I think the appeal of the wolf it is not only the perfect hunter, but they work in a pack structure that cares for all members. The Alpha leads and the Omega keeps the peace by playing the clown. They mourn the passing of their pack mates and they will fight for each other to the death. That's noble for a species, and much better than humans.
