• @goblinking169 ......

the most misplaced comment i have ever seen

  • @goblinking169

at what ? getting nappy rash

  • Ah! The Enz back when they were wonderful. Saw them live a few times in those early days. Simply superb. They remain one of the best bands I ever saw.

    Shame they turned to shite.

  • honas 21 McCartney??? WTF where you listening to. This band where so far ahead of that poncing musical non entity.....ah why bother...Split Enz where just great

  • This has a bit of McCartney about it. Actually I've heard Macca rates Neil Finn as one of the most melodic contempory writers of the last 20 years

  • Whoops!

  • I love 80's music!! I love u jim!!! Thx 4 da vid!!

  • kinda pseudo-punk, anti-disco, pre-new wave. hard to describe their music, unless you call it "awesome!" "oooooo whoops, ooooo whoops!" LOLOL

  • I enjoy the early Enz before they got influenced by the british new wave. The early stuff I perceive as more personal as from the new wave stuff was more mainstream back then.

  • "I went out to see if i could live forgotten days. Well that was my mistake, was my mis.. , that was my mistake, was my mis... , that was my mistake ..."

  • They have a ghostly glow about them....

  • Hey

    What a groovy song!

I heard this on Spicks & Speck's 70's show tonight and now it's stuck in my head.

  • From what I recall Noel is the percussionist, got dragged into drums didn't enjoy it and went back to the percussion, including playing some awesome spoons and designing the clothes to this very day when ever they get together

  • Bought the album ages ago, found it back while cleaning. So fricking good!!!!!!!

  • first heard this from the paordy of the footy show and now i luv it

  • I think it was Tim Finn singing in the set up.

  • hahah with sam!... it was brilliant!!

  • the panda band did an amazing cover of this on jjj

  • I enjoy both Split Enz and Crowded House. But from what I've seen, the Enz have better videos.

My parents have connections to these guys kind of. They used to be friends with Eddie Rayner, and my dad told me Noel Crombie's his neighbour.

  • in nz there was no other band that was like split enz.. they were unique there and are probably nz's most loved band and a nz icon. neil finn of course went on to form crowded house and enjoyed more success internationally

  • As a resident of the times (and regular watcher of Countdown) I remember thinking that the bands who were Kiwi had more quirky/original videos than the Oz bands. I always thought it was because they had better weed across the water.

  • anyone know what year this was ?

  • 1977

  • 1977... was it that Glam Rock lasted longer in the Southern Hemisphere than it did in the North, or is this an art rock kind of look. In other words, were there other bands in NZ who looked like Split Enz? Or were they unique down there?

  • 1977

  • What intrument does that guy play that is wearing the yellow suite and black tie? Cause it dosnt look like he's doing much.

  • that may be so but i am sure he is doing his best in what might for him be a difficult situation!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tambourine, it looks like.

  • Tis the Spoons

  • He was their clothing designer, he only played spoons live and became part of the 'joke'.

  • I think the video is more bizarre than the song. Fortunately, they tamed their image to their muisc, eventually.

  • One of my favourite songs by them. This and "Poor Boy".

  • lovely song like this group

  • Was this song done pre neil finn? it is very avant garde, because under neils influence they became a little more pop orientated

  • This was done shortly after Neil joined the band but I don't think Neil had any songs on the Dizrhythmia record.

  • Neil's the one in red =)

I wonder if those glasses are just a prop or whether Neil really is short sighted and wears contacts or something. Does anyone know?

  • As far as I'm aware Neil has never worn glasses, and I have seen him perform live

  • Ultra cool!

  • saw them in Palmy many years ago,, then moved to Mallorca/Spain, Well THAT WAS MY MISTAKE.

  • great song

  • im going to see them today at sound relief melbourne. XD yay!! feel like running around like Girr from invader zim.

  • Nice to laugh at "love" every once in a while!!

  • Oh heck,what??

  • Fantastic song by a very talented yet under recognised bunch of guys. Simply brilliant.

  • Yes, a very well written and executed song.

  • That is such a funny song! It sounds really goobery, carnival-ish and silly sounding music with rock and roll combined together! pretty cool!

  • Exactly my mistake,20 years of marriage,to be shot to pieces for the last 8!!!My mistake, satan is a female!!

  • Reminds me of the Addams family.

  • That was most men's mistake,I plead GUILTY!~!

  • This song goes well with break ups lol

  • Do you ever watch these guys and ask yourself, "who taught them how to put on thier makeup?" lol

  • Yeah good point about the makeup ;) I love Split Enz. I don't think enough people "get" the early days of Split Enz but I love their early music and love the videos!

  • LOL well I don't think the Maybelline people were there that day. But I really think it was something in the day, well scary thought it was in my day, love the Band.

  • Sorry I meant to hit the other button, for everyone looking, novalee66,this was a thumbs up....lol!I love Split Enz, especially because they made my father freak out! AH those were the days!

  • sam newman did the funniest version of this song hilarious

  • sam newman is f*#Khead lol

  • sam newman is a legend

  • Sam Newman was hilarious in his version.

  • ye lmao

  • lol on the footy show it was one of the funniest things i've ever seen.

  • i agree

  • he did

  • deep down we do love you guys,ur our neighbours for fucks sake(even though we kick your arse in all sports..lol),this song is pretty sweet, perfect song to end a set with

  • Sam Newman did the funniest impression of this on the footy show

  • Wacky B^stards! So glad I gotz

to see them a couple of years back. Love em!

  • Is Neil the one with the glasses ??? Thank you.

  • I adore this Band, they remind me of a bunch of mental patients on a day trip!!

  • By a long way New Zealand's greatest band. And Neil Finn is by a long way it's greatest musician.

  • Working at a large record chain in 1980 Tulsa, of all places, we played their records- our choice! I still can't get over how staid little NZ could produce such outrageous, uninhibited (straight!) musician-artists. To have NZ spawn the likes of the Finn Bros. -not to slight all the other Enz members- was to put it on the map for sure, here in the States! ...And, I could watch Tim's face alone in this one & be entertained (while sneaking peeks at Neil)!

  • Excellant - many thanks!

  • oh so vintage!! a real kiwi icon

  • Great stuff. Thanks for posting... the NZ Sparks.

  • Woohoo I love this song!

  • Bravo! Aaaah, thank you JimEAPG for the post. Yes indeed Split Enz was definitely ahead of their time. I was always amazed that they never caught on that much in the states as they were phenomenal! So great to see a vid from the early days :). Thanks again!

  • saw them in brisbane in 80',they were fantstic

great muso's, invented new wave i reckon.

  • Split Enz were geniuses with the music but then they did some boring clips with them and this is one of them, I See Red is the other. All dressed up but just bloody standing there. Great songs deserve great video clips. Especially such idiosyncratic brilliance as Split Enz had.

  • Each to his own... I actually like those two videos because they're not too weird. But the songs themselves are great, and hey... the band hasn't done too badly after all these years. And thanks to Youtube, we can all enjoy. Yay!!!

  • Yeah it might seem like now but music clips have come a long way. I remember when this came out around 1972 it was the weirdest most interesting thing we had seen

  • Grazmataz37 youre an absoulte tool, are you really that blind, do you know what these guys have done for Australian and New Zealand arts.

  • they were young and having fun. life would be boring without a bit of weirdness.

  • true, but the guy with the trumpet is on acid right

  • These guys could quite possibly be the coolest band of ALL TIME. They should have been WAY MORE popular in the United States.

  • They were ahead of their time.

  • good song - very amusing

can anyone find a video for The Makers song Big Picture please?

  • Haha, this video is quite funny, i liked the bit when Eddie Rayner is about to turn the page of his music and he falls off (before the camera starts tilting to the side) and i love Malcoms facial expressions

  • geez look n back now they look young then aye! great song

  • Go you good Kiwis go! They might be getting on a little, but the Finn brothers are still putting out solid music too :D

  • ah, thought this song was familiar!.. love split enz/ crowded house/ Finn bros... but check out the version of this song by NZ band The Managers!!!

  • Now I know where the Zippers came from.

  • Even though I'm 20, this song reminds me of my childhood.

    Musical geniuses.

  • spooky.I forgot the name of the tall guy of SE who keeps on standing there playing the tambourine-he looked strange.

  • Noel Crombie and he is sitting...

  • Split Enz, never as big as they should have been. What pop music should be, innovative, clever, humourous. Bloody brilliant.

  • good old new zealand

  • why does this tune remind me of the cold war

  • intersting. why does it?

  • I find it funny in the early days that Tim Finn always reminded me of a young Granpa Munster. They broke up before was born but I beleave they are bigest favourites and this is why.

  • dood my dad has this vhs

  • i think that's one of my most favourite videos. thanks for puttin it up. tim finn is excellent. very funny to look at

  • They were years ahead of their time

  • this was my earliest memory of a music video in New Zealand! seems to have shaped me..

  • theyre from new zealand

  • austrila rocks!

  • Australia has a big rock.

  • god they were unique, thanks for putting on.

  • Molly creams over fucken everything, he's a useless wanker

  • they were starting to get popular and good ol molly was starting to cream his pants!

  • Wow... I've been curious for years about early Enz. Us 'mericans have a hard time finding this stuff. Having heard so much about the theatricality of their early years, it's great to finally see it. So different from the '80s Enz I know. Thanks so much for posting this!

P.S. Just saw Crowded House a couple of days ago!

  • I love this song! I swear, Split Enz made more videos than anyone!

  • musical geniuses.this stuff is legendary.very cool

  • The memories come flooding back. Glad I'm not still the angst-ridden teen who listened to this stuff.

  • Crazy and creative! Did the guys from Cirque de Solei get their intial ideas from watching early Enz videos?

  • Damn good suggestion.

  • This totally rules - Enz forever...

  • Normally you'd have to go the enz of the earth to see this video, or others like it. Now they are all here to see...Thanks from the yanks.

  • Look out for a young Neil Finn (now of Crowded House) in this video.

  • I love these early Split Enz

  • wow, unbelieveable. Awesome. Trippy. Years ahead of everyone else at the time.

  • no mistake asha. The enz are fantastic. esp their early stuff like this one. Was lucky enough to see them in concert in portsmouth during the 70's. Also have an early 12 inch single of theirs with a track called crosswords but i cant remember the other track. its in the loft somewhere so will have to dig it out. Carry on with being frenz of the enz!

  • i have crosswords, you can buy it off itunes if your looking for it, thats if your australian or new zealander, i love them so much, im too young to have seen them back then, i've only just got into them.

  • "I went out to see if I could fall in love again. That was mistake. That was my mistake."

  • Thanx so much mate! I still love the Enz! Saw them at the bowl of brooklands in N.P! One of my favorite bands of all time. Thanks once again!

  • OMG another pearl thanks so anyone can say that is available a video version of Matinee idyll ???? thank u so much !!!

  • Thanks for sharing! I've loved this lot since Mental Notes.

  • @ honoraryMarine.

enough fans here in Holland aswell.

    great stuff!!!

  • Damn! This was a favorite band when I was like 10. Genius pop music although the outfits are a bit scary. Sort of a dayglow 'Carnival Of Souls' groove.

  • OMG THIS SONGS BRILLIANT!!!

  • This you can't find in the US. That sucks!!!

We have some ENZ fans here...not many but a few though.

  • easy for us,just go to the bargan bin....

  • Oh My Goodness, Didn't They Made A Video For This Song, Awesome, One Of My Favs!!!, Thanks For Sharing :)

  • Great theatrical, almost vaudeville/music hall song. Lots of fun to sing and dance along to!

  • I never knew this footage existed and I've love Split Enz since 6 Months in a Leaky Boat!

  • ah split enz...so good. little 16 year old neil...

  • The video scared me when I was a kid in the 80s!

  • Let me correct myself. I just saw that Neil is in this video.

  • Wow I have that VHS release. Wish a good Region 1 DVD of the videos would come out. This one is my favorite 70's pre-Neil song
