ive been watching alot of videos on the microkorg but none of the reviews say anything about making your own sounds and saving them. would it be possible to add another modular synth to that one that one for more options?
I'm new to the synthesizer's world and I don't know anything about them. Do you have to connect the microkorg to a computer or do you just need the microkorg to be able to play?
@rucas75 - You don't need a computer at all, another cool thing with the MicroKorg is that it has a handy battery compartment so you can go anywhere to Jam with it. I recommend long journeys in the car/train etc.. with a pair of headphones!
yeah but thats just using the effects dude, That kinda defeats the purpose of having the synth??? Like we all know about line/in. :-/ spose u had like $700 to spend but u coulda bought a full DAW if u just wanted effects... My 2c.
you have no idea how much this video has helped me since i watched it 2 years ago. i didnt even know that the korg did this when i bought it and i never read about it. without this video i would not have been able to make so much of the music that i have been making for the past few years.
Omigawd, listening to this is almost dizzying after a while. Especially after drinking a tall-boy... :) This thing's freakin' amazing though, seriously! I was just researching simple harware sequencers when I strumbled on this. Pretty slick!
Can anyone tell me if the MicroKorg can be tuned half a step? My band plays with all our instruments tuned half a step down and we need a small keyboard that can do the same.
So I just got a microkorg off ebay (sketchy move i guess) anyways I'm having trouble with the line in, I'm using a cable that I believe is an auxiliary cable (it's one that hooks into headphones with 3.5mm jack on both sides). Anyways when I do this and use my computer or ipod to play music into it, it doesn't work! The Audio In 2 light doesn't even aluminate! Please give me troubleshooting tips if you have any.
@TehChiken It ended up working, I just had to buy the right kind of aux cable. And when is buying off ebay not a sketchy move? Especially since the item's description was only a sentence.
Yeah, I don't see why not. Try it out, I have never used mine through one ( I generally have it directly through a set of active monitors or through a small mixer) but it would make sense to use a keyboard amp.
@misterbearmagicman You just need a set of active speakers (speakers with their own power supply), you can even run it through a guitar amp if you like but you won't get the stereo effects. A set of pc speakers should work.
Do you have any tutorials (or could you point me to any) on just building a synth instrument from scratch on the MicroKorg? I just got a MicroKorg XL, and the controls are different but the principles are the same.
@DanceFreakHannah - there is a rhythm present, i believe he was trying to feel it out. snapping your fingers and clapping (among other methods) are probably the best ways of doing that.
iv tried this, didnt work for me.. screwig as i was looking 4ward to it, but i notice u have a little green led lit where it says audio in under number 2, mines dosent light up!!

i perfectly followed your instructions and the sound came out when i held down a key, but when i set it to arpegaand turned on my arpeggiator no sound comes out ,turn off the arpeggiator and it works fineagain. any suggestions????
the mk has the most knobs of any keyboard-synth in it's price-range, so it's the best imo. it's really simple to get good patches going from scratch and the programming pretty much explains itself on the front so it's a good beginner synth. i mostly use mine to control my real synth (THA MOTHA FUCKIN MOPHO) but i still mess around on the mk from time to time. it's good for jamming. it just sucks that it's so widely used by every scene ass mother fucker modifying presets into ambient patches.
well dang, boy you just sold me! i was at the music store the other day looking for a new mixing console and seeing how much theyd give me for an old geetar, and i played with this thing AND I HAD TO GET ONE! ive seen them around for a while and knew they were hot, but never knew you could use as FX processor!! i'm selling an old video game system & games on ebay and hope to get close to $400 so i can get a microkorg ASAP.
when i found this out i almost shit myself i plugged in my ipod and it worked too it had alot of clipping though so my ipod didnt enjoy that i did that too much haha but hey apple sucks
hey ehm I got the microkorg a few days ago, and I know this is gonna sounds like a nooby question lol.. but like i'm just a bit apprehensive about fiddling around with all the edit sides in case they mess up the presets that you're given.. will this happen? :S
if you want to do IDM, experimental or 'beat' music like dub, house, Jungle etc, (Aphex Twin, Autechere, Prefuse 73) YES this is a good tutorial, otherwise, If your looking to write synth lead lines or create new patches, for music like MGMT, Numbers,The Faint, Ladytron, is not very useful... No one is spending 300 bucks just to make cool sounds! we're using this instrument to make MUSIC!
This tutorial helped me decide to buy a microKORG-- now I am huge fan of this machine. If you use last fm please join the fan group I made for it: "microKORG"-- it would be nice to see what sort of charts last fm will compile from fans of this synth.
Try learning how to use Audacity or Macaw, they're great - google them... they are Free and open source. You'll need to plug your KORG into whatever input device - sound card / console / interface / whatever = and record from there. Maybe even try getting a 1/4th converter plug
@Latenium yes you can you need a usb/audio cable like the one he has except instead of the headphone jack itll be usb. to record youll need software (garageband, ableton live, cubase, etc.)
This is surprisingly helpful, despite what it seems like at first
4:42 haha i like how he starts to bob his head to increasing the gate speed haha... 5:39 "FLG, Yeah, that sounds cool" hahah You have high ambitions i can tell
anyway... Very instructional compared to most vids on here for this type of use..
hey great vid man! i just ordered one of these and wanted to ask a few questions.
I am gonna want to be using this live with a band. So is it as simple as plugging in a cable from the microkorg straight into a pa system at the show? also how do you connect another keyboard to the microkorg so that you can still have all the microkorg sounds but be able to use the other keyboards keys? the keyboard i wanna hook it up to is an old casio keyboard withonly a small line out. thankyou!
there's a left and right audio line out which you can just plug straight into speakers or a mixer. as for hooking it up to another keyboard, it's not possible to use an external keyboard as a midi controller with only a lineout, although you could connect it to the audio input and use it as a vocoder, or do what this dude is doing here in this video
@tylaaarrrr Dang, man! Shoot. I talked to some1 who said they looked at everything and decided on xl, so, so did I. But I did see the huge $200 diff. K. Basically. What does the xl have that the microkorg doesn't??? Does the microkorg not come with the vocoder mic? Is the real appeal that the xl is'easier' to use? Otherwise Ima buy the microkorg like you recommend. Plus I sort of like the flashing lights. What do you think?
That's what I'm trying to find out before I buy one though! I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the xl. As long as no features are missing, and I can use it, and have fun, and add layers, and stuff - I'll be happy and not have buyer's remore.
okay so the deal with the XL is you have a better vocoder (i think 16 bands while the regular one has 8 which makes your voice sound clearer) , and has more sounds like classic piano (i dont know why the regular doesnt have that effect its kinda stupid) and many more.
as tylar said, XL is more difficult but tbh alot better in practice.
i love you for this contribution man.

how do you tweak it to play chords if the patch you're using only plays one key at a time?
joejumps4fun 2 years ago
@joejumps4fun Make the patch stereo/polyphonic. Ed Select 1 > Voice > Knob 3 > Poly.

hey great vid man! i just ordered one of these and wanted to ask a few questions.
I am gonna want to be using this live with a band. So is it as simple as plugging in a cable from the microkorg straight into a pa system at the show? also how do you connect another keyboard to the microkorg so that you can still have all the microkorg sounds but be able to use the other keyboards keys? the keyboard i wanna hook it up to is an old casio keyboard withonly a small line out. thankyou!
evanlovestdwp 2 years ago
for the show i recommend using a DI box or 2 for stereo... if you'll use pan effects...
alexjseguin 2 years ago
there's a left and right audio line out which you can just plug straight into speakers or a mixer. as for hooking it up to another keyboard, it's not possible to use an external keyboard as a midi controller with only a lineout, although you could connect it to the audio input and use it as a vocoder, or do what this dude is doing here in this video

So if I want multiple capabilities is microkorg or microkorg xl better, anyone?
YvesIsaki 2 years ago
@YvesIsaki apparently...The regular microKorg is a better beginner model AND cheaper AND easier to use (believe it or not)
I've used both and the plain MicroKORG is a lot more fun to play with. I've also bought my own. I definitely recommend the MicroKorg, NOT THE XL. :]

YvesIsaki 2 years ago
@YvesIsaki Basically, the XL has a better microphone (16 band instead of 8 band, but the MicroKorg has a 1/4" input jack for a dynamic mic)
I found the MicroKorg easier to patch as well to make your own sounds. As the parameters are right there in front of you.
And the price was a big pull for me as well.

I guess the whole deal with the xl is that it's pretty much the same, just higher quality with the sound of it and stuff.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Have a good night!!!

Well, whatever you purchase, I hope you think you made a good decision and have fun with it above all else!
tylaaarrrr 2 years ago
That's what I'm trying to find out before I buy one though! I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the xl. As long as no features are missing, and I can use it, and have fun, and add layers, and stuff - I'll be happy and not have buyer's remore.
Thanks a lot.

@YvesIsaki
okay so the deal with the XL is you have a better vocoder (i think 16 bands while the regular one has 8 which makes your voice sound clearer) , and has more sounds like classic piano (i dont know why the regular doesnt have that effect its kinda stupid) and many more.
as tylar said, XL is more difficult but tbh alot better in practice.
