She started off in Korea but was taught Japanese and taken to Japan because that's where all the money was at the time. Her reason for going to Japan and singing in Japanese was purely economic and extremely smart. If she stayed in Korea she might not be even half as famous as she is now.

Failed in Korea? I find that rumor kinda hard to believe. Everyone seems to like her wherever she goes. Heh.. Maybe she didn't fail in Korea, but the Korean entertainment industries (like SM Entertainment) see more opportunities to put their artists in foreign markets like Japan and China. DBSK of SM Entertainment was definitely a big hit in Korea, but they're now touring in Japan. Same with SM's Super Junior--they recently took some members from the original Korean group to debut them in China.

With Korea growing/advancing so fast, BoA passed by in several years. SM had BoA go to Japan where she would be more popular and get them more money. Business works that way.

She's still arguably the most popular artist in Korea.
