Look on Youtube for pictures taken wide open whit a Canon Ef 400mm F 2.8 L IS USM .It doesnt get any sharper than that .I had both the 85 and the 400.,Optical ,usefullness starts at F 2.8 whit the 85.wide open and even at 1.4 and also 1.8 its not sharp at oll.

85mm 1.2 L is the best lens I've used. It's just excellent and shames all other lenses. True it's very pricey and autofocus is not the fastest... but I'm always in awe with the image quality and the bokeh it renders.

In this case, I looked at the Nikon, to Sigma, and the Canon, and I gotta say... the Canon is mind-bogglingly more impressive than either Nikon or Sigma. The 1.8 canon even stands out compared to the 1.4G Nikon; I'm impressed! The 1.2... well use the autofocus and it's slow; the manual focus works like a dream. It has a weighted assisted ring that makes it insanely light to the touch; my first time shooting with it I was completely blown away by how easy it was to use manual focus!

@Markofnikoff Why? Just because it's a zeiss? Both the 85 1.2 and the 85 1.8 are significantly sharper than the zeiss and it does not have autofocus (which is a pain in the ass at apertures this wide). Besides, it's not even a real zeiss, they're built by cosina in japan and not in germany.

@Markofnikoff Actually sharpest is Nikkor 85mm/f1.4G, at least from MTF point of view. Zeiss on other hand has its Zeiss-ish rendering and color transfer, which makes it unique (bit like Leica), its not that sharp as Nikkor but one gets perfect bokeh. Although best bokeh is 135mm department, either Zeiss ZA 135mm/f1.8 or Sony 135mm/f2.8 STF. There is quite a lot of lenses with 85mm focal length, but none of them excell in everything, one must choice according his needs. Bokeh or sharpness.
