@2112LSG The bottom head is tuned at a pretty normal "high" tension. We do this because, it seems to work more often than not. It is all player preference though.
@eRealist - We haven't manipulated the audio, it is the natural sound, however this is one of our early videos when we were still figuring out what the best mic'ing techniques would be, so it is the admittedly somewhat poor quality of the mic-placement / choice that you're hearing.
Beautiful tone! The tuning is fantastic, as there are no ringy overtones. Are you using any sort of damping? I can't see an O-ring or anything of the sort in the video. If not, then how do you recommend tuning to get a tone like this, with no ringing overtone at a specific pitch?
@onthe1drop There isn't any dampening on any of the snares when we do demos. The only real way to get the drum to be even pitched with no crazy overtones, is to make sure that all the tension rods are at equal tension. This goes for the bottom head as well.
I think higher tensions of the batter head work better with an higher tension of the reso, but it's only a suggestion, not a critic. brilliant snare, anyway
@maryted - modern black beauties (e.g. circa 2011) feature both Keystone badges and clipped B/O badges without serial numbers. The Keystone badge models are "A-stock" while the clipped B/O badge models are "B-stock". The B-stock drums typically have small blemishes in the black nickel plating, but are otherwise superb in every way. The only way to get a black beauty with a full badge (including serial #) is to pick up a used / vintage model. Hope that helps!
Just got one of these from you guys. The one with the tube lugs. You guys run a tight ship over there. Thanks for the great customer service and awesome products. SZ in Chicago.
I now have a Ludwig 14/5 super sensitve aluminium 1972 snare ..i can not say enuff about it, just a wonderfull user freindly snare, its just superb, so easy to tune.
@drumdoc Just played on one of these snares --- looking at heads. Evans Power Center maybe, or Remo Vintage Emperor would sound great on this drum. Im going with Evans.
@rlmofreg the word "supra-phonic" refers to the p-85 throw-off. every ludwig snare that has the p-85 throw off is a supraphonic. ludwig just makes them in diffrent kinds of metals like brass bronze or aluminium.
can someone tel me the actuall tuning for this drum to get that fat famous thud that its known for even at the high end..? do you do tune bottom head higher or wat?
What would be the real difference between this snare and the pork pie big black brass? Does it really sound that much different? Can't tell just from videos.
@x1337xCAZIE Not the same man! Don't try to justify your frugality! Should of spent just a little more. The drum is the shit!! the value will never go down!
@5drum5 Uhh... he can justify his frugality any way he wants to. Power to him for not overspending on a snare if he didn't want to overspend. The Black Magic IS the same as the Black Beauty save for the hardware and the seamed/seamless shell. The Black Magic uses a seamed WorldMax shell. It's no better or worse than the Black Beauty, it's just different.
@DrumCenterNH One question - you write "Black Beauty snare" in the name of the video, and, for instance, memhisdrumshop writes "Black Beauty Supraphonic snare" - so is there a difference or is this one a supraphonic too?
