I think I'll use your tips to teach Russian kids how to pronounce those sounds correctly. :) There's another thing - about the short 'u' sound: when pressing your stomach, you sound a bit like a teddy bear that has a button on its tummy. I think it might be a good explanation for kids, too.

There is no difference. In English, you can say 'the apple' and 'the ball'. The word 'the' does not change (unlike the word 'a', which does change: a ball, an apple.
