Actually it is not from "Rock Concert" (Globo), but from a program called "Concerto de rock" (Bandeirantes). The year is right, 1977. Wish more of "Concerto de rock" could be released here, it was a incredible program which used to feature live footage from UFO, Bad Company, Rare Earth, Uriah Heep and other rock acts.
Iam 56......started listening to FOCUS and buying their records around 1973....nobody like them......NOBODY........genius......madmen......musicians.....eternal beings.....( wish THIJS would watch my video on here....The Real Reason Why People Defend Religion)............I remain a soul forever inspired by their music
I can't believe I'm gonna see them live next tuesday!!! I saw a movie of them playing here in Brazil this week and it was unbelievable. They're legends
Whatever Van Leer was on when he performed in those days must have been some great shit. He was obviously high during many of thesed performances but it sure didn't take away from him
Yes. This is from a show which aired in the US. during the 1970's called Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. In fact, being the Focus fan that I'am, I saw this performance on TV. It was 1974 or 1975.
I'd guess '74 since Mother FOcus came out in '75 and they toured in support of this in 74. Do you know how long the song was in the broadcast? Live versions went around 20-25 min but I have only seen about 4:20 of a clip of this one.
I would love a full audio or video of this show, this is one of the most inspired live versions of this song I have ever heard, plus its full version would've been about 22 min!
Thiiis is really something!! I used to have a cassette of this that I taped from the TV. I saw them 4 times in LA. The first time at The Whiskey a-Go-Go and that place is like seeing them in you F'ing living room, Focus 3 had just been released, absolutely brilliant players...and man were they loud! Thanks so much for the post!
This song is named Hamburger Concerto, which is also the name of the album. This song was on side b of the record (vinyl). It was composed much like their song, Eruption, from the Moving Waves album in that it comprised an entire album side, and was written in several pieces.
@indivum I can't, nor would I add to, argue with or change a single word of your reply - and I was a Doors fan..................what an insightful post......
Check out the boots of the bass player, my girlfreind had a pair like those exactly the same not to long ago. Great performance by Thijs, like always.
This was from Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, which aired on Saturday nights here in the states. To think that we were priveledged to see such acts on television - for free!!! I actually have a crappy cassette recording of this same show, but one of my idiot friends knocked over a tray of empty beer bottles and glasses right near the 50 second mark of this vid. Does anyone know where this was recorded/ What club/venue?
Thank-You! Thank-You! Thank-You! I remember watching this when it first aired. I was just a teenager and fledgling guitarist. I LOVED THIS BAND! Jan Akkerman still kicks ass! And Thijs is amazing! I wonder of Don Kirshner saved any of these vids? My idiot friends at that time were either into Led Zeppelin or The Allman Brothers. Those were great bands, but my buds could not get past the 'yodeling'. Goddamn morons. FOCUS rocked!!! (Do you have the rest of this gig on tape???)
This is a television program homemade recording from Brazil, which was exhibited in 1977, called Rock Concert.
This program focuses the live at rainbow show.
Hamburgo Concerto is an little plus (extra) that came along, but incomplete. The recording on VHS is too old is much worse. I changed the audio on pro tools, because the original was not audible.
I edited this stretch and had to deal with the audio and video before going youtube, as were very bad.
@tucano66 Ah, ok entendi. Pena que não seja possível conseguir o restante. I´ve always been a fan of Focus and did not know this video (or at least this part of it) existed. Too bad the whole thing is not available. Thanks again anyway for posting this wonderful fraction of this band´s talent. Thijs is simply amazing.
@guitarguy382 'It is my opinion that if the liberties of this country(USA) are destroyed, it will be by the subtlety of the Roman catholic Jesuit priests, for they are the most crafty, dangerous enemies to civil and religous liberty. They have instigated most of the wars of Europe.' Marquis de LaFayette
@guitarguy382 'This war would never have been possible without the sinister influence of The Jesuits.' Abraham Lincoln on the Civil War 'I have learnt most of all from The Jesuit Order. A good part of that organization I have transported direct to my own party'~~~Adolph Hitler 'In Himmler, I see our Ignatius of Loyola'~~~Adolph Hitler
@guitarguy382 This passage is from page 287 chapter 34 entitled among women which is from The Man in the Iron Mask which was written by Alexandre Dumas pere in 1848. 'Coincidentally' in 1848 the Society of Jesus(Jesuits) were ousted from France for the second time. " Aramis took the good things in this life as steppingstones to rise to bad ones."
@guitarguy382 Thomas Jefferson: "I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."

This is the Don Kirshner Rock Show. The end credits had 'No Hang ups' and Birth was also played. UFO and New Birth were also on the show.
I have seen a studio copy of the film recently, so it does still exist. It was a great show, and Don was as lugubrius in a tan leather suit. He even manages to name drop his pal Jerry Weintraub in the introductions (New Birth)
This is the way I remember them. There was either a Midnight Special or a Don Kirschner's Rock Concert TV show from about this date where they played Hocus Pocus, and the Hamburger Concerto - this song, in just this way - I'd been hoping someday to see it again, and this is a dream come true. The TV show had much higher quality video, maybe a DVD of it can be found someday?
This is unbelievable. Compared to earlier performances of this excellent and underrated song, it seems that the group has perfected their playing. Also, their live sound has greatly improved: you are virtually drowning in sound, and every instrument seems "in your face." I would LOVE to get hold of the entire performance of this whole show--if not, just this song. Thank you so much for posting, and long live FOCUS.
