It's a piece of junk, I got mine yesterday, set it up. This morning it would not come up, Windows is asking me if I want to restore to a previous state. The problem is the keyboard is non-responsive, neither pushing the keyboard button nor trying to use the touch screen work, the touch screen is also non response. I called HP and their tech support does not even know what this product is, they told me that "because it is a new product we are still learning to use it" a call back was promised.

I am sorry for the harshness of my statement but never in my years of using a pc has this ever happened. You act as if HP is new to touchscreen devices & they are slapping shit together just to compete. @mdtrue Now if I had managed to choose to do a System Restore, I would have lost all the setup time I put into getting the thing ready. HP gives you a set of DVDs to repair Windows, etc. but take a stab a it, OK, I'll wait 2 minutes to see if you can figure it out ..... bingo! there is no DVD drive int he thing, which makes the DVDs useless, unless you go out and spend money in an external drive. Overall HP's tech support was not ready for this, it is not surprising though.

@acmeseed Are you trying to people to believe that HP is so clueless about a touchscreen pc, that they told you we are learning to use it? Any Pc tech or windows repair center can repair this device, software , system/hardware. There is nothing new to learn. If you are telling the truth... you had a harddrive failure & no matter what can be replaced/repaired or the unit could be exchanged.

To say "we are still learning...we will call you back" just sounds like a lie!

@mdtrue It turns out this had a happy ending, I got lucky and not by HP's help. I got a call back from a fellow that sounded very knowledgeable and smart in general, but whom also told me he did not have much documentation available to him, but had me try a bunch of key combinations, basically shooting in the dark. Finally we hit the right combination and I was able to chose to start in Normal Mode and Windows 7 self healed itself.

The HP Slate is probably the biggest competitor to the iPad... BUT the HP Slate 500 is just as heavy as the iPad and is smaller and that you only have one buying option i mean what If you don't need a 64GB hard drive. And they say it has two cameras ok but you don't need another camera! Like every phone these days comes with one and flash support well the iPad doesn't have it the HP Slate does but who needs more flash I can use my laptop for it!!! The whole reason I got rid of my Windows 7 PC was that it was rubbish, it alerted me about everything and that Macs are so much better. So why would I buy the Slate, won't it mean you'll have to have antivirus installed if it is win7 running natively? Frm a few videos I've seen, it looks less responsive than my iPad is as well. Main thing his that iOS is built around it's hardware, whereas this is not.

There are lots of much better "first look" if wanted to know anything about the HP Slate 500. This does not even have the "first look" info as that demands you get device at your hands to play with and not by ripping a Ads and marketing material.

HP Slate 500 will not sell much, as it still is running Windows 7, what is not yet workable with touch screens. It does have some functions to work with them, but the UI is WIMP by design and so on unpractical for touch use.

First off windows 7 was not designed to be used as a touch tablet. Apple IOS was designed to be an OS exlusively for touch, that in itself says something about the superiority of the ipad and the vision behind Apple. Something designed for a certain purpose all of a sudden changed to satify another purpose really tells you allot about not only the inferiority of that product but the talentless minds behind it. Really, all of these imitations are really just imitations with limitations.

the OS for the iPad was made for it, and only for this device (beside iPod and iPhone, which are unsing similar hardware) 'cause of this it will run much smoother and faster.

I think you will need a high end mobile cpu on the HP and more RAM to get a similar resolution...

Of course the iPad has some "holes to fill up" like the missing flash support, printing, no usb etc... but you have to decide if you need those features.
