Ur bird is adorable and I appricate the helpful info about how to teach ur cockatiel to talk, Me and my Fiance' just got ourselves a baby 12 week old cockatiel and we picked him out because he was very voical and friendly, we are hoping to teach him some phases. :)
awww poor sunny is just trying to have a conversation with the budgies, and they keep ignoring him!!! No wonder, he is scaring them by saying "dead budgie" hehehehehe
This is one of the funniest videos I have ever seen. All of your birds look so happy and content :)
Hi, I love watching sonny! , I got my first tiel who is handraised about 2 months now. He's still bald on the head. Really cute and loves attention. I've been trying to train him to talk. He makes alot of noise, I keep saying the same thing to him over and over again "hi, what are you doing? where's pat?" and he still cant seem to get it right. Any tips? is he on the right tract? Am i pushing him too hard?
@DEENA8519 He's an "infant", not just a baby! :D So he will not be talking for quite a long while. Some talking species of parrot cannot speak til nearly a year old. This can include cockatiels but usually it doesn't apply. Many speak long before. I wouldnt' look for talking until he is six months old. BUT, still do exactly what you are doing! Okay? Your doing great! Click "more" under the movie and tips on teaching them to talk are there.

I grew up with various budgies in our house... Hari, our most recent budgie, passed on late in 1991. But after viewing many cockatiel clips on YouTube, I believe it's time to, errr, upgrade to a 'Tiel! Sunny has spoken to me and all the pretty ferrets have indeed sung! Thanks!
@TheOrganiston9th you know what I say about tiels? Given the right attention if you get them as tots, they can be the "perfect" bird everyone seeks. Sunny rides our shoulder EVERYWHERE in public. People love him. Look at the other movies of him snuggling up to hubbys face. He does it all! Get a baby. Handraised by a PRIVATE breeder (no stores. It's cheaper and way better too). Those first weeks, hold him, hold him, hold him. Get a boy so he'll talk well. Keep in touch if you like!
it seems hopeless my bird wont talk she also kind of goes to the back of the cage when i try to pet her, do you have any idea how i can get her to get more use to me?
I'm not experienced with unsocialized birds like that really. All I can tell you is what everyone tells me. When you get your bird out, take it into a room away from the cage. This will be a neutral room. The bird will love you. lolol. This is where you have "training or taming" sessions ya know? As much as you can. And he'll start bonding to you. But try to get him to come out of his cage on his own if he won't step up on your hand to come out okay?
If your cockatiel is female, this would be why she's not talking; it's generally the males that mimic speech. But both genders have their advantages... the females tend to be the most affectionate of the two. Check out some cockatiel books from the library-->this will give you useful taming methods and ideas. Good luck!
That is amazing! We have a pearl male named "Zah-Zu" he imitates and sometimes I think I can understand what he is saying but it's not as pronounced as Sunny!
I could shoot myself, but I don't remember. :/ If I really searched it out ... when we got him, the first movie of him talking ... I could figure it out. We got him at about 17 weeks or younger. I wanna say a few months?? Sometimes babies won't talk til nearly a year old they say. I know it wasn't less than 2-3 months. And no more than 6.
can some 1 help me when i get my cockatiel out of his cage he starts flying every where and hits him self in the walls is that normal and can u tell me how i can stop him from flying away or i need to trim his wings
our cockatiel r.i.p katie bird she used to say 'katie bird perty' and 'watcha doin' and she would whistle at u and she sung a tune i cant remember how it went and she said once and only once ' pack a bowl' she was my aunts bird before she was ours we didnt teach her that lol and she said it at the worst possible time lol we miss her
that was great! hes so talented. I have a cockateil of my own he likes to whistle tunes and can sorta say pretty bird .. thats about it.. Sunny was amazing.. the "dead budgy" part was histerical!!
Wow, That's the most verbal cockatiel I've ever heard! I have a lutino, and a Pearl pied. They say Hi, hello, I love you, come on, they laugh, and they whistle a 3 or 4 tunes.
It is really funny. Once in a while you find one that is extra smart or one you've really had the time to put into like Sunny, that "can" put meaning to the words. Sunny does things on command. And he figured out my hubbys name and how to use it appropriately. Its creepy.
Still, I think Sunny could get depressed. Anyways, I wished my cockatiels spoke just like Sunny can. My oldest (a 10 year old normal grey named Lily) only says my name and in whistle form. Another thing he says is when I give him scritches, but really all we say is gibberish, so he kinda repeats it. LOL
My youngest, a 6 month old, makes the sound of a coqui (a little amphibian here in PR whose cry is precisely like that: coqui).
OH i'm so stupid. You mean its sad that the budgies dont talk back to Sunny. Not that birds in general dont answer humans in a "real" way. Gosh I'm stupid. Yah, you are right. It IS depressing in a way that he is trying so hard and they ignore him. Luckily he practically lives on our shoulder and even naps with us. He seems to really enjoy other birds. But it is weird and sad they don't pay him any mind. At least they budgies accept a parrolet, and the cockatoo chases others to play.
OMG! I LOVE HIM! woooooooooo splat, dead budgie! Cracks me up!! so cute and funny. What an entertainer! Congrats to his "parents" that taught him to talk, most tiels dont actually speak words. :))
Awe thank you SO much! Wow. I think we got a bit lucky too and that he might be exceptional ya know? I have two budgies none of which speak. I Goffin who only says two words. And I did the same technique on them, just not as intense. Of course my moms Amazon was awesome, but they are well known talkers, so i dont' count that.
I wish I knew if I could do this again with another tiel ya know? Just curious.
I trained mine by recording me saying the phrase I wanted him to learn onto my computer. I set my audio player to repeat and played it when I went to work.
Up ... and down. I'm happy to say however, that it's mostly up. She is able to have that colar off with no problems several hours a day. Every time we wean her, she starts up after a few weeks. So this time, We're just going to take months, not weeks to slowly wean her off. It's gotta be possible, cause she doens't pick at all when its off for short portions of the day. :D
a) if you notice it's a .mov file, ALL my older movies have a sound lag like that if you look.
b) uuuuh yeah, no human sounds like that
c) people who own cockatiels very well know this is not fake because they know what their voices sound like, there are two different sounding kinds of voices (whistling and this gravely kind) and his is normal.
I'll take it as an awesome compliment though, Sunny is pretty extraordinary.
Wow, that was great! I've never seen a cockatiel that says that many things. Ours says a few things, but mostly imitates sounds. Very cute cockatiel. I love Sunny!
Sunny is so cute!! Love what he says and all the sounds he makes...its so awesome! My pied cockatiel is four months old and he's already learning how to talk a little. How old is Sunny now?
Yer kidding me! WOW. How unusual. Jump on that. I figured out that Sunny learned the best when I pushed hard when he tried, not when he was in between learning. Sunny started before a year old too. Check out all of the tips on the right hand description and go for it okay?
Well, he's not exactly talking yet but he sure does make a lot of noise. He tries to say pretty bird and charge. He already does wolf whistles and monkey noises.
Because I'm a ferret person. And when they have a bad day and miss the boxes, I sing that song so I keep in high spirits with them and dno't ... kill them. LMAO. They stand around me with innocent faces all watching me clean up the poopies.
"*bomb whistling* Dead Budgie!" XD I wish my birds could do that. Our male cockatiel Buddy has only got down a kissing noise and a wolf whistle. Our female Charlie use to wolf whistle but now that Buddy's in the house she mainly keeps quiet (he invaded her territory XD).
You know what would be funny? A sexist bird. "Get me some seed, bitch!" lmao.
For real, you know what someone could do? Teach a bird to be a redneck. "Tell yew whut, got me some moooooooooooon pies here". They pick up Brittish accents, etc, so why not??
You know I don't know. I know many won't talk until 1, because they age like us (They are infants at that age). I've heard from some they can talk at any time, but I've also heard that if they've never spoken it is likely they never will. They probably are both right to an extent ya know?
Thank you for posting these Sunny videos...I lost my precious little Tyler, a female whiteface cinnamon pearl, 4 days ago. She passed away very unexpectedly at only 5 years old. Sunny has helped me through this by making me laugh, and helping me to remember Tyler. I will eventually get another cockatiel...I would LOVE to have a male like Sunny hehe!!! Sunny is the most beautiful and intelligent male cockatiel I've ever seen. Give him a kiss and a scratch on the head for me!!!
Oh my goodness! I cannot imagine how gorgeous Tyler was. Man oh man. Only five .. gosh I'm so sorry your time was so short with her. Please, let someone else into your heart again someday. You deserve it. Yes, get a male indeed! I held Sunny for hours a day starting at 17 weeks of age, so he reaaaaaaally bonded to us. Tiels are the perfect birds, I swear. Give a new one time, and do what i say on the right for talking and you'll be good to go.
Naa.. You will not believe it! I was about to write... actually I wrote it and canceled it... but ok Iìm gonna tell you what I wrote and then canceled; My dear, would I be that lucky (like you) to find such a "sucker for animals" hubby?? ahahah
DO NOT DO NOT settle for less. If the boyfriend is not into animals, let alone learn to love and spoil them, don't spend your life with them. I run into far too many people who have spouses that just tolerate it or worse. No way do they have the good time like we do, let alone bond in that special way like others do who both are nuts over their furred, feathered or scaled family members.
Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!! I can't believe it!! Everyday is a sorprise with you guys!! Again I'll say I looooooooooow ya!!! HOw many birds you have then??? YOu make me happy! I'm happy!! =)
Too many for my likeing actually. Hubby is a sucker for animals, so we have five of them. Two budgies who are not bonded to a soul but each other. A baby parrotlet who loves the Neo green budgie. Tika the Goofy Goffin and Sunny.
I could kill hubby.
I keep threatening his parents that I"m going to drop off those bad budgies at her house. I'd actually do it if I knew she'd spoil them as much as we do.
Scroll down the comments and you'll see. I'll put the steps in movie description. A bird needs to be around a year old before it starts talking sometimes. It takes more than weeks. Sunny is unusual and it takes him between 1-4 months to pick up something depending. Once ina while, he won't pick it up at all, so I move onto something else. Try to teach your bird two diff things, so he has a choice.
It's been a very long time since this video first went up. I'm happy to say that although the budgies are still buddies, they keep company with Sunny now (but still don't interact). Sunny has found a friend in Tika the cockatoo. He is trying to make friends with a parrotlett, but the 'let and the budgies prefer each other. Sunny prefers us primarily. He looks at other birds like "pets" from our shoulder. Lol. He goes everywhere with us each day except food stores and is quite the traveler.
Another update, we are trying to teach Sunny more words. He picks up sounds and songs. But not words. We are working hard on teaching him "I'm busy!" (said in a snotty way lmao). Although we've not succeeded in other phrases over the past months, I feel confident about this one because he listens intently to this one. I'll be curious to know what his vocab limit will be!
We compromised. A "mate" (tiel) changes them so that they can remain tame, but in no way would he remain as bonded and social to us. But, he does have a "flock" he plays with each day, but does not live with. He loves his budgies and his parrotlet. He mostly loves our cockatoo, but he can't get close to her. He has both humans and birds.
What about a second male cockatiel? We got a friend for ours, and they are SO happy as cagemates and foraging partners. They're still friendly with our other birds, and they both are very bonded and affectionate with us.
I guess I'm gun shy because we got our budgie another male. They went completely wild. Sure they are tame and spend time with us, but they'd rather be away from us and together. They won't talk now. It's just very "different". And although it appears more natural (which is nice), I don't see them as necessarily "happier"? Just more natural. Sunny is so unique, I don't want to mess with that. too much risk for me.
I understand about both the delicacy of adding new birds and the responsibility of having a unique one (we have a canary who whistles about a dozen words and phrases). I'm glad Sunny is happy. You're doing an amazing job with him. There are lots of talking tiels on the Web, but I've never heard another who uses words "in context" the way Sunny does. That's his real uniqueness.
If you youtube search Mr Riley, you'll find an outstanding video of an ekkie having "conversation" with his owner. It's enchatinging. She told me to teach sunny "lanquage"... pair words with actions/situations. So I did! The most incredible thing he's done, was to substitute my hubbies name in phrases. "Woo woo Scott" (instead of Sunny). Obviously no one has ever said that here. Yet he knew to pair up a phrase to his owners name somehow. He does that a lot.
By the way, I didn't mean to imply that somehing more "natural" isn't better when it is. I was just saying there are diff types of happiness, and as far as we can see he is as happy as the two budgies, but in a diff way.
He picked up a couple things on his own (that we didn't even want him to). Most we repeated over and over to him and taught him. Recordings are used to this day to help him get clearer and to back up and boost what I do in the day.
i ave a budgie is 7 years old was a gift from an old lady. . he is 10 now and i love him loads ... he comes close and kisses me . says stupid and cheeky boy. . would just adore a cockateel like yours.
randomgirl im soo sorry....thats very sad to loose any pet that u ahve loved nad gave it a home to all these years...we will all c him again one day tho...god bless
Tons of saying the same thing (only 1-2 things at a time) over and over associated with something I was doing. Like "Hi" and stick my face in him. And then when I'd leave the house, run a recording of me doing the same thing.
My female tiel is like a puppy. I spoil her. I open her cage whenever I'm home. She's usually good and stays on it, but when it's dinner time she hops off, runs to the table, pecks my feet, and SCREAMS while doing it!
She's a shoulder queen--wants to be on anyone's shoulder. She does this bit where she'll nestle her beak right inside the ear and hold it there for minutes at a time. I call it "telling secrets."
Oh, she mimics my microwave when it finishes also. That's about it.
My female tiel only says her name, "Pita!", and she makes many other specific noises that I know what they mean.
My aunt had a beautiful male lutino pearl that was an awesome talker and mimmicked everything from the phone to the microwave. But nobody could do anything with him--he was meaner than shit. Yours is so good-mannered.
When I was growing up, I ran into that all of the time. The good talkers werent' nice and the cuddly ones didn't talk. Now all the sudden that's not true in this house at all. Weird. Is your female nice? I wonder why some birds will learn 1-2 words and thats it. I mean you'd think it'd be an all or nothing thing. The Cocktoo I own only says "What" and "Tika". lol.
That was hilarious! My tiel doesn't talk but she has a lot of specific sounds she makes, especially when she barks at our shoelaces. The "bad kitty" was HILARIOUS!
That is so precious, it shows the cockatiel's intelligence - he sure makes the budgies look dumb. Many people claim that cockatiels only whistle but not talk, but this video proves otherwise. I have watched this more than a few times and really get a kick out of it. Thanks.
"All the pretty ferrets sing, la la la!" I absolutely loooooove it!!!

Sunny is the coolest bird alive! That's definately not faked. I want to get a bird so bad after watching sunny. How's tika doing?
qweqqweqbt 3 years ago
Up ... :D
wolfysluv 3 years ago
ur so dumb its fake when it talks notice how the beak doesnt move
mzlebsta 3 years ago
a) if you notice it's a .mov file, ALL my older movies have a sound lag like that if you look.
b) uuuuh yeah, no human sounds like that
c) people who own cockatiels very well know this is not fake because they know what their voices sound like, there are two different sounding kinds of voices (whistling and this gravely kind) and his is normal.
I'll take it as an awesome compliment though, Sunny is pretty extraordinary.
If you are being a troll though ... shew!
LOL
(Gotta love u-tube)

my cockatiel talks as well but not as good and its not fake

Sunny is so cute!! Love what he says and all the sounds he makes...its so awesome! My pied cockatiel is four months old and he's already learning how to talk a little. How old is Sunny now?
erin920 3 years ago
Yer kidding me! WOW. How unusual. Jump on that. I figured out that Sunny learned the best when I pushed hard when he tried, not when he was in between learning. Sunny started before a year old too. Check out all of the tips on the right hand description and go for it okay?
Sunny is about 3 now.
wolfysluv 3 years ago
Well, he's not exactly talking yet but he sure does make a lot of noise. He tries to say pretty bird and charge. He already does wolf whistles and monkey noises.

Why ferrets? you sure he's not saying parrots sounds like it to me. he's awesome
BloodRedRose 3 years ago
Because I'm a ferret person. And when they have a bad day and miss the boxes, I sing that song so I keep in high spirits with them and dno't ... kill them. LMAO. They stand around me with innocent faces all watching me clean up the poopies.
wolfysluv 3 years ago

RasberryRed321 3 years ago
does it matter how old they are before they talk, is it possible for them to be too old to talk?
rhcp1126 3 years ago
You know I don't know. I know many won't talk until 1, because they age like us (They are infants at that age). I've heard from some they can talk at any time, but I've also heard that if they've never spoken it is likely they never will. They probably are both right to an extent ya know?
wolfysluv 3 years ago
i got 2 cockatiels and 2 budgies. they all talk the same way we do
resplendence2 3 years ago
Thank you for posting these Sunny videos...I lost my precious little Tyler, a female whiteface cinnamon pearl, 4 days ago. She passed away very unexpectedly at only 5 years old. Sunny has helped me through this by making me laugh, and helping me to remember Tyler. I will eventually get another cockatiel...I would LOVE to have a male like Sunny hehe!!! Sunny is the most beautiful and intelligent male cockatiel I've ever seen. Give him a kiss and a scratch on the head for me!!!
dannysgirl71605 3 years ago
Oh my goodness! I cannot imagine how gorgeous Tyler was. Man oh man. Only five .. gosh I'm so sorry your time was so short with her. Please, let someone else into your heart again someday. You deserve it. Yes, get a male indeed! I held Sunny for hours a day starting at 17 weeks of age, so he reaaaaaaally bonded to us. Tiels are the perfect birds, I swear. Give a new one time, and do what i say on the right for talking and you'll be good to go.
I have a new Sunny movie up. :)
wolfysluv 3 years ago
Naa.. You will not believe it! I was about to write... actually I wrote it and canceled it... but ok Iìm gonna tell you what I wrote and then canceled; My dear, would I be that lucky (like you) to find such a "sucker for animals" hubby?? ahahah
IlaRossetti 3 years ago
DO NOT DO NOT settle for less. If the boyfriend is not into animals, let alone learn to love and spoil them, don't spend your life with them. I run into far too many people who have spouses that just tolerate it or worse. No way do they have the good time like we do, let alone bond in that special way like others do who both are nuts over their furred, feathered or scaled family members.
wolfysluv 3 years ago
Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!! I can't believe it!! Everyday is a sorprise with you guys!! Again I'll say I looooooooooow ya!!! HOw many birds you have then??? YOu make me happy! I'm happy!! =)
IlaRossetti 3 years ago
Too many for my likeing actually. Hubby is a sucker for animals, so we have five of them. Two budgies who are not bonded to a soul but each other. A baby parrotlet who loves the Neo green budgie. Tika the Goofy Goffin and Sunny.
I could kill hubby.
I keep threatening his parents that I"m going to drop off those bad budgies at her house. I'd actually do it if I knew she'd spoil them as much as we do.
wolfysluv 3 years ago
I love it when I see someone that obviously cares for their birds and treats them well. Kudos! And Sunny sounds so smart!

lacybug300 3 years ago
how do u make it talk? ive been tring for weeks
METALALALICA 3 years ago
Scroll down the comments and you'll see. I'll put the steps in movie description. A bird needs to be around a year old before it starts talking sometimes. It takes more than weeks. Sunny is unusual and it takes him between 1-4 months to pick up something depending. Once ina while, he won't pick it up at all, so I move onto something else. Try to teach your bird two diff things, so he has a choice.
wolfysluv 3 years ago
o okay thank you

He's a legend! I wonder if he would get along with my tiel :P
angelbecki27 3 years ago
It's been a very long time since this video first went up. I'm happy to say that although the budgies are still buddies, they keep company with Sunny now (but still don't interact). Sunny has found a friend in Tika the cockatoo. He is trying to make friends with a parrotlett, but the 'let and the budgies prefer each other. Sunny prefers us primarily. He looks at other birds like "pets" from our shoulder. Lol. He goes everywhere with us each day except food stores and is quite the traveler.
wolfysluv 3 years ago
Another update, we are trying to teach Sunny more words. He picks up sounds and songs. But not words. We are working hard on teaching him "I'm busy!" (said in a snotty way lmao). Although we've not succeeded in other phrases over the past months, I feel confident about this one because he listens intently to this one. I'll be curious to know what his vocab limit will be!

Does this cockatiel also have a cockatiel-friend?
Sittichfreundin 3 years ago
We compromised. A "mate" (tiel) changes them so that they can remain tame, but in no way would he remain as bonded and social to us. But, he does have a "flock" he plays with each day, but does not live with. He loves his budgies and his parrotlet. He mostly loves our cockatoo, but he can't get close to her. He has both humans and birds.
wolfysluv 3 years ago
What about a second male cockatiel? We got a friend for ours, and they are SO happy as cagemates and foraging partners. They're still friendly with our other birds, and they both are very bonded and affectionate with us.
conuropsis 3 years ago
I guess I'm gun shy because we got our budgie another male. They went completely wild. Sure they are tame and spend time with us, but they'd rather be away from us and together. They won't talk now. It's just very "different". And although it appears more natural (which is nice), I don't see them as necessarily "happier"? Just more natural. Sunny is so unique, I don't want to mess with that. too much risk for me.
wolfysluv 3 years ago
I understand about both the delicacy of adding new birds and the responsibility of having a unique one (we have a canary who whistles about a dozen words and phrases). I'm glad Sunny is happy. You're doing an amazing job with him. There are lots of talking tiels on the Web, but I've never heard another who uses words "in context" the way Sunny does. That's his real uniqueness.
conuropsis 3 years ago
If you youtube search Mr Riley, you'll find an outstanding video of an ekkie having "conversation" with his owner. It's enchatinging. She told me to teach sunny "lanquage"... pair words with actions/situations. So I did! The most incredible thing he's done, was to substitute my hubbies name in phrases. "Woo woo Scott" (instead of Sunny). Obviously no one has ever said that here. Yet he knew to pair up a phrase to his owners name somehow. He does that a lot.
wolfysluv 3 years ago
By the way, I didn't mean to imply that somehing more "natural" isn't better when it is. I was just saying there are diff types of happiness, and as far as we can see he is as happy as the two budgies, but in a diff way.
wolfysluv 3 years ago
Wow that cockatiel is amazing, how long did it take to learn all of that and do you use recorded sayings or that is just everyday talk the bird hears
Yokillacold 3 years ago
He picked up a couple things on his own (that we didn't even want him to). Most we repeated over and over to him and taught him. Recordings are used to this day to help him get clearer and to back up and boost what I do in the day.

piecemaker3180 3 years ago
Tons of saying the same thing (only 1-2 things at a time) over and over associated with something I was doing. Like "Hi" and stick my face in him. And then when I'd leave the house, run a recording of me doing the same thing.

hi we have a yellow bird that is called sunny and it can says all the stuff your bird can say how weird lol
cubeworldcrazy 3 years ago
My female tiel is like a puppy. I spoil her. I open her cage whenever I'm home. She's usually good and stays on it, but when it's dinner time she hops off, runs to the table, pecks my feet, and SCREAMS while doing it!
She's a shoulder queen--wants to be on anyone's shoulder. She does this bit where she'll nestle her beak right inside the ear and hold it there for minutes at a time. I call it "telling secrets."
Oh, she mimics my microwave when it finishes also. That's about it.
byteme10101 3 years ago
My female tiel only says her name, "Pita!", and she makes many other specific noises that I know what they mean.
My aunt had a beautiful male lutino pearl that was an awesome talker and mimmicked everything from the phone to the microwave. But nobody could do anything with him--he was meaner than shit. Yours is so good-mannered.
byteme10101 3 years ago
When I was growing up, I ran into that all of the time. The good talkers werent' nice and the cuddly ones didn't talk. Now all the sudden that's not true in this house at all. Weird. Is your female nice? I wonder why some birds will learn 1-2 words and thats it. I mean you'd think it'd be an all or nothing thing. The Cocktoo I own only says "What" and "Tika". lol.
wolfysluv 3 years ago
my cockatiel says pretty bird too.
theman211294 3 years ago
"(Bomb whistling) dead budgie!" Too funny!
PrayerWarrior4Him 3 years ago
That was hilarious! My tiel doesn't talk but she has a lot of specific sounds she makes, especially when she barks at our shoelaces. The "bad kitty" was HILARIOUS!
SuzSpaz 3 years ago
Sunny does have a "kitty". Its a tiny plastic one and it's his fav toy. I have a movie of it in my account.
wolfysluv 3 years ago
That is so precious, it shows the cockatiel's intelligence - he sure makes the budgies look dumb. Many people claim that cockatiels only whistle but not talk, but this video proves otherwise. I have watched this more than a few times and really get a kick out of it. Thanks.
