I also entered a paper airplane contest and got the distance record if it hadn't of hit the far wall spun around and came back toward me. They should have counted it but oh well... This was years ago when I was in high school. I was pretty good at airplanes and it helped that I did tons of research :) I congratulate that kid for such a dang good distance flight. Well done! I don't doubt that it is an ordinary piece of 8.5x11 copy paper. What was clear. however, is that it "flew" like a rock. An aerodynamically designed rock, certainly, but a rock nonetheless. They should require that the airplanes in these types of contests can actually glide.
